Dear Parents and carers,

How to use these plans

There are four daily phonics lessons plus a round-up lesson, five maths lessons, two writing tasks and three ‘topic’

tasks. Please upload a quick picture of work they do to Tapestry so we can feed back to you – this might be a thumbs

up or a comment, depending on the work. This way we can keep children’s learning on track if they aren’t in school.

Please don’t feel that you must print this pack. Most activities can be done without.

Tapestry

Thanks for all the work you’re uploading. Some parents prefer to put a ‘round up’ observation with comments or

photos at the end of a day, some are putting on lots of separate pieces. Do what is right for you. We will respond and

feed back to your observations from class as regularly as we can – bearing in mind we are all teaching. Please contact

me via tapestry if you have any concerns or questions.

No need to print things or use screens all day

Most of you told me your access to technology is ok. Hopefully you won’t need to print anything or for your child to

sit in front of a device all day. The links to e.g. white rose videos are all around 5 minutes long. If you need anything to

be printed please let me know on Tapestry.

Of course remember that your family’s wellbeing is really important. If your child isn’t in the right frame of mind or if

the activity isn’t suiting them, change tack and try something different or leave it until a better time.

This week’s topic

Our topic this half term is Living and Growing – animals. This week our topic is loosely ‘Wild / woodland animals’ so

we are using the story ‘One Snowy Night’ by Nick Butterworth.

Phonics

This week we are learning digraphs (two letters one sound) ch sh th ng and new tricky words she and we. We are

reading and writing whole words and short captions. I’ve added the jolly phonics picture actions below and the

stories are on my clips.

We will carry on with rhyme, alliteration (same sounds at the start of words) and distinguishing different sounds in

the environment too. You can help with this by playing lots of games like I spy, guessing games and talking like a robot

(It’s time for b-e-d) If your child is really finding phonics hard you will need to do lots of this at home.

Please refer to the ‘phonics’ section on the information tab on the website.

There are some excellent phonics games on Espresso, Phonicsplay and CBeebies.

Reading books – new info this week

Oxford Owls

We can’t send home reading books BUT there is some brilliant advice and video clips about reading on the Oxford

Owls website AND….they have a library of FREE phonics books you can read online, Our username is chinaclass2 and

the password is browick

www.oxfordowl.co.uk It’s a great website!

Libby App You can download the Libby app and read library books online for free You will just need a library card.

Jolly phonics orange readers – look in Google play Books / Apple Books. However – these are 99p each!

Maths

We will still be using the White Rose maths home learning activities for our class – this week is ‘Alive in 5 week 3’.

Other suggestions

There’s a list of general activities attached to last week’s home learning observation on tapestry and it’s also on the

website. Two things I know most of the children need practise with is fine motor skills so definitely do some cutting

and snipping practise and try some dough disco activities to strengthen their hands.

One Snowy Night

Day Task 1 Task 2 Task 3

1 Watch the story on Youtube – this one is written by the author and illustrator of the book, Nick Butterworth.

https://www.youtube.com/wat

ch?v=K-8AAisU1w0

Maybe you have your own copy at home?

Talk about how the animals were feeling on that snowy night. What sort of person do you think Percy is? Now imagine you are one of the animals and think what you would say if you knocked on the door. Can you write a speech bubble? It might be something like ‘Let me in.’

Or

‘I am cold.’

Use the sounds that you know and don’t worry if you can’t hear them all. If you haven’t printed this a grown-up could draw you a little speech bubble on the sheet or in your book.

Look at white rose maths home learning ‘Alive in Five’ week 3 day 1

https://whiterosemaths.com/home learning/early-years/alive-in-5-week-3/

comparing mass of different objects activity

Look at the Powerpoint ‘Woodland animal habitats?’ on Tapestry. If you can’t play the slide show a copy of it is in this pack below.

After you watch it, think about where the animals from Percy’s park would live. Explore your garden, or somewhere outdoors on a walk, or even in your house. Find somewhere for one of the animals to live. Ask your grown-up if you can use a phone or tablet and take a photo yourself of the place. Tell your grown-up why it’s a good place for an animal home. Using natural or other materials, can you make a home for one of the animals? Maybe add a drawing of that animal or a toy one if you have one. (Children in school could do this in a group)

Ask to use the phone or tablet again to take a photo of the animal home and ask your grown-up to and show me on Tapestry. If you are already brilliant at taking photos you could use photo editing (on an iphone / ipad use ‘markup’ and ypou could write the name of the animal on your photo.

