Next-generation interactive documents in InDesign CS5.5

Create innovative digital magazines, newspapers, annual reports, manuals, and other documents that incorporate eye-catching elements such as 360° rotation and panoramas, using new Folio Producer tools in InDesign CS5.5 and integration with the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite hosted solution.§ These interactive documents can be played back on a range of tablet devices such as

Apple iPad, BlackBerry PlayBook and a wide variety of Android™ tablets including the Motorola Xoom.

Begin by creating your layout with all the familiar typography, layout, and graphics features in InDesign. Then use Folio Producer tools to add an interactive overlay to your layout, preview the interactive overlay in context in InDesign, and export your layout to the .folio format for uploading to Adobe Digital Publishing Suite.§ To learn more about Adobe Folio Producer, visit www.adobe.com/

products/adobefolioproducer.

Adobe Digital Publishing Suite§ is a turnkey set of hosted services and viewer technology for

professional publishers that tightly integrates with Adobe InDesign CS5.5. For more information about Adobe Digital Publishing Suite,§see www.adobe.com/products/digitalpublishingsuite.

Invite interaction

An interactive overlay is a component of a publication that enables readers to interact with the content. Using the Overlay Creator panel, one of the Folio Producer tools included in InDesign CS5.5, add panoramic views, 360° rotation, scrolling and panning, slide shows, embedded websites, and hyperlinks. Then preview the inter-activity in context using the Content Viewer for Desktop.

Interactive overlays are supported in .folio documents, which you create using the Folio Builder panel, another Folio Producer tool. The .folio format is used by Adobe Digital Publishing Suite,§ a new online service accessible

from within InDesign, which you can use to package your documents for delivery to tablet devices.

Enhanced eBook authoring in InDesign CS5.5

As eBook reading devices grow ever more sophisticated, InDesign lets designers keep pace. Create visually compelling eBooks that take advantage of advanced capabilities in devices such as the Apple iPad, Sony Reader, and Barnes & Noble nook.*

• Transform the eBook reading experience with compelling video and audio—whether it’s a

soundtrack in a children’s book, a virtual-walkthrough video in a travel guide, or contemporary news footage in a history book. In InDesign CS5.5, add video and audio for eBook reader applications that support HTML5 video and audio tags.

• Deliver eBooks with images that resize automatically to look crisp on a wide variety of screens.

Set conversion options for the entire document or individual images when you export to EPUB format. You can also rasterize InDesign shapes, text frames, placed graphics, and groups created in InDesign so that they export as dynamically resizing images.

• Save time and improve consistency by using styles to automate text formatting. Now you can

map paragraph and character styles directly to HTML, EPUB, and PDF tags to help ensure that styles you define in InDesign are correctly exported to the appropriate specifications. Drop caps,

bulleted and numbered lists, and tables are handled automatically, and other text formatting

appears as desired in exported documents. For more advanced workflows, you can add CSS class names and enter your own tags.

In InDesign, you can map styles to HTML, EPUB, or PDF tags in the Export Tagging pane of the Paragraph Style Options and Character Style Options dialog boxes. Though the tags don't affect the appearance of the layout in InDesign (below right, in color), they're mapped to the correct specifications when you export HTML, EPUB, or PDF documents for display in Adobe Digital Editions (below right, in black and white).

To make images resize automatically to fit difference device screens, use the Object Export Options dialog box in InDesign. Select Custom Conversion, and then choose Relative To Page Width from the Size menu. (If you don’t want the image to resize, choose Fixed from the Size menu instead.) The image size automatically adjusts to the page width in different layouts (right), displayed here on two different devices in Adobe Digital Editions— digital reading software from Adobe. Adobe Digital Editions

Adobe Digital Editions software offers an engaging way to view and manage eBooks and other digital publications. Use it to download and purchase digital content, which can be read both online and offline. Transfer copy-protected eBooks from your personal computer to other computers or devices. Organize your eBooks into a custom library and annotate pages. To learn from about Adobe Digital Editions, visit www.adobe.com/ products/digitaleditions.

Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Standard What’s New • Use the new Articles panel to provide a coherent reading experience when you export a complex

layout—for example, a textbook or children’s picture book—that includes a variety of elements such as images, captions, sidebars, and block quotes. Drag layout elements into the Articles panel to define the order in which they’ll export—without rearranging your InDesign layout.

Increased efficiency for delivering more accessible publications

Use enhanced features in InDesign CS5.5 and Acrobat X Pro to help you deliver publications that meet Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 standards and improve accessibility for people with disabilities. In InDesign, apply features such as high-contrast colors and large-type display more easily, and more easily add, edit, and view alt text attributes associated with an image or object. For example, instead of creating new alt text, use alt text added to an image in Adobe Bridge or attached to an object imported from Microsoft Word. Also use the new Object Export Options dialog box to more easily add alt text directly in InDesign. When you've completed the accessible layout in InDesign, export it in PDF format, and then check, adjust, and validate it in Acrobat X Pro.

