Many
of thosewho
takeup
the study of astrology complain of thegreat obscurity of the
books
of study, of themany
technical terms,incomprehensible to the laity,
and
especially of the difficulties of thecalculations,
which
latter are unsurmountable for thosewho
have no
knowledge
of mathematicsand
cosmology.I will, therefore, try to
remove
these obstacles,by
using foreignnames
as little as possible,and
by
simplifying the calculations in such amanner
thatany one
of average intellectand
with aknowledge
ofordinaryarithmetic,
may
be
abletofollowthisstudy withoutmuch
difficulty.Further, I will try to
be
as briefand
clear as possible, omitting allsuperfluous digressions,
and
yet giving a fairly complete survey of thatbranch of Astrology
which
is called GenethliacalAstrology, that
which
applies to nativity or birth.
This branch is
by
far themost
importantand
therefore countsmost
students.
Astrology has the
advantage
over other occult sciences in that itasks
no
"belief" of the student, but only investigation.Any
one
who
takes
up
the study of hisown
birth-horoscope,withsome
assiduity, willbe
able to demonstrateby
numerous
facts, lookedup
by
himself, thatAstrology is true, is founded
on
facts in nature.To
thisend
it is positively necessary toknow
the exact time ofone's birth,
and
as, for the last half century, the hour of birthhad
tobe
filled in at the registry*),one
mightgo
there for inquiry.Next
you
willhave
to obtainan
ephemeris2) for the year in
which
you
were
born;you
may
then cast yourown
horoscopeand
study it.You
will findhow
extremely interesting this study is!Those
who
know
by
researchand
experience,how
much
our life,our doings
and
dealings, ourmoods,
in fact, all thathappens
in theworld, is influenced
by
thepowers
thatwork
in theCosmos,
oftenwonder
how
it is possible that a science such as astrology, which
comprises the study of those cosmic powers, has relatively so
few
students
and
somany
opponents. It is strange, for it is easy toshow
the truth of astrology practically, to
any one
who
wishes it.One
reason of astrology being discredited is surely tobe
found inthe rubbish brought into the market under the
name
of astrologyand
1
) This is the case on the continent, but not alas, in Great Britain, where date
suffices.

every branch of science,
however,
fraudand
charlatanism aretobe
found. But the principal causes are the
dogmatism
ofmodern
religionsand
the rapid
development
during the last centuries of materialism, which
has brought
man
to accept only thatwhich he
can observe with histhree-dimensional senses x
)
and
explain throughwell-known
physicallaws, regardless of the cause, the foundation of these
phenomena.
We
need
not accept anything supernatural in astrology, accordingtothis doctrine also everything
happens
along naturaland
unchangeable
laws
; but also it teaches us that in the Universelaws
operateofwhich
we
stillknow
very little;we
seethem
in theiroutward
results, butso far
we
can only guesshow
they work. For this reason astrology isfor the greater part
an
empirical science, itisfoundedon
observationswhich have been
made
for centuries.Astrology begins to gradually
draw
the attention of the public, oflate. In the United States there is already a University of Astrology,
where
one
may
graduate in this science,and
the time iscoming
when
the elements of astrology will
be
taught in schools as a part ofcos-mology, and
forEngland
as well, that time will come, however
conser-vative the English
may
be. Is it not farmore
useful for a child tounderstand something of life in the
Cosmos,
than tobe
able to give the exact date of the settling of Flemishweavers
in Pembrokeshire, or toknow
on
which day
for the first time the eldest son of the Englishsovereign
was
called Prince ofWales?
What
great a part astrology might playinthesphereofeducation,in self-education as well as in the
hands
of parentsand
teachers!By
going carefully through the children's horoscopes, they
would
get tounderstand their pupils better
and
realise that under certain planetaryinfluences they could scarcely help acting in
an
unusualmanner and
thus
many
an
unjustly inflictedpunishment
willbe
left aside.Every
child bears at his birth hisown
characteristics in him,and
these will never change, they are inseparable of his individuality
and
this thepedagogue
has to take into account, ifhe
wants
tomake
of a child
what
canbe
made
of him.And
for this, accurateknowledge
of his characteristics
and
talents,on
which
his horoscope throws light,must
show
theway.
