Every online merchant faces the same problem: How to effectively grow revenues without bloating expenses. The process of choosing what tools to use, how to utilize them, and tracking their value is cumbersome and difficult to navigate. The difficulty comes from the amount of options available to merchants. The decision lies somewhere in between the over-arching options of inbound channel development, outbound channel development, or onsite optimization of sorts. Of the choices, none are guaranteed, but all require high levels of energy to create or maintain.

In a perfect world, all online merchants would have a software as a service (SaaS) platform that intelligently monitors and helps optimize these channels. Possible, but only for some high-paying retailers that can afford the monetary costs related. For everyone else, there’s a manual step-by-step process to build and grow the business by testing and measuring the value in each channel.

Every online merchant faces the same problem: How to effectively grow revenues without bloating

expenses.

Online retail, unlike traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, can’t rely on the adage of, “location, location, location”. Sure, a really snazzy domain name will help website visibility, but even so, the traditional

brick-and-mortar experience can’t be replicated on a screen.

This problem affects many online retailers choices of what to begin working on in order of priority.

In many cases, each of these options can create an expensive budget line without directly upping gross revenues.

The testing process for each channel takes time, money, and qualitative research to prove the value. Merchants must make numerous attempts trying to find the option that suits their business the best, without guaranteed success.

The underlying problems all stem back to lack of automation. Many of the tools and channels available can provide value and boost revenue, but require heavy upfront investment or long-term management – this is a roadblock for

numerous businesses.

As shown in Figure 1, the process for properly assessing each tool is consuming. Repeat this process for each tool and costs will scale without guaranteeing positive results.

Every channel boasts that it can turn a business into a powerhouse, but channels react differently for each unique business.

For example, SEO can produce ‘low cost’ leads for a website. However, the costs associated are much higher than most retailers project. Content optimi-zation, content development, site structure optimioptimi-zation, internal & external link building, assessing keyword performance, etc. are all time consuming. Not to mention, SEO is expensive to outsource.

Email marketing is another ‘low cost’ method to drive sales, but it isn’t really low cost either. Yes, email can provide inbox marketing for a fraction of a penny per email, but the total cost of investment includes design, content creation, list building, measurement, and paying the ESP (email service provider). Also, email is limited to opted-in shoppers only – severely limiting the reach of product offerings.

The bottom line being - no stand-alone channel will help sell products without thoughtfully taking the time to build it out. Even then, the ROI isn’t always obviously attributed to that channel.

Again, an ideal solution would be a Wizard of Oz SaaS product that does it all, but that’s not reality for the majority of online retailers.

In summary, each digital channel available to merchants can be more of a cost than an investment if the proper variables aren’t in place to accelerate return on investment (ROI). Using SearchSpring, the risks and costs attributed to channel development are reduced while the ability to sell products increases – providing higher returns. Plus, the reporting provided to merchants delivers business intelligence for additional channel growth opportunities going forward.
