Why the University of Colorado Denver
The University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus (university), one of the nation’s top
public urban research universities, has 134 degree programs in 13 schools and colleges and 18,000
students. Of particular interest is the AACSB accredited Business School with multiple faculty well
versed in topics such as the PRC’s bond and stock markets, China’s service industry, comparative
human resources practices between China and the US, venture capital in China, and PRC business
school methodologies. The Business School’s new building provides state‐of‐the‐art infrastructure
for program delivery and the Business School offers programs in entrepreneurship, sustainability,
energy, bio‐entrepreneurship, health care management, and sports management. The university’s
new Anschutz Medical Campus will soon reach 6.5 million gross square feet for conducting cutting
edge research, education, and clinical initiatives. Its University Hospital is rated the US’ best
academic hospital (University HealthSystem Consortium). The university also has collaborations
across all four campuses in the University of Colorado system, a system that is Colorado’s 4th largest
employer and awards 42% of its bachelor’s degrees, 60% of its master’s degrees, 57% of its
doctorates, and 82% of its first‐professional degrees.
Why the Institute for International Business (IIB)
The IIB, one of 33 national Centers of International Business Education and Research as designated
by the US Department of Education, has extensive expertise in China programs. It has led numerous
study tours to China over the past 20 years: 9 faculty programs, 22 student programs, and 3
business programs. It has created and conducted numerous development programs for business
people and faculty in international business, international entrepreneurship, and global human
resources. The IIB is instrumental in the development of international business programs for
students in all business disciplines, and in the areas of architecture and planning, arts and media,
foreign languages, geography, health management, political affairs, and public administration. It also
serves as a national international business resource for business, faculty, and students across the
US, particularly in the Rocky Mountain west. The IIB has developed comprehensive international
business programs for clients such as IBM and Coors Brewing in the US, Mitsui in Japan, SsangYong
in Korea, and Sinopec‐Jinling Petrochemical and Guizhou Provincial Government in the PRC.
STRENGTHS
Entrepreneurship
Colorado is rated as the 2nd best state in entrepreneurship and innovation (US Chamber of
Commerce 2012), 4th for entrepreneurial activity (Kauffman Foundation Index of
Entrepreneurial Activity 2012), 3rd for economic competitiveness (Beacon Hill Institute 2012),
1st for growth in the startup job sector (StartUpHire 2012), and 4th in the number of new
companies per 1000 employees. Information technology is particularly strong in Colorado with
global players like DISH Network, Liberty Global, Oracle, and Century Link. Colorado is rated
2nd for its high‐tech business (TechAmerica 2012).
The Institute for International Business is recognized for its leadership in entrepreneurship. It
recently developed a case study on entrepreneurship in China, translated 40 cases from Chinese
to English for US MBA students, developed and hosted four faculty programs in international
entrepreneurship, edited a PACIBER consortium international entrepreneurship casebook, co‐
sponsored a Glasgow conference on Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and is editing a
special journal issue on global entrepreneurship. The University of Colorado Denver Business
School’s Bard Center for Entrepreneurship ranks 3rd as a regional program of excellence
(Entrepreneurship Magazine) and serves as an incubator for new businesses.
Biosciences and Health Care Management
Colorado is home to a thriving bioscience industry consisting of biotechnology, medical devices,
agricultural‐bioscience, diagnostics, and pharmaceuticals. Over 600 Colorado bioscience
companies employ 20,000 people with an annual $7 billion payroll. With more than 253,000
health and wellness workers across the state and an $11.3 billion annual payroll, the health and
wellness industry has a compelling economic impact within Colorado. The Anschutz Medical
Campus is the largest medical‐related redevelopment in the US and the world’s only completely
new research, education, and patient care complex.
Mining
Colorado’s mining industry is a modern, innovative, safe, and environmentally responsible one
that directly employs 5000 workers and ranks 6th in mineral royalty receipts. The following
minerals are mined: coal, gold, gypsum, marble, limestone, molybdenum, silver, soda ash,
sodium bicarbonate, titanium, and uranium. A thriving aggregates industry also exists for sand,
gravel, and crushed stone. Federal resources in Colorado include various offices of the US Forest
Service and the Bureau of Land Management, the Environmental Protection Office, and the
Western Regional Office of Surface Mining. Colorado resources include the Colorado Mining
Association, the Colorado School of Mines, the Colorado Geological Survey, and the Colorado
Division of Reclamation and Mining Safety. The University of Colorado Denver Business School’s
J.P. Morgan Center for Commodities, the first of its kind, provides comprehensive research and
education in commodities such as energy, minerals, and agriculture.
Energy
Colorado has a diverse mix of energy resources including natural gas, oil, coal, biofuels, solar,
and wind. Federal resources in Colorado include the US Department of Energy Golden Field
Office and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Colorado resources include the Colorado
Renewable Energy Collaboratory, the Colorado Energy Research Institute, the Colorado Fuel
Cell Center, and the Governor’s Energy Office.
Traditional
Colorado is a top US producer of oil, natural gas, and low sulfur coal, with more than 60% of
the state’s electricity generated by coal.
Green
Colorado is rated in the top 5 states for clean energy leadership and among the top 10 for
wind energy production and potential (Clean Edge 2012). By 2020, Colorado utilities must,
by law, obtain 30% of their electricity from renewable energy resources, with 4% coming
from solar energy.
Sustainability
Colorado is rated as the 5th most sustainable state (Green Guide 2011). The quality of its
drinking water is excellent, with 99% of its systems in full compliance with all federal drinking
water standards. Its agriculture and food industries generate more than $5 billion annually with
exports to 100 countries. Federal resources in Colorado include the National Institute of
Standards and Technology, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and the National
Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.
Tourism
Colorado’s outdoors is a large part of the lifestyle of the state and also a significant economic
driver which includes $10 billion in annual income and 107,000 jobs (Outdoor Industry
Association Report). Colorado is particularly known for its skiing and snowboarding (26
resorts), hiking, camping, and rafting. It also excels in scenic tours, snowmobiling, zip lining,
boating, dog sledding, golfing, archaeological digs, rodeos, performing arts, and professional
sports (baseball, basketball, football, hockey, lacrosse, and hockey).
