Shrove Tuesday is a Christian festival which falls on the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent.

The date of Shrove Tuesday changes each year but is always 47 days before Easter Sunday.

Shrove Tuesday is sometimes named ‘Pancake Day’ because it was the last day to

eat rich, tasty foods before giving them up for Lent.

Lent is a period of 40 days (not including Sundays) where Christians reflect and prepare for the celebration of Easter.

9.30 – 10.15 Today’s writing challenge- Success criteria. Can you highlight the following in this example letter?

Adjectives Cohesion

Range of punctuation Dear Year 5,

I am so excited to tell you all about the Chinese New Year festival, it is amazing! I cannot believe how much fun it is!

Firstly, before the new year celebrations even begin, people should clean their house and garden and sweep away bad luck. Often, people will hang and make lanterns and decorations to make their houses look beautiful. I helped to make

some lanterns and I wrote ‘good luck’ and ‘wealth’ on them, which will hopefully

bring the household lots of lovely things this coming year.

On New Year’s Eve, whole families gather together, and I was lucky enough to

join in and see exactly what happens. I really enjoyed eating a steamed

dumpling, which I would love to try and cook once I arrive home. The best part of the day was staying up and waiting until midnight to watch the fireworks, they were amazing! All of the different colours lit up the sky, I couldn’t believe

it!

Finally, New Year’s Day arrived! Every new year, children receive red envelopes

from their parents and grandparents, which are filled with money and sweets. Everyone wears brand new clothes and I was given a red dress as red is a lucky colour in the Chinese culture. We also attended temple to give thanks for the new year and then we had a Chinese feast which was delicious!

I hope one day, all of you will be able to experience Chinese New Year. It is something everyone should have the opportunity to be a part of!

Yours sincerely, Mrs Taylor
