GENERAL
1.1
Purpose
This specification together with the referenced documents defines the minimum requirement
for the traceability, marking and colour coding of piping materials for SOHAR REFINERY
IMPROVEMENT PROJECT.
1.2
Scope
This specification shall be applied to piping materials such as pipes, fittings, flanges, valves,
gaskets, bolts and nuts.
1.3
Standard and Codes
The following codes or standards are referenced to this specification.
Where a conflict between this specification and the following Standards and Codes is existing,
company shall be requested to provide guidance.

Material Discrimination Color
2.2.1 Basic Colors shall be used for material discrimination and the same shall be as indicated in
the table below conforming to the nearest Munsell Notation applicable.

2.2.2 Brands of paint used for material discrimination shall be selected by vendor of piping
materials. For all materials, paints containing materials which adversely affect the quality of
the steel shall not be used.

MATERIAL DISCRIMINATION COLOR
3.1
Product Marking of Pipes
The following items shall be indicated as a minimum on all pipes. Marking shall normally be
done in accordance with SOHAR REFINERY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT specifications in
the following order.

3.3
Material Discrimination Color
3.3.1 Discrimination Colors indicated in Table 1(at the end of this document) shall be painted on
the outer surface of all pipes, except for coated pipes and galvanized pipes.
3.3.2 Discrimination Color shall be painted all through the longitudinal length of pipe.
In case of mill production without stockist, one or two(2) color rings at each pipe end shall be
applied considering the mil

s marking (such as stenciling) equipment.
3.3.3 The width of color shall be in accordance with the Fig. 1. In case of mill production without
stockist, the width of color shall be mill

3.3.4 Painting on outer surface shall generally be as shown in Fig.1.

accomplished by stenciling and/or punching, or labeling.

Material Discrimination Color
4.2.1 Material Discrimination Colors in Table 1 and Table 2 shall be painted on the outer surface of
each fitting.
4.2.2 Discrimination Color paint shall be accomplished as indicated in Fig. 2.

FLANGES
6.1
Product Marking for Flanges and Stub Ends
6.1.1 The marking shall be in accordance with ASME B16.5 except as specified in the followings.
The following items shall be punched on the outer surface(rim) of flange and stub ends.
Items which cannot be indicated on the outer surface of stub end, may be marked on the
outer surface of pipe by stenciling or painting.

7.1
Product Marking of Bolts and Nuts
Material identification marks shown in the below table shall be punched on bolts and
nuts separately.
7.1.1 Uncoated Bolt and Nuts
Identification Marks and Discrimination Colors for materials of uncoated bolts and
nuts shall be in accordance with following table and the color shall be applied at the
end of bolt.