Powerful new and enhanced features in Acrobat X Pro

Prevail over deadlines with professional PDF workflows using Acrobat X Pro. Automate routine tasks, streamline document reviews, and assemble a variety of file types into a polished PDF Portfolio.

• Quick Tools. Quickly access the tools you use most often—from your favorite PDF document-editing tools to your most frequently used comment and markup tools—by adding them to the Quick Tools area.

• Optimized viewing mode. Maximize your screen for optimal reading and presentation of PDF files with the new Reading Mode. Menus and panels disappear and a transparent floating toolbar appears to help you navigate PDF files more easily.

• Improved web experience. Open and view online PDF documents from within websites with a streamlined loading and viewing experience.

Photoshop CS5 built to run on 64-bit operating systems Photoshop CS5 is 64-bit native, which means even faster image edit-ing on Mac OS and Windows. (Design Standard can also install a 32-bit version of Photoshop, if you do not have a 64-bit system.)

Drag content from your InDesign layout (right)— including images, threaded text, or separate text blocks such as captions and block quotes—into the Articles panel (above). Then drag them so that they appear in a logical reading sequence when exported.

Alternate (alt) text is a brief description of a photograph or illustration that can be read by screen readers used by people with disabilities. Add alt text directly in InDesign (above), or use alt text added to placed images and objects.

Extend your desktop workflow A recent update to Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Photoshop CS5 Extended software opens the door for communication via wifi between this industry-leading digital imaging software and apps on popular device platforms like Android, BlackBerry, and iOS.** To learn more about the first apps to take advantage of this new connectivity, visit www. photoshop.com/products/mobile.

** Photoshop CS5 or Photoshop CS5 Extended (version 12.0.4 or later) and wire-less Internet connection required. Mobile and tablet applications require a separate download and agreement to additional terms. Such applications may not be avail-able in all countries or languages and may be subject to change or discontinuation without notice. Additional fees or subscrip-tion charges may apply.

• PDF Portfolio customization. Easily customize PDF Portfolios with included layouts, visual

themes, and color palettes. Add corporate logos and colors to reflect your branding. Import

custom PDF Portfolio layouts and themes developed by third-party designers and developers.

• Action Wizard. Automate routine, multistep tasks using the new Action Wizard to more easily create, manage, execute, and share Actions. An Action is a sequence of steps that can be applied to a single PDF or to batches of files.

In the Acrobat Tools pane (below), the Action Wizard enables you to create new Actions and edit existing Actions. The Edit Action dialog box (right) allows you to drag steps into an Action, or sequence, that you can apply repeatedly in order to save time.

Impress a client or prospect with an easy-to-create, customized PDF Portfolio. Brand new in Acrobat X Pro, visual themes provide many options for quickly changing the look and feel of a PDF Portfolio—without custom coding or writing scripts. You can also create custom visual themes using Adobe Creative Suite applications such as Illustrator, and easily share your visual themes with others.

Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Standard What’s New

Still using Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Standard?

If you’re considering upgrading to CS5.5 Design Standard, remember that you’ll benefit from all the new features described above, as well as all the features introduced in CS5 Design Standard. They include features for:

Exploring new creative realms

• Realistic painting effects with Photoshop. New tools enable you to paint in much the same way you would using real-world brushes and paints. With a new Mixer Brush tool, new bristle qualities, and new ways to blend colors, Photoshop offers virtually endless possibilities for creating outstanding expressive effects, from enhancing photographic images in unusual ways to painting directly on a blank canvas.

• Puppet Warp in Photoshop. Precisely warp or stretch graphics, text, or image elements to create unique new looks for your designs, or to make an image more appealing or fit a specific layout. Simply establish anchor points where you want image parts not to move, and handles that you can use for warping. Then drag any of the handles to reposition the picture elements. After you reposition an object, Photoshop adjusts the rest of the image to account for the shifted pixels.

• Fluid vector painting with Illustrator. Enjoy the editability and flexibility of vectors along with the experience and expressiveness of painting in natural media. Paint freely with the vector-based Bristle Brush to produce lifelike brush strokes. Each brush stroke creates a path that can be edited just as easily as if it had been created with the Pen or Pencil tool in Illustrator. A preview window shows you how the Bristle Brush and its brush stroke will look.

Expressing your ideas faster

• Truer Edge selection technology in Photoshop. Take advantage of a faster way to extract subjects from their backgrounds and create realistic composites. New intelligent selection

technology offers better edge detection and faster, more accurate masking for complex subjects,

such as hair. Automatic color decontamination helps you eliminate background color around the edges of a selection, resulting in more seamless compositions when placing extracted subjects on new backgrounds.

