Dear Parishioners,
Here is a reflection for this week’s readings:
Invited to dinner in today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches a couple of lessons, one for the guests and one for the host. In both cases, he upends social conventions still
common today. Most guests like to think they’re important and most hosts expect some kind of reciprocity from their guests. Jesus teaches us that as a guest we
should not presume to sit above anyone else. As a host we should invite those who do not have the wherewithal to repay us. It all starts, as the writer of Sirach observes, with humility. To grasp for honor or status or recompense from others is misguided. What’s important is to “find favor with God” (Sirach 3:18). Jesus’ last words today resemble his wordship Matthew’s account of the Last Judgment. In Matthew, Jesus teaches his disciples that those who sit on his right in the kingdom are those who gave food, drink, clothing, and love to the neediest on each. Similarly here in Luke, Jesus tells his companions that those who invite the poor, weak, and disabled “will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous” (Luke 14:14). May we be deserving on that day.
Do you conduct yourself with humility? How can you change the way you act toward others?
Love and Prayers,
Fr. Tuan

RE NEWS
Dear RE Families,
Just a reminder that RE will begin on Tuesday Sept. 10th and Wednesday Sept. 11th. If you haven’t already registered please do so soon, classes are already filled and others are filling quickly.
There has been some question as to the attendance and tardy policy for the upcoming RE year. If your child misses more than 4 classes they will not be able to
go on to the next year. If a parent misses a Parental session, that will count as 2 absences. The absence/tardy policy is in the Parental Handbook found on our website. A school or sports event/practice/game will not be an excused absence or tardy. With children coming in late or leaving early it truly disrupts the flow of the class for the Catechists and the students. This is a subject that Father Tuan and I have discussed in length and feel very strongly about. We are not trying to punish
those involved in sports or school activities, but trying to build an active faith community. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.
Peace,
Fred Ban, Director Of Faith Formation
St. Teresa of Calcutta: commonly known as Mother Teresa and honored in
the Roman Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta,[7] was an Albanian-Indian [4]Roman Catholicnun and missionary.[8] She was born in Skopje, then part of the Kosovo Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire. After living in Skopje for eighteen years, she moved to Ireland and then to India, where she lived for most of her life.
In 1950, Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation that had over 4,500 nuns and was active in 133 countries in 2012. The congregation manages homes for people who are dying of HIV/
AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis. It also runs soup kitchens, dispensaries, mobile clinics, children's and family counselling programmes, as well as orphanages and schools. Members take vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, and also profess a fourth vow—to give "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor."[9]
Teresa received a number of honours, including the 1962 Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize and 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. She was canonised (recognised by the church as a saint) on 4 September 2016, and the anniversary of her death (5 September) is her feast day.
A controversial figure during her life and after her death, Teresa was admired by many for her charitable work. She was praised and criticised for her opposition to abortion, and criticised for poor conditions in her houses for the dying. Her authorised biography was written by Navin Chawla and published in 1992, and she has been the subject of films and other books. On September 6, 2017, Teresa and St. Francis Xavier were named co-patrons of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Calcutta.