2 After phonics there is a writing activity for today for ch and sh– see sheet below

Watch Week 3 day 2 Filling different containers

Look at the start studio wymondham youtube or facebook for last week’s live art class how to make a folded picture with a background, midground and foreground. You could make it of Percy’s park….

You will need pencils / pencil crayons / crayons / paint, thin card or paper and scissors. https://www.facebook.com/startstudioar tclasses/ or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjL0 qWjxGtc

3 Watch / read ‘One snowy night’

again.

Retell the story using Tales toolkit character / setting / problem / solution

(adults - see notes below) You tell your grown-up the story, they write down your EXACT words, then you can draw a picture at the end.

If you feel brave maybe your grown-ups could leave out one or two words in each sentence for you to write yourself. So if your

sentence is ‘Percy’s hut is in the park.’ they could write Percy’s … is in the park. You would write ‘hut’ in the space.

If you haven’t printed this your grown-up could draw the little pictures in your book or on paper for you

Look at week 3 day 3

Filling different containers

Prepare for tomorrow’s icy fun – You will need to collect:

-some tiny objects which you don’t mind being frozen. This could be berries, small leaves, beads, tiny plastic animals or even lego people or bricks…If you’re using berries found on a walk you will need to be careful so ask an adult to see if they are safe – hawthorn and rosehip should be ok to use

-an ice cube tray or small plastic containers – a plastic snack-type box Place your objects in the ice cube trays and top up with water from a small jug, bottle or cup. Put them overnight in the freezer. You probably want to freeze 5 or 6 cubes with things in.

There will be a whole-class story this afternoon at 2pm

4 After today’s phonics there is a writing sheet to complete.

NOTE – at the end of this pack I have added some sheets if you are looking for little extras… but ONLY do these if your child is keen or you have the extra time and energy !!

Watch week 3 day 4 Hunting for small objects to fill a box

Icy challenge: Can you help Percy decide how to warm up his friends the most quickly by finding out which one of your frozen objects will be freed first?

Think about what makes ice melt. Do you want to chip away at it? Use something warm? Something cold? Salt? Sugar? Collect the things you decide to use. Put each ice cube by itself on a plate or in a small bowl.

Find out which melts most quickly using the things you collected. What worked? What didn’t? Why? Which one of these things could Percy to warm up his animals the most quickly?

for today!

NOTE – at the end of this pack I have added some sheets if you are looking for little extras… but ONLY do these if your child is keen or you have the extra time and energy !!

Watch week 3 day 5 – measuring ingredients

making dough – leave out cream of tartar if you don’t have it (I never seem to have it when I need it!) If you don’t have the indredients for this can you cook something else and help a grown-up measure ingredients?

I’ll be attempting small group Zoom sessions this afternoon.

Phonics – I’ve linked to espresso here to introduce the sounds but if you prefer you can just use the jolly phonics stories and actions below this sheet. But please do complete the short activities for each sound on this page.

Night’

Tales Toolkit and storytelling

Here’s a quick bit of information about how it works. Children’s story telling skills are helped by using ‘Tales Toolkit’

storytelling.

We start with whole-class telling of stories – new stories and retelling familiar stories. We use props such as toys of

the character in the story. We teach the children to use the structure:

Character (people in a story)

Setting (Where the story happens)

Problem (What happens to the caharcters in the setting)

Solution (What happens at the end)

So Goldilocks could be told like this:

Once upon a time … three bears in the woods. Went for a walk.

Goldilocks came, ate the porridge. She fell asleep. The bears came back. Goldilocks ran away.

When they write their stories in books we give them each heading one at a time. Then we write the exact words

they say even if the grammar isn’t right. So Golilocks might be ‘Three Bears…The Woods…Goldilocks felled

asleep….Bears came back.’ After they have done a few stories, we get children to develop their words into full

sentences, maybe adding descriptions and story language and to use correct grammar ‘So you mean Goldilocks fell

asleep?’ . When they’ve finished we read the story back to them …and sometimes we act them out in class together.

I hope this helps! Please ask if you have any questions. For more information about how we develop storytelling skills
