Celebrant Alleluia, Christ is risen.

People The Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia.

Celebrant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Glory to God in the highest–Gloria in excelsis

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

The Collect of the Day

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Lesson Acts 2.1-21 Bible 1262

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine."

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

`In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women,

(4)

4 In those days I will pour out my Spirit;

and they shall prophesy.

And I will show portents in the heaven above

and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness

and the moon to blood,

before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day.

Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' " The Word of the Lord/Thanks be to God.

The Gradual Psalm 104.25-35, 37 Benedic, anima mea BCP 736

25 O LORD, how manifold are your / works! *

in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your / creatures. 26 Yonder is the great and wide sea

with its living things too many to / number, * creatures both small and / great. 27 There move the ships,

and there is that Le/viathan, *

which you have made for the / sport of it. 28 All of them look to / you *

to give them their food in due / season. 29 You give it to them; they / gather it; *

you open your hand, and they are filled with / good things. 30 You hide your face, and they are / terrified; *

you take away their breath,

and they die and return to their / dust. 31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are cre/ated; *

and so you renew the face of the / earth. 32 May the glory of the LORD endure for / ever; *

may the LORD rejoice in all his / works. 33 He looks at the earth and it / trembles; *

he touches the mountains and they / smoke. 34 I will sing to the LORD as long as I / live; *

I will praise my God while I have my / being. 35 May these words of mine / please him; *

I will rejoice in the / LORD. 37 Bless the LORD, O my / soul, *

The Epistle Romans 8.22-27 Bible 1300

We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our

weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

The Word of the Lord/Thanks be to God.

Children are invited to make their way to the back of the church to meet an adult for Children's Worship (in the gym) and will return at the Peace.

Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to his disciples, "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But, now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, `Where are you going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Our Worship

Our worship on Pentecost marks the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples in Jerusalem in the first days of the Lord’s Resurrection. The same Spirit is shared with disciples of Christ today. St. Paul wrote, “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” Today we also baptize two new members of that body and welcome new members into the fold. May the joy of life in the Spirit be yours this Pentecost.

At the 9:30 outdoor service this week, the St. John's Ringers will be back, accompanying St. John's Choral Scholar Katherine Kimbrough during the prelude in a rendition of Richard Proulx's "Interlude/Cadenza" for Soprano, Bells, and Percussion. This work uses experimental elements to create a sense of mystery, wonder, and excitement. For the anthem, the Ringers will play a lush arrangement of the well-known hymn tune "Land of Rest."

At the 10:30 service, the St. John's Choral Scholars will help to lead the congregational singing, and for the anthem they will sing Orlando Gibbons' "Come, Holy Ghost." The altar flowers are given to the glory of God and celebration of the baptisms of Graham Coker, by Cilla Thomas, and Miriam Stoudemire, by Victor & Nicole Stoudemire.

This Sunday, we celebrate the baptisms of Miriam Fiona Stoudemire, daughter of Victor & Nicole Stoudemire, and Graham Roberts Coker, son of Drew & Randi Coker. Those participating in Sunday's worship:

Fresh Start has resumed providing

all services!

Fresh Start is an outreach ministry of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. It is funded, in part, through a grant from the Matthew 25 diocesan grant. It provides laundry service, showers, food and clothing to Columbia's most vulnerable citizens. We have white laundry baskets located at the back of our worship spaces that we use to collect donations of food (canned fruit, vegetables, & meat with pop tops), clothing, diapers, grocery bags, toiletries, toilet paper, and laundry detergent.

New Men’s Bible Study

Fr. Scott is leading a new Bible study for younger men. They’re studying the epistle of James. Some scholars believe that this was the first New Testament book written. It was probably written by Jesus’ half-brother, James. This group meets on Fridays at 7:00 am, either in the Parlor, or on the Patio, depending on the weather. Renewing Lay Ministry at St. John’s

Post-pandemic, our ministry needs you! Below is a growing list of opportunities to serve God and the church through St. John's. We'll add a ministry a week for a while.

Acolytes: Be in touch with Brian McCants

(brianmccants@att.net) if your 6th-12th grader is moved to serve at the altar. We are losing some dedicated seniors and need to replenish our ranks!

Lectors/Eucharistic Ministers: Readers of Scripture,

intercessors, and assistants in Holy Communion. To learn more about serving in our worship in this way, contact either of your priests or Angela Daniel, coordinator of that ministry, at amdaniel@sc.rr.com.

Guild of the Flowering Cross: Members arrange

flowers for Sunday, offering the beauty of God's creation back to God as an act of worship. Contact Vera Tucker (vetuck5@aol.com) to join this group. A friendly florist is happy to train new members.

After a year of isolation and lockdown, and as we begin to embrace family and friends again, Partners in Agriculture invite you to enjoy an afternoon of music and fellowship amidst beautiful and safe surroundings. We want our Magical,

Musical Garden Gala to give voice to hope, healing and a

promising future, and to engage everyone in the continuing need for our invaluable work to end malnutrition in Haiti through education and outreach.

We'll have safely spaced chairs, or feel free to bring your own blanket and sit on the lush lawn. Dress in flat shoes, and festive garden attire. A prize for the best garden hat!

Congratulations to Sam

Fleischer, Parker Mustian,

and Christina Smith on

their confirmation at St.

David's Episcopal Church

on Wednesday, May 19.

These three young people engaged in learning about their faith, the history of the church, and what we believe as Christians over ten weeks last summer, and were able to publically make this mature commitment to Christ after a pandemic delay. We are also thankful for their confirmation sponsors, teachers Eileen and Gordon Schell, and all those involved in their formation as young people in the church! Keep those three and the four who will be confirmed in October in your prayers.

New or Visiting?

If you are new or visiting with us, please fill out a card so we can get to know you and help you get to know us! Our heart is to prepare you to

accept God's grace, grow in faith, and serve Christ in the world. We would love to connect you with staff, clergy and lay ministers.

Our Parish Family

We give thanks for the baptisms of Thomas Elliott, son of Chris & Jenny Elliott,

Miriam Stoudemire, daughter of Victor & Nicole Stoudemire, and Graham Coker, son of Drew & Randi Coker.

We welcome new members Sheryl Moureaux, Johnny Scott, and Gloria Prevost. We extend sympathy to Paul McCullough on the death of his father, Toni McCullough, on April
