Harbour plan: Long curvilinear quayside, protected by a two-arm break-water with a quay running along its length. It contains numerous privately leased floating wharves.

Land surface area: 22.000 m2

Total wharf length: 450 m

Quay height: 1,20 m

Average Depth: 7,00 m

Protection: Always good for moored craft.

Capacity: Palermo Cala is located right in the historic centre and

offers the pleasure boater moorings near the most impor-tant monuments.

The dock holds up to 300 craft.

Harbour Plan: Small port made up of two docks: to the East, the new dock, protected on the E by the main breakwater and on the W by the lee pier, which divides it from the old dock. The new dock is used by pleasure boaters and is equipped with floating wharves. The old dock is used by fishing vessels. Statistics:

Water surface area: 47.000 m2

Total outer breakwater length: 400 m

Quay height: 1,50 m

Protection: Modest against north-westerly Mistral; negligible for moorings

against

winds from quadrants II and III.

Capacity: Around 80 berths.

Hazards: Shallow waters along the W shore. One-metre sandbank

located five metres W of the floating wharf. Maximum per-mitted draught of two meters.

Protection: Modest shelter from northerly Tramontana; southerly Sirocco

blows as a side wind.

Hazards: None.

north-easterly Grecale blows as a side wind.

Harbour plan: Port protected by two breakwaters, broadly facing NE. From inside the main breakwater two piers extend towards the SE. Numerous privately leased floating wharves are located on both outer breakwaters.

Quay height: 1,00 m

Protection: Pretty good against breakers from SW to NW in the outer

port; transverse wave-motion from NE and SE.

Capacity: Around 800 berths on floating wharves, of which around 80

are reserved for

short-stay pleasure boaters.

when the north-westerly Mistral blows.

Capacity: Around 680 berths (10% for short-stay pleasure boaters)

MILAZZO - MARINA DEL NETTUNO

Location: 38°12’, 86 N; 15°14’, 96 E

Comune di Milazzo

Harbour plan: A single dock for various uses. The pleasure-boat area has recently been equipped with a system of floating wharves protected by a floating reinforced-concrete breakwater.

Statistics: Water surface area: 214.000 m2_{(40.000 for pleasure boating)}

Quay height: 1,20 m

Protection: Good when the winds blow from quadrant IV, and limited

to the most sheltered area when it is blowing from quad-rant I.

Hazards: The port is exposed to winds from quadrants I and II. To

the SSW of Gamba di Donna point, there is a 6m sand-bank. About 500m NNW of the same point, there is anoth-er rocky bank with watanoth-ers as shallow as 8m. Extremely busy in the summer with hydrofoil sand ships bound for the Aeolian Islands.

GIARDINI NAXOS

Harbour plan: Pier pointing NNE, with a quay running along its length, and quayside on the shore, at the base of the same pier.

Quay height: 1,40 m

Protection: Good against breakers from quadrant IV; the ENE Greco

-Levante blows as a side wind.

Hazards: There is a semi-submerged wreck towards the middle of

the pier. Approach subject to significant sand accumula-tion. Mooring prohibited within 30m of the head of the pier, as this is reserved for the hydrofoil to the Aeolian islands.

LIPARI - MARINA CORTA

•

Location: 38°27’,95 N; 14°57’,50 E

Comune di Lipari

Harbour plan: Artificial Y-shaped structure emerging from a little island on which a small church stands. The island is connected to shore by a causeway suitable for vehicles. There are two docks: one to the N, mostly used by fishing boats, and one to the S for hydrofoil.

Statistics: Water surface area: 10.000 m2_{(500 for pleasure boating)}

Quay height: 1,50 m

Protection: Pretty good in the S dock, which only suffers difficult

condi-tions when the southerly Sirocco blows; scarce in the N dock, which is exposed to breakers from Quadrant I.

Hazards: The southerly Sirocco causes strong backwash and undertow.

LIPARI - PIGNATARO

Location: 38°28’, 55 N; 14°57’, 88 E

Comune di Lipari

Harbour plan: Small port made up of a single dock, protected by an outer breakwater with a quay running along its inside. There is also a quayside on the shore.

Quay height: 1,50 m

Protection: Good against north-easterly Greco, progressively less

effective as the incoming weather rotates clockwise until it is highly exposed to the southerly Auster and south-west-erly Libeccio.

Hazards: Strong winds from the SE cause backwash and undertow.

Night-time approach difficult due to the presence of numer-ous buoys which obstruct the W part of the port basin.

SALINA - DARSENA TURISTICA

Location: 38°33’, 18 N; 14°52’, 46 E

Comune di Santa Marina Salina

Harbour plan: Dock constructed within an outer seawall with a quay run-ning along its inside. There is a slipway, quayside and wharves. Good equipment.

Quay height: 1,50 m

Protection: Good in all conditions.

Capacity: Currently around 130 berths, 300 when work completed.

Hazards: None.

MARINA DI RIPOSTO

Location: 37°44’,10 N; 15°12’,60 E

Comune di Riposto

Harbour plan: Marina within the port of Riposto, protected by a long outer breakwater, located between a commercial zone and a fishing zone. There are two pleasure-boating docks: one is currently in operation, the other is in the final

stages of construction.

