Summer School Online Registration

February 2013

Online Summer School registration for

Grades 4K-12 will continue for Summer

School 2013. This will be the only venue through which families can

regis-ter for Summer School.

The registration window opens March 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. and remains open

for registration until March 22, 2013 at 12:00 noon.

NEW this year:

Pay-ment is required at the time of registration.

Payment may be made using a credit or debit card. If fees are not paid by

Fri-day at noon during the week in which registration occurs, students will

be automatically dropped from the course.

You will need your Family Access information to register. If you are not enrolled in

OASD during the school year, you will need to apply for a Family Access account

prior to the registration window. Each child in a family must be registered in

Family Access to register for summer school. Applications can be found at

http://www.oasd.k12.wi.us/page.cfm?p=4520 or go to the home page, click on

About Us, select Summer School. Current families who need their Family Access

in-formation, please contact Julie Miller at 262-560-3112.

Families who have difficulty with computer or internet access, can contact us during

business hours for support at 262-560-2115.

posted on the district’s Summer School website at http://www.oasd.k12.wi.us/

page.cfm?p=4520 or go to the home page, click on About Us, select Summer School

for all Summer school information, forms, and instructions.

2013

Online registration will be open from March 11, 2013 at

11:00 a.m. and remains open until March 22, 2013 at

12:00 noon. Families are required to have Family Access

account prior to registering for each child.

New this

year: Payment is required at the time of registration.

Credit or debit cards will be accepted.

Students will be

dropped from the courses if payment is not received by

Friday of the week in which registration occurred.

Follow-up email or letters will only be sent in the event of

conflict or closed classes. No waiting list will be maintained

for classes capped at maximum enrollment.

Should a class be canceled, parents will be notified and given

an opportunity to choose an alternate offering if one is

available.

Summer School registration will NOT be accepted

after March 22, 2013. Registration for K-8 Skills

Instruction classes and High School Credit

Recovery courses will re-open in May.

Students are expected to attend summer school regularly.

Parents are requested to contact the Summer School Office

to report student absences. All calls to report student

absences should be directed to Summit Elementary

School: 262-560-8306 (Health Room).

Students may wear casual dress during the summer session.

It is expected that clothing be neat, clean, and appropriate for

school purposes. The School District dress code policy

applies to Summer School. Students MUST WEAR SHOES

(NO FLIP-FLOPS). No hats are allowed.

MATH IMPROVEMENT

Students will explore mathematical concepts through hands-on thematic activities. Problem solving will be the central focus of this

mathe-matics program. Students will share their thinking and ap-proaches with each other as well as the teacher. They will learn several ways of representing problems and strategies for solving them. The class will be filled with thought provoking questions, speculations, investigations and exploration. Con-siderable instructional time will be spent helping children de-velop good number concepts that will help them with their computation work. This course is designed to meet students unique and individual needs.

FOUR YEAR OLD KINDERGARTEN INTRODUCTION

Is your child eligible for 4 year old kindergarten in the school year 2013-14? (Must be four years old by September 1, 2013).

This class will be a fun introduction to the 4K environment. Stu-dents will have stories, songs, art, games, music, movement and lots of play! This will be a fun way to introduce your child to the OASD 4-K program.

READING & WRITING CONNECTION

This daily, two-hour course will focus on

rein-forcing the strategies of reading essential to

be-coming a successful lifelong reader. Children

will have the opportunity to explore and read a

variety of literature as well as writing for a variety of

pur-poses and audiences. Come join in the excitement of this

“Reading and Writing Connection!”

SUMMER ADVENTURES

Looking for some summer fun? This class will

offer a fun, fresh perspective on physical activity

and leading a healthy lifestyle. Students will be

encouraged to take on new challenges in a

vari-ety of settings including: outdoor education, team sports,

fitness, cooperative games, gymnastics/tumbling, and much

more. Students will also have the opportunity to be engaged

in healthy living curriculum focused on overall wellness.

Memories are precious, pictures are too! It’s time to learn what you can do when you put your photographs and creativity to-gether. Students will use their imaginations to design and cre-ate their own scrapbook pages. Students will work on develop-ing techniques to safely and creatively store their photographs. Each day will present a new technique. Students need to come to class with a scrapbook and about 30 pictures that will be cut and creatively made into precious scrapbook pages.

TRAVEL THE WORLD THROUGH ART

New projects and places are added this year in addition to some old favorites! Who knew that studying geography and

culture through art could be so much fun? Students will travel the world and make art projects that reflect the particular coun-try and all seven continents will be visited. Flags and maps will also be used on our travels. Some projects and places may include Australia: dot painting, China: lanterns, Egypt: jewelry, North America: dream catcher, and many more. Several medi-ums will be incorporated with different paints, markers, pencils, oil pastels, embossing tools, clay, and a variety of craft supplies like beads, feathers, wire, string, etc. Let's pack our art brief-cases and jumpstart our creative, inquisitive minds. We can cover the world in two weeks time!

Have you ever wanted to learn how to play guitar? Well, here's your chance! This two-week course will cover how to play chords and single notes on guitar, as well as basic music theory. Students must have a functional guitar for this course. Stands and lesson books will be provided.

DANCE 1

SPORTS UNIVERSITY

Sports U offers young athletes the opportunity to: enhance their athletic skills, develop ball skills, work on their hand/eye coordination and learn how to become a quality teammate.

Stu-dents will be playing many team games, focusing on flag foot-ball and various foot-ball games. (There will be no tackling in any of the activities). If you are looking for fun in the sun, this is the place for you!

A daily, two-hour course stressing tumbling and apparatus in-tended for beginner through advanced boys and girls. The skills taught will be basic tumbling and apparatus, and interme-diate as well as advanced level gymnastics. After teaching skills, there will be a small competition/meet the last week of summer school for grades 2 - 8. High School gymnasts will judge the competition. Competition will include Girls Floor, Bar, Beam and Vault; Boys Rings, Floor, Vault, and Side Horse.

SURPRISE PARTY 1

Join us as we celebrate summer with a party each day. Parties include a Teddy Bear Picnic, singing songs around the campfire, building sand castles at a Beach Party, and having a Pajama Party. Our Surprise Party projects will reinforce early elementary math concepts (counting, graphing, etc.) and reading concepts (letters, word recognition, etc.)

SPY KIDS: TOP SECRET MISSIONS 1 ALL SECTIONS FULL

Are you ready to take on the challenge of becoming a pro-fessional Spy Kid? Become a part of a highly qualified group

of kids engaging in top secret missions. The class will begin with basic agent training consisting of fingerprinting and completing an obstacle course. Students will do many activities to simulate the life of a real spy or detective such as decoding, having ali-ases or code names, examining evidence, assembling puzzles that lead to more clues, map reading/map making, physical mazes, observation skills, fingerprinting, and footprints. Stu-dents will make their own spy kit/briefcase to take with them to solve each “crime”. Rumor has it that there may be a cookie thief burglary that will need to be solved and a treasure hunt throughout the school/playground.

LEGO MANIA

Build, build, and build. Use your imagination

to design and construct your own Lego

crea-tions. Students will not only design and

cre-ate their own Lego structures but will also use

their Legos to further develop their reading

comprehen-sion. Students will use their Legos to create story

set-tings as well as different objects based on categories

they come up with. Students will need to come to class

with a one gallon baggie filled with Lego pieces. In class

they will take their own inventory so that their pieces will

be returned at the end of the session. A fun and active

way to reinforce reading and creativity.
