The construction of institutional facilities presents a unique set of challenges. Meeting completion schedules and staying within budget are critical factors in successfully delivering new and renovated projects to owners. Giffels Westpro’s experience covers a wide range of institutional facilities whether projects are public or private. By providing value engineering services, guaranteed maximum or lump sum pricing, and critical path scheduling, the Giffels Westpro team can ensure project goals are met. A key ingredient to our success has been the facilitation of communication between all project team members, including designers, consultants, subcontractors, and owner representatives throughout the duration of the project.

the quality of our community.
Their team achieved all the formidable
expectations placed upon them by the
Northern Sports Centre. But the real storey
is that beyond their exemplary collaboration
throughout the stages of the planning and
construction of the project, they achieved
and often exceeded our expectations.
Their team managed very well and coordinated a multidisciplined team to design, build
and commission the Trades Centre in 10 months – we congratulate them on a job well done.

involved with most of the work carried out at night during the winter months
on a very busy Highway and in a highly environmentally sensitive area.

MAYORIn our business, planning is paramount. Before we set foot on site, we review every aspect of what we are going to do, and exactly how we are going to do it – to eliminate the obstacles that might hinder a project from reaching its objectives. We also maintain that superior communication at all levels is the key to a successful project. Productivity can only be maximized when all parties are exchanging
information and ideas in an efficient and effective manner. We work closely with owners, architects and the other members of the planning team well before ground is broken, providing cost analysis, scheduling information, and value engineering services to ensure that our client can make informed and qualitative business decisions. We meet with the entire project team every week, to review project
milestones, as well as safety, quality and financial performance. In specific circumstances Giffels Westpro has the ability to self-perform the work of key civil trades. This allows us to ensure higher quality, greater schedule control, and cost savings to the client. In western Canada we maintain our own fabrication shop which gives us further control over our projects. For each project, we evaluate our clients’

needs, bring on key subcontractors as necessary, and manage project teams to provide the best possible results. Combined with our dedicated, hands-on management style, this gives us the capability of handling large, sophisticated projects as well as the smaller and challenging ones. It also gives us the ability to be more nimble, more responsive and more focused on our clients’ needs at every step. We maintain
that continuous improvement is essential. Each year, we invest in the development of our administrative systems and management processes to better deliver what matters most to our clients: quality-assured results, on-time completions, risk mitigation and relentless attention to project detail.
Adding Value
Our ability to influence the ultimate success of a project is directly related to the point in the project cycle at which we become involved. Early participation allows Giffels Westpro to apply its construction expertise as a full member of the project team to create the most effective construction solutions. We have a considerable database of cost information to facilitate the rapid evaluation of various design alternatives based on decades of experience and access to a wide network of suppliers, subcontractors and specialty trades. This ability encourages a creative, and collaborative environment during the design development and review process.
We offer general contracting, design-build and construction management services.
Furthermore, we are fully experienced with lump sum, guaranteed maximum price, cost plus and open book construction management contracting formats.

At Giffels Westpro, we are dedicated to the safety of all of our workers, contractors and trades people on our sites. We believe that maintaining a safe, clean working environment are essential factors in being able to achieve:
• high quality projects • accurate cost control • certainty of delivery
Our company has a reputation for completing building and infrastructure projects of considerable size and complexity. Today, our clients depend on us to quantify their vision and to help realize it. Not only can we visualize what’s possible, we make it happen in a safe and controlled manner, no matter what the unique challenges of a project may be. Giffels Westpro continually conducts internal quality and safety initiatives and planning programs which help us to maintain a high level of oversight and a clear culture of “Safety First.” Our goal is to achieve an accident free workplace through proper planning and strong communication.
Sustainability
The principles of green design emphasize state-of-the-art strategies for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environment quality. A LEED®-designed building fosters this approach by lowering operating and maintenance costs, improving employee productivity, and reducing the negative impact on the environment. The savings accrued in operating a high performance building can offset much of the initial capital cost associated with a LEED®project.
At Giffels Westpro, energy efficient and environmentally friendly design features are now routinely part of the firm’s ongoing construction portfolio. Having constructed the first LEED®Silver certified commercial office building in Toronto, as well as having been involved in the construction of several other LEED®registered facilities such as the certified LEED®Burnaby Youth Justice Services Centre, the LEED®Gold BC Breast Cancer Research Centre, and multiple other LEED®registered facilities, Giffels Westpro is a leader in helping set standards for the industry and a greener planet. Giffels Westpro and our in-house LEED®Accredited Professionals are able to assist clients in their development and construction cycle for LEED®projects.
