Alternate Region

Placements Policy

 Student Teaching placements are made within a 60-mile radius of CMU’s main campus or

the candidate’s preferred Michigan address provided at time of application for student teaching.

If a candidate has a permanent residence* that is in an alternate-region (area not

covered in the five student teaching centers), that candidate must:

 Apply to student teach in an alternate region via the Center for Clinical Experiences.  Work with the CMU University Coordinator regarding an appropriate affiliation

agreement with a higher education institution in the region of residence.

Understand there will be an additional fee of up to $1500 for a site-based

supervisor outside of Michigan.

 Please note- not all states are part of the SARA (State Authorization Reciprocity

Agreements). Before any alternate region placement can be approved, verification of the state’s inclusion in SARA is required.

*The Center for Clinical Experiences may request official documentation of

permanent residence as part of the application for placement in an alternate region.

(36)

Placement is a Privilege

The Cooperating Teacher is opening their

classroom to you.

Numerous factors are taken into consideration

when making placements.

For example districts may require:

 that the principal assigns the placements

 that the student teacher has a specific minimum GPA  we place there only in the fall semester

Your assigned University Coordinator has a professional

relationship with districts and teachers in the area you will be living.

Please be assured that the placement they make is in your best interest.

(37)

Field Experience Requirements

for your Major/ Minor

Early Childhood Major/Minors require a placement

in a preschool setting. They will have 2- eight week

placements.

Candidates with certain minors will have a split

placement in that subject area to meet MDE

requirements.

Candidates with multiple majors

may

split their

placement between two Cooperating Teachers in the

same school (

depending on availability

).