As
things often arenow,
failures aremade
ofthem
; ignorant of the laws, they try to lead the child in adirectionnot
meant
for him,and
the natural talent gets suffocated. Yet, it willassert itself later, but only after
much
disappoinmentand
failure.The
material sciences,however
far advanced, are stillfarfrom beingcomplete,
and
moreover
deal with the outer side only;totheFoun-!)
By
three-dimensional senseswe
mean
thephysical senses,bywhichwe
can onlypercept that which is physical in length, breadth and height Our astral and
mental senses, however, allow us to
make
observations in higher dimensions;are not as yet sufficiently
advanced
to set themselves withsome
ground
up
ascompetent
judges of the occult sciences.We
may
respect the great progress of the material sciences, and
apply ourselves to
them
with the greatest interest, ifwe
still bear inmind
that they are far from being omniscientand
that to a high degreeit is
narrow
and
conceitedand
in the true sense of theword
"unscientific" that a great thinker like e.g. Hackel, the
German
"Darwin"
puts his professoral vetoon
theological,cosmological,teleolo-gical
and
ethnological proofs of immortality.Not
everything canbe
reduced to a palpable scientific ground."
Though
the astrological influencesdo
not fallbeyond
the sphere ofnatural laws, they
do
fallbeyond
the circle inwhich
our sciences ofnature
move
and
therefore material scientists are incompetent to puttheir veto
on
them.How
often are the material scientistscompelled
tochange
their theoriesand
hypotheses, in order to accept in theend
thatwhich, centuries ago,
was
acknowledged
tobe
trueby
the occultscience?We
need
only point totheatom-theorywhich
hasbeen
alteredrepeatedlyand
the theory of vibrations.And
likewise it willhappen
with chemistry,the great
number
of elements will melt togetherinto theone
Ur-elementthat Occultism has,
and
ofwhich
the other elements are onlyvibration-proportions. Occult Science has
always been
some
centuries inadvance
of the material sciences; it is the
mother
of those sciencesand
themother
of religions as well; for it contains the esoteric, the inner sideof all religions.
And
astrology is a part of the occult sciences. All religions are
based
on
the esoteric doctrineand
are thedifferent, outer (exoteric) expressions of it.
However
much
they differ, they areall necessary; for all
men
have
not evolved in thesame
direction,each
differs in his conception of truth. His present conception serves
him
aslong as it is needful to his evolution. After that
he
searches, guidedby
intuition in another direction.Change
of conception in religion should notalways
be
ascribed to inconstancy; it is often theconsequence
of moraland
intellectualgrowth.
All religions are
views upon
the greatcastle oftruth,seenfromdifferentangles
and
through amore
orlessdenseveilof dust.Allrevealtousone
sideofthe Universal Truth, but in proportion to the veil,
more
or lesshazy
and
twisted.They
are all,however,
usefuland
needfulto theirfollowers.The
occult sciences,which
give us thekey
tomany
mysteries oflife
and
evolution,were wrapped
in ashape, comprehensibletoinitiatesonly,
and
this is to a sense the case with our Bible as well. Thisisnot only for the reason that
humanity
as awhole
was
not yet ripe tounderstand the truths
which
they contain, but also because the initiateswere
officially forbidden to speak of them, during the long time ofpersecutions to
which
theywere
exposed.So
they kept theirwisdom

The
first written scientificworks
on
astrology areby
Claudius Ptolomy.
He
wrote
in the year 126 A.D. his wellknown
four
books
on
the Influence of the Stars.The
books
are called: theTetrabiblos or Quadripartite.
The
thirdand
fourthbook
contain "theStudyof Births".
Ptolomy
was
a follower of the Alexandrian school;he
was
highly celebrated during the reignofAdrian
and Antony
Pius.He
correctedthe existing tables of the fixed stars
and
drew
up
new
tables for themovement
of sun,moon
and
planets. Thirteenbooks
contain thefamous
Ptolomaic System.
He
seems
tohave
founded his system of astrology,!) Papus (pseudonym G6rard Encausse) Science Occulte (Trait6 elementaire). In
this work on p.p. 145 150 a very clear representation is given of the
way
inwhichsuch a "livre mysterieux" came into existence and you will see by it
how
absolu-tely impossible it is without knowing the key, to understand such a book.

) Lord Bacon says regarding this: "It shows verylittle
common
senseto classifyastronomy
among
the mathematical sciences; this classification does harm to itsEgyptian astrologer
who
lived before Moses. In Persia there lived, during Darius Hystaspis' reign, the astrologer
Gjamasp, surnamed Al Hakim,
theWise
One.
He was
thecounsellorand
friend of the king;and
ofhim
it is told thatby
astrologicalcalcu-lations
he
predicted thecoming
of Jesusand
ofMahomet.
He
alsopredicted that the religion of the Persians,
which
was
based on
magic,was
doomed.
In India, China
and
Egypt, lateron
in the South ofEurope
as well,astrology
was
highlyrenowned.
Of
theGreek
astrologerswe
need
only mentionthenames
of Anaxi-mandre,Anaxagoras
and
later Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, Procles.A
saying of Hippocrates is a.o. "that theman
who
is ignorant of thescienceofastrology, deservesthe
name
offoolratherthanthatofphysician."The
astrologer Nigidius Figulus, friend to Cicero, predictedatOctavius'birth, that the latter should
become
ruler of the world.We
know
that the ancient Persians,Babylonians,Assyrians,Chaldeans
and
ancient Egyptians studied astrology,and
that they performed theirdeeds of
some
importance, at times indicatedby
astrological calculationsto
be
themost
favourable. Historyshows
ushow
great apower
thepriest-astrologers obtained
by
thisknowledge;
even monarchs
feltdependent
on
them.Would
thishave been
possible if their prophecieshad
notproved
irrevocably true, if theirknowledge
were
onlyshow
and
their predictions fraud?Reason answers
this question decidedly inthe negative.
These
priestshad moreover
great astronomicalknowledge.
A
proof of thismay
serve: the calculation of the regularly recurringeclipse of the sun
and
moon
are stillmade
by
means
of theChaldean
Zaros.
Our
presentday
astronomers could not correct this formula. It
was
chiefly the Arabianswho
brought astrology to theWest,
though
it is probable that long before that time Egyptian astrologersintroduced it in Europe.
The
Egyptian astrologerswere
the trusted counsellorsand
Wends
ofthe reigning kings; it
was
in fact theywho
ruled.The
ancient Jewish books, theKabbalah and
theTalmud
arealto-gether
based
on
astrological principles.Here
a
great part is playedespecially
by
the value ofnumbers
of the planetsand
of the lettersofthe
Hebrew
alphabet.Of
thebooks
of the Kabballah it is especiallythe
famous
Zohar which
preaches a wonderful philosophy of life intheCosmos
compared
toand
connected with that ofman.
Andrzej
Niemojewski
says:"The
greatBook

Lettertypes, theWords
Constellations,and
the Chapters Astralperiods.And
one
readsthere, that
Humanity shaped
its earthly Order after the greatTimepieceof the
World, and modelled and
corrected its philosophy, its ethics, itssocial ideas after it."
An
ancient Jewish Stellar-Chart.were
compulsory, the latter especially being studied in connection withsound and number.
All old occult manuscripts,
among
which
our Biblemay
be numbered,
are full of astrology;
and
ifMoses
forbade the study of astrology, itwas
most
probably onlyby
reason of the unscientificway
inwhich
itwas
studied. Itwas much
more
difficult in thosedays
forone
tomake
use of astrological tables, education not being so
common
as to day;hence
therewas
asmuch
deceptionand
pretence to fortune-telling asto day,
nay
more
so, as theage
was
a farmore
ignorantand
super-stitious one. It
was
this abuseand
charlatanismwhich Moses
forbade.The
astrologers Thracyllus (fatherand
son)were
the counsellors ofTiberius
and
Nero.Of
the father a peculiar anecdote isknown,
men-tioned
by
Tacitusand
Plutarch. Thracyllusknew
toomuch
ofthe secretthrowing
him
off.And
he
asked Thracyllus ifhe
knew
everythingconcerning himself.
"Yes"
was
the answer. "Iknow
that Iam
ingreatdanger of life but
Your
Majesty as well; for Iknow
also thatyou
willoutlive
me
onlyby
24
hours."The
emperor
who
had an
implicit beliefin Thracyllus did not carry out his intention.
Thracyllus, the son, predicted Nero's future imperial dignity.
M.
Champollion, found, inone
of theRamses-tombs,

clearly indicates the accuracy of their calculations. They
knew
the relation
between
thetwelve
signs of the Zodiacand
the severalparts of the
human
body.The
BritishMuseum
contains anumber
of horoscopes writtenon
papyrus.
The
Egyptiansmade
their predictions chiefly according to theso-called secondary or moon-directions.
Plato, Socrates' pupil, studied the influence of sun
and
moon
on
theformation of both sexes.
Heraclites, a pupil of Plato
and
Aristotle,wrote
a treatiseon
theHyleg
in the horoscopeand on
the influence of the sun as life-giver.Europe
received its civilisation from the eastand
also the scienceof astrology as
we
already saw.From
Greece
and
Italy it penetratedinto the other countries of Europe.
One
of thebest-known
Christian astrologers isPaul
the Philosopher( 850).
Among
thepopes
we
find several students of astrology; e.g.Pope
Sylvestre(9921002),
Pope
John
XX
and
John
XXI
were
keen
astrologers.
Thomas
Aquinas
says:"The
celestial bodies are theCause
of all thattakes place in this sub-lunar world.
They
influence thehuman
actionsdirectly, but not every action caused
by
them
is inevitable."(Summa,
Quaest
XV,
art. V).Further the
famous
AlbertusMagnus,
bishopand
architectwho
wrote
a
symbol-system
which
is held in highhonour
with Freemasons.He
says a.o.: "All that nature
and
art produces is drivenby
celestialpowers.
The
signs in the skyand
the celestial bodies existed beforeall other created things
and
therefore influence allthatcame
intoexistenceafter them, etc."
We
may
mention:Roger
Bacon,Guido
Benati, court-astrologer toFrederick II.
And
PetriAbano
or Francisco della Stabili, friend to Dante,John
de Luna, Cardinal Peter d'Ailly(13501425).
Dante,
whose
words:
"Only
follow your star, thehaven
of gloryawaits you", are well
known.
In another passagehe
says: "Astrologyis the
most
sublime, the noblest science, withoutany
faults."Giordano
Bruno, Ruysbroeck,Jacob
Boehme
and
Spinoza, believed inastrology. Further
Hieronymus
de Manfredi, professor of medicineattheJohann
Stdffler, professor of mathematics atTubingen,computed
theexact date of his death,
which
was
to take placeby
an accident.By
inviting friends
and
staying quietly athome,
he
tried toevade
thepossibility of
an
accident. In a dispute,however,
wishing to prove hisarguments,
he
went
toa
high book-shelf, to seizea
folio-volume,he
felland
got a deadlywound.
We
may
mention
thenames
ofMelanchton and
Johann
Miiller.The
formerwrote
a.o.a
preface to awork
of the astrologerSchonez
and
delivered lectures
on
astrology.Tycho de
Brake
(1546 1601) tried to raise astrology to a religion.He
says e.g.:"The
stars rule the lot ofman,
butGod
rules the stars."He was
however
not blind to the abuse,made
of astrology.Paracelsus studied especially the influence of the planets
on
thevegetable
and
mineralkingdom
and
discovered a largenumber
ofmedicines,
by
comparing
themicrocosmos
(man) to themacrocosmos
(our solar system), led
by
logicand
intuition.Keppler, the
famous
astronomerwas
an
astrologer as well. It isuniversally
known
how
he
predicted to Wallenstein, at thattimeyoung
and unknown,
his future glory.He
predicted several details concerninghis career, the
enemies
he
would
make,
his eagerness forfame
and
glory, his marriage
and
financial circumstancesand
the exactday
ofWallenstein's death.
Of
William Lilly, thewell-kwown London
astrologer it isknown
that
he
foretold the greatLondon
fire in 1666. His astrologicalworks
are still being studied.
Pico
de
Mirandola,a
fierceopponent
of astrology,gave
at his deaththe
most
striking proof of the truth of astrology, forhe
died at theexacthour that the astrologers
had
predicted.Dr.
John
Butler, anotheropponent
of astrology,who
in order tobe
able to
oppose
it withmore
successand
toshow
itsweak
points,took
up
the study of astrology,changed
tactics after that study, viz. instead of attacking astrology as he originally intended to
he
wrote a
book
toshow
the truth of astrology.Professor
Max
Miilleronce
said, thatmany
of our greatestmen
ofintellect studied astrology, but thatthe majority of
them
never expressedtheir opinion
on
that point for fear of being ranked with the quacks inthis line, the so-called astrologers
and
the fortune-tellers.Francis Bacon, baron of Verulam,
one
of the greatestminds
of histime, believed in planetary influences, just like Isaac
Newton,
the greatresearcher
and
thinker.He
defended
astrology against the astronomerHalley
by
saying: "Ihave
studied the subject, Mr. Halley,you
have
not!"
