HONOR LEARNING COMMUNITY PLAN FOR 2015-16

Learning Outcomes:

 Identify a community of peers, staff, faculty, and advisors that can support their success with their Honors Program Requirements

 Engage purposefully in experiences related to the 5 G.O.A.L.S. areas

 Increase their sense of community and belonging to the University Honors Program and Ohio State at large

 Distinguish effective study skill strategies and habits that are sustainable in a university setting

 Examine the relationship between their academics, co-curricular involvement and future aspirations (2nd year)

 Explore how to get connected to appropriate job experiences that can assist with career preparation (2nd year)

 Formulate a transition plan for moving off campus living and Junior and Senior Year coursework. (2nd year)

Staffing:

HONORS STAFF LIAISON is expected to meet with their assigned residence hall staff on a regular basis (defined as bi-weekly depending on the time of year). The assignments are as following:

o Taylor Tower (Caleb Lesley): Jen Shields-McLeod, Program Coordinator

o Bradley Hall (Jonathan Adams): Gary Fleisner, GAA

o Lincoln Tower (Katie Wagner ): Elizabeth Paice, GAA

 We will gather on a monthly basis (Honors staff and Honors HD/AHD staff). These meetings will be held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 1pm. Dates are as follows:

September 9, 2015; October 7, 2015; November 4, 2015; December 9, 2015; January 13, 2016; February 10, 2016; March 9, 2016; April 13, 2016

NOTE: The meetings BOLDED and underlined indicate the ENTIRE Honors & Housing staff. The other meetings will be working meetings for hall staff only.

IN HALL ACADEMIC ADVISORS: Honors Academic Advisors will be involved in hall initiatives that could include in-hall advising hours, academic programming and planning.

RESIDENTIAL PEER ADVOCATES: This is a newly created student staff position through H&S. These students are honors students living in one of our three honors residence halls and their role is to support students in their honors experience working both directly with students, as well with the RA staff. You can expect the following from them:

o Attend hall council meetings weekly

o Attend all RA staff meetings

o Plan AT LEAST one academic/honors related program each month in collaboration with the RAs

o Serve as an academic resource and support the RAs

o Help to implement the e-Portfolio

Passive Programming Efforts:

HONORS STAFF LIAISON will provide the following:

 Monthly Bulletin Boards in each hall lobby focused on various topics

 Send out Honors Program newsletter for each building

HALL STAFF

o Hall Directors are expected to distribute appropriate number of Honor Program door dec (1 per room/suite) to each RA. The RA’s should have the door decs posted by Wednesday, August 19, 2015.

o Assign RAs to collaborate with honors staff on first 6 week programs

o Hall Directors are expected to assign members of their student desk staff to put up and replace Honors Bulletin boards on a monthly basis. Honors Staff Liaison will send each hall step-by-step directions and supplies needed for each bulletin board. Please see schedule below:

Active Programming Efforts:

The foundation for programming is the G.O.A.L.S. of the University Honors & Scholars Center: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development and Service Engagement. The plan for

programming includes:

AUTUMN SEMESTER 2015:

o Move-in Day In-hall Open House 11am-1pm- HONORS STAFF/HALL STAFF

o Welcome Week Honors Learning Community Kick-offs by building- Sunday, August 23rd , 2pm-3:15pm- HALL STAFF

o H&S Launch - Sunday, August 23th, 4pm-5pm Mershon Auditorium- HONORS STAFF o Sophomore H&S Welcome Back Kuhnival, Monday, August 24th 12-2pm, Kuhn House Lawn—

HONORS STAFF

o First 6 weeks programming (see Addendum for complete schedule)- HONORS STAFF LIAISON

will facilitate 1 program per week with the help of a RA

o After 1st 6 weeks, programming will be focused around themes.

HONORS STAFF LIAISON will implement 1 program every other week (these will rotate between 1st and 2nd year focus)

HALL STAFF should implement at least 1 active and 1 passive activity each month (October and November)

o December study break hosted by HONORS STAFF LIAISON and HALL STAFF

SPRING SEMESTER 2016:

HONORS STAFF LIAISON will facilitate Semester of Service within each of the Honors Halls. A completed description is in the Addendum

HONORS STAFF LIAISON will provide 1 program every other week

HALL STAFF should provide at least 1 active and 1 passive activity per month aligning with one of the G.O.A.L.S (Jan, Feb, March)

HONORS STAFF LIAISON and HALL STAFF will plan a closing event in April

First 6 Weeks Programming Schedule

Each hall will have a consistent programming day for all programs, except the Fall Undergraduate Research Forum. The daily assignments are as follow:
