TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — Moses spoke to all the people, saying: “A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you” (Deuteronomy 18:15-20).

AUTHORITY FROM GOD
According to Moses, the people decided they didn’t want to hear God’s voice directly any more. It was much too frightening. Why couldn’t God send human teachers, prophets, instead? God agreed, but with a warning. The people had better listen to those teachers, because they spoke in God’s name.
That arrangement, though, had its own problems, for them and for us. How do I know this teacher is truly from God? And if the teacher is from God, are all parts of the teaching meant for me? We have the Church and scrip-ture to help us with those questions, but still there are always a few loose ends.
That is the powerful significance of the sentence in today’s Gospel: “The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” The people knew that this Jesus was authentic—truly a teacher sent by God. They knew it by hearing him.

Fr. Torres comes up with good ideas. His latest, is to keep up the crib. We will have a place to remind us that God became Man. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us”. That’s how much God loves us --- He be-came one of us. Christ in the crib will remind us of his human nature. We join our human nature to His as we grow closer to God each day.
We shall bless the throats of all who attend Mass to-day. We will do the same on Tuesday, the feast of St. Blase. Tomorrow is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. The Mass will be a bit longer for we bless candles at the beginning of Mass. Bring your Baby Jesus to have blessed too.
The Holy Family brought Jesus to the Temple to psent Him to God. He was God, the Son. The Father re-ceived Him. We learn that Jesus is the light of all peo-ple. In order to get to God the Father we follow Jesus in His humanity; sacred humanity.
El Padre Torres siempre tiene buenas ideas. Su idea mas reciente es de mantener el naciemiento durante todo el año para recordarnos que Dios se hizo hombre. La Palabra se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros. Esto nos muestra lo mucho que Dios nos ama --- Se convirtió en uno de nosotros. Cristo en el pesebre nos recordará de su naturaleza humana. Unimos nuestra naturaleza humana a la de Él, para acercarnos más a Dios cada día.
Vamos a bendecir las gargantas de todos los que asis-ten a la misa de hoy. Vamos a hacer lo mismo el martes 3 de febrero, fiesta de San Blas. Mañana es la fiesta de la Presentación de Jesús en el Templo. La Misa será un poco más larga por que al principio de la Misa vamos a bendecir las velas. Traigan tambien a su niño Jesús para bendecirlos también.
José y María llevaron a Jesús al Templo para presen-tarselo a Dios y el Padre lo recibio.. Jesús es Dios, el Hijo. Este día de La Candelaria nos enteramos de que Jesús es la luz de los hombres. Con el fin de llegar a Dios el Padre seguimos a Jesús en su humanidad; santa hu-manidad.

PASTOR’S PLANS
I will visit the doctor who did my operation on Thursday,
February 26. On that day, he will decide when to operate
to remove my colostomy.
During February the priests will be going on retreat at
various times. Fr. Peter was on retreat last week. I will be
with you the whole month. I will go back to the hospital
in March or April for a few days,. After that I will regain
all my strength.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The Oil of the Sick, usually labeled OI (for Oleum
Infirma-rum), is often reserved with chrism and the oil of catechumens
in an ambry. An ambry is a cabinet, often beautifully orna-mented and kept near the baptistery in the church. Olive oil, with no fragrance added, is blessed at the Chrism Mass in Holy Week by the bishop, although there is now a provision for a priest to bless oil if none is available. This restores to our Latin Rite practice a tradition never lost in the Eastern tradition, in which priests consecrate the oil of the sick, even at the sick person’s home. Any vegetable oil may be used now, since olive oil is difficult to obtain in some places. Many priests keep a small supply of oil close at hand in a small metal tube called a “stock.”
In the former rite, every sense of the body was anointed, accompanied by a prayer for forgiveness of sin. So, the eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, hands, and feet were all touched. Today, this is simplified to an anointing of the forehead and the hands, but generally today the oil is used more lavishly, and the sym-bolism of touch so central to the rite is enhanced. Often, a priest will invite everyone present to join in the “laying on of hands.” Sick persons are often pushed aside or feared in our culture, and to be reverently touched in love can be a profound experience of God’s healing, forgiving, accepting presence through the ministry of the Church.
OBLATE ASSOCIATES
There are two groups of Oblate Associates. One is in English, one is in Spanish. The English group will meet on February 11 (Wednesday) at 6:30p.m. We meet for an hour. An Oblate associate is someone who wants to live ion the spirit of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The Oblates have been there since the beginning. What do you see in them that you like? The Spanish group meets on Sunday. If you are interested in learning about our way of life, (Oblates of Mary Immacu-late, join us. Father Porfirio is in charge of the Spanish group.