Land surface area: 134.000 m2_{(63.500 for pleasure boating)}

Total quay length: 4.060 m (1.820 for pleasure boating)

Total outer breakwater length: 1.250 m

Total wharf length: 1.680 m (1.400 for pleasure boating)

Quay height: 1,50 m

Protection: Provides shelter against the easterly Levante, southerly

Sirocco and Mezzogiorno winds. The north-easterly Grecale and northerly

Tramontana blow as side winds.

Capacity: Around 450 berths currently available

Around 650 further berths are under construction

Hazards: Port subject to backwash and undertow; it is dangerous to

enter and moor when strong winds are blowing from ENE to ESE.

Harbour plan: Northern peer with quay, at the base of which there is a small dock, and a southern peer. A few metres from the lat-ter’s head there is an arm which extends perpendicularly. In the southern part of the port basin there are a number of floating wharves.

Quay height: 1,50 m

Protection: Modest shelter against breakers coming in from the N or

W. Exposed to southerly Sirocco and ENE Greco-Levante side winds.

Hazards: None.

Harbour plan: Dock exclusively used for pleasure boating, with a quay running along most of its length, and numerous private wharves on its the east side.

Quay height: 1,50 m

Protection: Capable of providing shelter from any wind. Slightly

exposed to the southerly Sirocco.

Capacity: Conveniently located for the city centre, this small port can

hold up to 300 craft. The services and assistance available are first class.

Hazards: Difficult to access in the winter months due to rocky

Harbour plan: Natural inlet sheltered to the east by a breakwater with a quay running along its length, and to the west by a small elbow-shaped pier. The port provides floating wharves and a slipway.

Protection: Easterly Levante blows as a side wind.

Capacity: Conveniently located for the city centre, this small port can

hold up to 500 craft. The services and assistance available are of a good level.

SIRACUSA - PORTO GRANDE - MARINA YACHTING

Harbour plan: The main port structures are: two quaysides separated by a wharf, Piazzale Zanagora, which faces WSW along the shoreline of the island of Ortygia. A small port, Marina Yachting, is located in the area bordering the canal which separates Ortygia from the mainland. There are numerous floating wharves here.

Quay height: 1,50 m

Protection: Good shelter against winds blowing from quadrants III and

IV; exposed to north-easterly Grecale and southerly Sirocco.

Capacity: Around 280 berths. Around 100 on the Foro Italico quay,

180 at Marina Yachting.

Hazards: S of the entrance configuration there is a sandbank, known

as the Secca Galera: the port is subject to the accumula-tion of silt brought up by the Anapo river. The seabed is bad holding ground almost everywhere, especially in the centre-west zone of the bay.

Harbour plan: Made up of two outer breakwaters and two internal piers: the west breakwater connects onto an old pier and togeth-er they form a dock for fishing boats; from the same break-water, on the external side, an extension which lacks a quayside reaches out. The east breakwater, where there is no quay, protects the port from the mobile sandbanks at the mouth of the Salso river. Between these two breakwa-ters there are two piers which enclose the central dock. Here there are quays on the N and E sides.

Harbour plan: Naturally sheltered bay with three breakwaters for protec-tion. One extends from Favaloro point, the others from around Sanità point. Cavallo Bianco quay is located in the S zone of the port. The ferries moor here, while the fishing boats use a road running along the seashore as a quay.

Statistics: Water surface area: 346.000 m2 (32.000 for pleasure boating)

Protection: South-westerly Libeccio and southerly Mezzogiorno

MAZARA DEL VALLO - A.DI.NA.

Harbour plan: The port system includes: the new port, at the mouth of the Mazàro river, and the canal port, on the last stretch of the river, which has quays running along both sides. All this is protected to the W by the west pier, where the quay only runs along the pier’s first section, and to the E by the defensive breakwater, built on the Palamito sandbank. Emerging at right angles from the west pier stand two more piers equipped with quays. The tourist dock is made up of floating wharves located on the east curvilinear breakwa-ter, on the right as one enters the port.

Quay height: 1,50 m

Protection: Transverse breakers come in from the SSE and SSW.

Shelter is provided against the southerly Sirocco and north-easterly Grecale.

Hazards: Palamito sandbank on the right-hand side of the port, in

the zone facing the defensive breakwater. Port subject to the “Marrobbio”, a sharp variation in water level from a few centimetres to over a metre; the phenomenon does not last more than two hours and is rare, especially in summer. Shallow waters in the canal port, where there are also two road bridges which prevent craft with superstructures over two metres tall from passing.

Harbour plan: Artificial port formed by two curvilinear breakwaters and an outer breakwater. The west breakwater is reserved for cargo ships and fishing boats, but may also be used by pleasure boats. To the N of the east breakwater there is a tourist dock.

Protection: Provides shelter from westerly Ponente and

north-wester-ly Mistral winds. Exposed to southernorth-wester-ly Sirocco side wind.

Capacity: Around 200 berths, 180 in the Club Nautico Lilybeo.

Hazards: When the southerly Sirocco is blowing it is advisable only

to moor in the tourist dock. Sandbanks around the Florio pier and the “Banchina dei Mille” quay. Port subject to the “Marrobbio” phenomenon, a sharp variation in water level from a few centimetres to over a metre. The phenomenon does not last more than two hours and is rare, especially in summer.

towards the S, starting from the green signal light at the entrance. Winds from the S cause strong backwash and undertow.