Newton
never expressed his opinionon
thingshe
was
notcertainabout. His great caution in thisdirectionisas
well-known
ashisenormous
scientific merits.
Of
theGerman
astrologerswe
may
mention J.W.
Pfaff.He
on
Napoleon's death,which
was
to coincide with a conjunctionofMars
and
Saturn (May, 5th, 1821).Leibnitz studied astrology
and
believedinit.That
Goethe, Shakespeare,and
also e.g. Sir Walter Scott believed in astrology isnottobe
doubted.Valentin Weigelius, inhis"AstrologyTheologized"(1649)callsastrology
the light of Nature; "it comprises everything, all sciences, arts, branches
of
knowledge,
qualitiesand
conditions ofbody
and
spiritand
furtherall conditions
and
occurrences in the Universe. Everything takes itsorigin in the planets,
and
accordingto ourusing orabusingtheinfluences,we
feelthem
tobe
good
or bad."He
says that astrologyand
religionought to
go hand
inhand and
that the study of theMacrocosmos
(theUniverse) as well as of the
Microcosmos (man)
ismeant by
it."What
is outside us in our surroundings is also in us
and
theexpression:"a
wise
man
rules his stars," does not allude to the stars intheMacro-cosmos, but to those in the Microcosmos.
The
sky of theMacrocosmos
with its perpetual revolution corresponds exactly to the
inward
sky ofthe Microcosmos."
The
last is, as it were, a microscopic reflection of the first in all itschanges
as well.It
would
be
easy to enrich this list with a largenumber
ofnames
of enlightened thinkers
who
all studied astrology, but formy
purposethe
above-mentioned
names
will suffice.Is it astonishing that
he
who
has fixed his opinionby more
or lessthorough study
and
research,compares
the generalpublictoacolour-blind
man,
who
is positive that redand
green are the selfsamecolour?Those
who
ignore the influence of the planets, without precedingthorough research, are simply guilty of pedantry, J
) seeing that they
prefer their immature, rash judgment,
founded on
tradition only, tothatof great thinkers,
who
throughout all ageshave devoted
their lives tothe inquiry after the effect of
powers
of nature, littleknown
as yet.We
sayonce
more,investigateand
you
willfindthe truthofitaffirmedin
your
own
life.It
would
be
highly interesting to collect particulars, attheregistrars' of peoplewho
were
born at exactly thesame
timeand
thesame
place.If the data of births
were
correct,one
would
find that such liveswere
remarkable in their similarity.
In history several cases of this kind are
known,
among
which
thefollowing characteristic
example:
In a paper of 1820 is
mentioned
the death ofSamuel
Hennings,who
was
bornon
June
4th 1738, at thesame
moment
asKing George
HI,and
at thesame
place, St. Martin.He
came
into business in Octoberl
)
Among
thesewe may
count prof. Franz Cumontwho
afewyearsagoopeneda campaign against astrology, put
down
in hiswork"AstrologyandReligionamong
the Greeks and Romans."
He
bases his work on the standing-point: "Thestarting-point of Astrology is, of course, a belief."
Wrong,professorIThe
starting-point of Astrology is observation. If the basis of
1760,
when
George
IIImounted
the throne.He was
marriedon
Sept. 8th, 1761 just likeKing
George,and
after both liveshad gone
quiteparallel, both died
on
January 29th 1820, at thesame
hour.They
had
the
same number
of children, of thesame
sex.The
Laws
ofKarma
and
Reincarnation.Of
thesetwo
laws, which, according toTheosophy
ruletheUniverseand
thereforeman,
a brief explanation is desirable.We
give in afew
words
the leading ideaofthesetwo
laws,becausethey spread
some
lighton
the causeand
the substanceofthe planetaryinfluences. For the study of astrology it is absolutely unnecessary that
one
believes in reincarnation. Astrologyneeds
no
foundation of belief, astrology only asks thorough inquiry
and
this is inevitably followedby
"believing" ("knowing"). I
know
anumber
ofmen
who
do
notbelievein reincarnation, yet nevertheless are convinced astrologers, though, in
my
opinion, they will aftercontinued studyacknowledge
boththese laws.The
law
ofKarma
l) is not likely to
be a
stumbling block toany
one.
What
rational being does not accept the inexorablelaw
of causeand
effect?We
see the proofs of it daily, round
us.Reincarnation is difficult to prove,
one
canbecome
convincedofthe truth of this
law
by
logical reasoning only; forwhat somebody
elsethinks to
have
seen or experienced of former lives, isno
proof for uspersonally.
The
Law
ofKarma
or of causeand
effect,teachesthateveryaction,every thought, carries its inexorable
consequence
with it;and
forman,
this consequence, this reaction, can
be
shown
in the present or in a following earthly existence. So he
creates, in his present life, thecon-dition of the future,
and
the conditions of the present are the productof his actions in former earthly lives.
Man,
the individual soul, theEgo
2) is, after a certain period born1) The word
Karma
means "action", which will later on become clearwhen
we
speak about the meaning of theQ
aspect.2)
What
is theEgo?
The occult science tells us that the Ego, the I, the Higher Self, all of them names for the same Principle is the
God
who
lives in man; speakswhen
thesoul acknowledges to be an I; in other words, it is the Divine sparkin us,without,
however, being
God
himself.Dr. R. Steiner says as to this: ...."By thatwhichprecedes the misunderstanding
that the occult science asserts that the I is one with God, is likely to arise. But it does not assert at all, that the I is God, but that it is of the same nature and the
same substance as God. Does anybody assert that a drop of water taken from the
sea is the sea,
when
he says that that drop is of the same substance as the sea? If one likes to use a comparison, one can say that the I is related to God, as thedrop is to the sea.
Man
can find something divine in himself, because his inneranew
ina
material body,which
latter serveshim
asan
instrument forobservation
and
action, tohave
experienceswhich he
cannot learnon
the higher astraland
mental planes. Thisbeing born again oughtnot to be
mixed up
with transmigration of souls, ofwhich
is said thata
human
soul can pass into alower
creature. There isno
regression,but continuous evolution.
We
see thiseverywhere
in nature.Man
isborn as
man, and
remainsman, though
in his former periods of evolu-tionhe
had
togo
through the mineral-, plant-and
animal condition,which
does notmean
thathe
was
a mineral, a plant, oran
animal.There are higher,
no lower
conditions tobe
reachedby
him
; exceptinvery rare cases.
We
must go
along with the current of universalevo-lution
on
earthand
we
can only delay ourown
evolution, in spiritualand
moral sense,by
our thoughtsand
actions, but check it,we
cannot.We
shall see presentlyhow
we, by
means
of astrology,become
ableto take our evolution in hand, so that
we,
instead of being stragglers,get
more
and
more
in the front rows.Every
man
has severalweak
points in his characterand he
feelsintuitively that it is his moral duty to take
up
the hatchet against thesefaults, which, as occultism teaches,
began
for the greater part informerincarnations
when
he
knew
less of the cosmiclaws
thannow.
However
low
man
may
be
morally, there is something inhim
which
tellshim
what
isgood
or bad,however
much
the conceptions ofgood
and
bad
may
differ with themany
racesand
nations; for untilman
attainsPerfection, these conceptions are only relative. His standpoint in
evo-lution points out to
him
the correct placewhere
he
has tobe
and
thatstandpoint,
combined
with thegood
and
bad
consequences created informer lives, determine his place
and
rule of conduct inthisincarnation.We
usually speak ofgood
and
bad Karma, though
the termshar-monious
(A)and
inharmonious (n)karma
would
be
better.There
canbe no
question of bad,because
aim and
final result areharmony.
So
at a certain time,man
becomes
conscious of his duty to tryand
conquer his
lower
nature with all its faultsand bad
habits, untilhe
no
longer is the slave, but
becomes
the master. According to his successin this,
he
not onlybecomes
gradually the ruler of hisown
destiny,but also, in time,
he
obtains the mastery of the mineral, vegetableand
animal
kingdom and
of the forces of naturewhich
play a part in them.But
in order tobecome
the master of nature,he must
firsthave
con-quered himself, i.e.
he
must be
able to lookupon
hislower
naturethe non-self, unselfishly as that
which
is transitoryand
so subservientto the higher self,
which
is constant, universal the Ego.This is the final purpose of our earth-evolution
and
whether
we
want
ornotwe
must go
along withthisearthlygrowth.As
we
have
seen,we
can co-operateand
oppose. In the first casewe
bring ourselves inharmony
with theCosmos,
i.e. the Source of all life, in the lastwe
shut this Source off to ourselves
