Scope and Content Note

This collection (cataloged on Bib #717159) is comprised of documents generated by State Normal School/State Teachers College (SNS/STC), now Jacksonville State University, President Clarence William (C.W.) Daugette (1873-1942). These documents include personal correspondence and documentation, as well as correspondence, reports, financial documentation, and other paperwork official to the State Normal School/State Teachers College, issued by Dr. Daugette through his office as president.

Daugette was born at Bell’s Landing in Monroe County, Alabama in 1873, and he attended Monroeville Academy before going on to college at the Agricultural & Mechanical College of Alabama (now Auburn University). He earned a Bachelor of Science in 1893 and a Master of Science in 1894. It was in this year that he began teaching science at the State Normal School in Jacksonville, Alabama. In 1897 he married Annie Rowan Forney, daughter of Confederate Lt. General John H. Forney and sister of the State Normal School’s president, Jacob Forney. When Forney resigned in 1899, Daugette succeeded him as president. Daugette continued his education, attending the University of Chicago in 1901 and 1903 to study law and receiving an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Alabama. In addition to his role as State Normal School/State Teachers College president, Daugette was vice-president of the First National Bank of Jacksonville, a Mason, a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Woodmen of the World, and junior warden at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Jacksonville. He was also active in the Democratic party; his personal correspondence contains exchanges with Congressman Lamar Jeffers (Democratic House Representative, 1921-1934) and Alabama Governor Bibb Graves (gubernatorial tenure 1927-1931, 1935-1939), amongst many other local and state politicians. Daugette had five children: Kathleen Forney Daugette, Palmer Daugette, Clarence William Daugette, Jr., Rutledge Forney

With the exception of the student records, which have been removed to the University Registrar’s Office, this collection is open to researchers under the guidelines set out in the Houston Cole Library Policy and Procedures Manual, Alabama Gallery section. Please consult the policy for specific instructions.

Provenance

This collection originated with Dr. Daugette’s office as President of the State Normal School/State Teachers College. No documentation is extant for its deposit with the university. Some, perhaps all, of the items were moved to the Library from their original location in the attic of Bibb Graves Hall in the 1980s. Circa 2006, some correspondence/items were separated out, assigned subject headings, arranged by those headings in manila folders, and filed alphabetically in non-archival boxes. Therefore, nothing is known about the original order of these materials. The remaining materials were left in a Library storage room in their original condition: nine wooden and cardboard “book file” boxes, Dr. Daugette’s original filing system. The material in these boxes (primarily correspondence) was arranged chronologically, with carbons/copies of replies straight-pinned or paper-clipped to the original

It is unknown if any of the items arranged by subject heading were originally housed in other volumes or if there were/are further enumerated volumes. 1920, 1923-24, and 1931-32 are missing from

enumerated correspondence; very few items are included for 1936-1942. It is probable that further volumes for all these years existed. Volume V (Treasurer’s Office Help File) contained primarily blank letterhead and multiple copies of (blank, unused) form letters requesting payment for delinquent accounts. These materials have not been retained.

Physical Condition

These items were stored for an unknown period of time in a space which is not climate-controlled and experiences water intrusion. Dr. Daugette’s original filing boxes were crumbling, flaking, and in pieces; some showed evidence of water damage. The majority of the materials found inside the filing boxes are in good condition with easy readability, but some are torn, wrinkled, or rust damaged due to metal straight-pins and paper clips. A small percentage of the materials were mold damaged and have been removed from the collection and replaced with photocopies.
