About Japan

Japan is an island nation located in north east Asia, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, Sea of Japan, East China Sea, and Sea of Okhotsk. In addition to its four main islands, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, Japan is home to several thousand islands covering an area of about 3,000 kilometers from its northern to southern ends. Most of Japan's population is concentrated in and around its major cities, and 70% of the country is covered by forests and mountainous areas. Japan prides itself on its advanced technology and industry, as well as its cultural heritage spanning thousands of years, and its beautiful seasonal nature which differs from region to region.

The Meiji restoration in 1868 marked the beginning of Japan's interaction with the West and propelled the modernization of the country. Impressive developments were made in economics, industry, culture, and many other areas.

Japan is very active in sports, hosting the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964 and 2020, and the

Winter Olympics in Sapporo in 1972, and Nagano in 1998. World Table Tennis

Championships in Tokyo in 1956, 1983 and 2014, Nagoya in 1971, Chiba in 1991, Osaka in 2001 and Yokohama in 2009. Japan has been host to many world championships for many kinds of sports as well.

In March in 2011, Japan suffered horrendous damages from an earthquake and tsunami in the Pacific Ocean coastal area of the Tohoku region, but the nation is steadily proceeding on the road to recovery.
