The Baccalaureate Degree Recipient Survey is administered annually by Oakland University

Career Services. The survey is submitted to OU students who earned a bachelor’s degree

between August 2012 and May 2013. Results were collected through December 2013 providing

a snapshot of our graduates during their transition beyond college.

Data Collection

Career Services coordinates data collection through a formal survey that encourages soon to be

graduates to stay connected to OU and informs them about transitional trends and outcomes

upon completion of their bachelor’s degree.

We use a formal online survey and phone calls to yield high response rates. Career Services

hires 3 to 4 college work study students to initiate phone calls and data mining using social

media for those students who fail to respond to the online survey.

Only data deemed

legitimate and verifiable is included in the report.

Student Sample

The survey targeted 2,623 undergraduate students that graduated from August 2012 to May

2013. Our student sample is obtained from the Registrar’s office using the bachelor’s degree

awarded list.

Time Frame

The first attempt at collecting first-destination survey data takes place at the Graduation Fair

scheduled two months prior to graduation in the Fall and Winter semesters. We electronically

send subsequent surveys to non-respondents and those still seeking employment. We conclude

the data collection process six to nine months after their graduation.

Outcome Terms

Based on survey results, outcomes fall into two categories:

1. Placed: Includes students who make a conscious choice of one of the following: employment,

graduate/professional school (admitted to a specific program), completing certification

requirement (teaching), or pursuit of a personal endeavor (extended travel, family

responsibilities, starting a business, etc.)

Executive Summary

The 2012-2013 Baccalaureate Degree Recipients Report shows a favorable job market for the

2013 graduating class. Since students will continue to face fierce competition among peers and

experienced candidates, it will be more important than ever that they be

focused, directed, and

connected

.

Data Summary

:



The overall placement rate for this graduating class is 89%



The overall employment rate is 68% while the number of students attending

graduate or professional school doubled from last year to 18%



97% of the graduates who reported employment location are employed in

Michigan.



The overall response rate of 60% is down 1% compared to 61% last year



92% of graduating students who indicated they were employed secured

employment prior to or within 6 months of graduation



Trend data shows the number of students attending graduate or professional

school rose to 18%, an increase of 9% compared to last year



740 out of 1,573 student respondents indicated the type of work they will be

doing. Of those respondents, 86% reported their work was either related or

somewhat related to their career plans

Data from 1,573 of 2,623 graduating students receiving a baccalaureate degree was collected between August 2012 and May 2013 resulting in a total response rate of 60%. Table 1 shows the response rate by school. Table 2 shows their career by outcomes to date.

A total of 698 students reported their employment location. Among those, 677 (97%) reported

employment in Michigan, 20 (3%) were employed outside of Michigan, and 1 out of the country. Table 7 shows the overall geographic distribution by academic unit.