• Content-Aware Fill in Photoshop. Remove any image detail or object and watch as Content-Aware Fill magically fills in the space left behind. This breakthrough technology matches lighting, tone, and noise so it looks as if the removed content never existed.

• Beautiful strokes with Illustrator. Whether you’re designing a complex infographic or a simple icon, finessing the details of strokes is an essential task. Illustrator includes several powerful features that make working with strokes more precise and flexible, including variable-width strokes, precise arrowheads, dashed-line controls, stretch controls for brushes, and brushes with corner controls.

• Perspective drawing in Illustrator. Use perspective grids to draw shapes and scenes in accurate 1-, 2-, and 3-point linear perspectives. The Perspective Grid tool enables you to turn on a grid that supports drawing directly on planes of true perspective. The Perspective Selection tool allows objects to be moved, scaled, duplicated, and transformed dynamically in perspective.

• Simplified object selection and editing in InDesign. Whether you’re designing a document that will be printed, viewed onscreen, or both, everything from aligning and distributing space between objects to adjusting corner effects is faster and easier in InDesign. Perform multiple transformations with a single tool, adjust the white space between objects, create corner effects directly on a frame, and create grids by simply pressing arrow keys to add columns and rows.

• Multiple page sizes in a single InDesign document. Streamline design and production of projects with multiple page sizes by including different page sizes in a single InDesign document. Use the Page Selection tool to select and resize individual pages, applying resizing options in the Control panel. Easily share design assets by applying the same master page to different-sized layouts while controlling the placement of master elements in each individual layout.

(7)

• Paragraphs that span or split columns in InDesign. Quickly format headlines, subheads, or any

text to span multiple columns in a single text frame. Apply settings to a paragraph, specifying

whether the text should span some or all columns, or split columns, so that InDesign automati-cally reflows what was one column into two or more columns.

• Convenient visual browsing and asset handling with Adobe Mini Bridge. Take advantage of a customizable panel in Photoshop and InDesign to sort, filter, and drag files directly into your artwork or layout without ever leaving your design software.

• Faster performance across platforms with Photoshop. Speed up day-to-day imaging tasks and process very large images up to 10 times faster by taking advantage of cross-platform 64-bit support. (Requires a 64-bit-capable computer with a 64-bit version of Mac OS, Microsoft® Windows® 7, or Windows Vista®. Actual performance varies depending on the amount of RAM, driver types, and other factors.)

Maximizing your design time by streamlining critical non-design tasks

• Accelerated reviews through integration with Adobe CS Review. Enjoy faster, more efficient creative reviews with CS Review, an Adobe CS Live online service†‡ that integrates with compo-nents of CS5.5 Design Standard. Initiate shared reviews with just a few clicks from within Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign—simply click Access CS Live in the Application bar to open the CS Review panel. Then create a new review, add your layout or artwork, and invite colleagues or clients to view it online. They receive an email invitation with a link—one click and they see the document displayed in their web browser.

Creating dynamic onscreen reading experiences

• Dynamic digital documents with InDesign. Add attention-grabbing interactivity, animation,

video, and sound to digital documents and presentations in your familiar design software. InDesign CS5.5 includes support for FLV video and MP3 audio files, as well as dozens of motion presets that make it easy to create animations. Export a document or presentation from InDesign to SWF format for playback in Adobe Flash® Player or a web browser. Or export a document as an interactive PDF file, complete with video and sound. Five panels introduced in InDesign CS5 provide intuitive controls that enable you to create a wealth of dazzling effects.

Still using Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Standard?

If you’re considering upgrading to CS5.5 Design Standard, remember that you’ll benefit from all the new features described above, as well as all the new features introduced in CS4 Design Standard. They include:

• Content-Aware Scaling in Photoshop. Automatically recompose an image as you resize it, smartly preserving vital areas as the image adapts to the new dimensions. Get the perfect image in one step without time-intensive cropping and retouching.

• Smoother panning and zooming and fluid canvas rotation in Photoshop. Navigate gracefully to any area of an image with new, ultra-smooth zooming and panning. Just click to smoothly turn your canvas for distortion-free viewing at any angle—no more tilting your head while painting and drawing.

• Multiple artboards in Illustrator. Create files containing up to 100 artboards of varying sizes, and display them any way you want—overlapping, side by side, or stacked. Save, export, and print artboards independently or together. Save a selected range or all artboards as a multipage PDF file.

• Blob Brush tool in Illustrator. Sketch with a brush that generates a single clean vector shape, even when strokes overlap. Draw naturally, using the Blob Brush tool together with the Eraser and Smooth tools.

• Gradients exposed. Interact with gradients right on your object; set gradient angle, position, and elliptical dimensions; and add and edit colors using sliders—all with immediate feedback where you work.
