Career Exploration Assignment

Name: ________________________________ Due Date: ________________

Overview: Having a sense of purpose is an important component of college success. This assignment

builds on the academic advising homework you completed earlier in the semester and will help you begin exploring career options and possible majors at WSU.

PART 1: CAREER INTERESTS

You should have previously taken the Career Liftoff Interest Inventory (CLII) and received your results during class. Pages 2 and 3 of the CLII report compare your response patterns to people working in a variety of occupations. These occupations are organized into six broad career types: Realistic,

Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional.

In the boxes below, list the first letter (e.g. R for Realistic, S for Social) for the three career types for which you scored highest on the CLII. This is referred to as your Holland Code.

MY HOLLAND CODE

First Second Third

Each career type on the CLII is subdivided into occupational scales (for example, the “investigative” type is subdivided into physical science, biological science, medical science, etc.). List your top six occupational scales below:

MY TOP SIX OCCUPATIONAL SCALES 1. _____________________ 2. _____________________ 3. _____________________ 4. _____________________ 5. _____________________ 6. _____________________ The final section of the CLII (pages 4 and 5) lists representative jobs for each of your top six occupational scales. Read through these occupations and circle any that you would like to explore further. Copy the circled occupations in the space below:

PART 2: POSSIBLE MAJORS

Please select three majors that interest you and list these below. (If desired, you may include the major you selected previously for your advising unit).

1.________________________ 2.________________________ 3.________________________

Write a paragraph that discusses similarities and differences between these majors and your top six occupational scales (refer to Part 1).

Read through the list of academic majors/minors on the Weber State homepage

(www.weber.edu/majors). See if you can find additional majors that are also compatible with your top six occupational scales (Part 1). List these below and briefly explain why you chose each:
