Mission Statement

WE ARE…

A volunteer-based student organization

dedicated to the philosophy and proposition that tango is not a commodity but rather an art form to

be shared freely. It shall be cultivated in a community of Club participants, which fosters leadership and operates with a firm appreciation of the various talents, abilities, and motivations of

those who give that community form.

As it Reads Now:

VIII. Amendments to the Constitution

Any Club Member may submit to the Board an amendment to the Constitution. If this amendment is sponsored by three (3) Board Members, this amendment shall be publicly discussed (and only discussed) at the first General Membership Meeting following the request. Then a ratification vote shall be sought during the second General Membership Meeting following the amendment request.

Amendments shall be ratified on the second General Membership Meeting following the request. A majority vote of two-thirds (2/3) of the Club Members present at the General Membership Meeting shall be required to ratify an amendment to the Constitution.

Ambiguities and Other Concerns:

1) Does not explicitly state that all amendments need to be sponsored by Board members nor that they have to be discussed at a GMM

2) Only the requirement of a 2/3 majority for ratification does not safeguard

against the possibility of a small number of people changing the constitution.

E.g. MSA registration requirement for a SO: at least 10 students Quorum for a GMM: 20% of the total membership(10) = 2

Number of votes to ratify amendments: 2/3 of the attendees = 2

VIII. Amendments to the Constitution

Any Club Member may submit to the Board an amendment to the Constitution.  Before it can be ratified, any proposed change to the constitution must have 1) gained the

sponsorship of at least three (3) Board Members, and 2) been presented to and discussed with Club Membership at a General Membership Meeting. Ratification of any proposed change shall occur during a subsequent General Membership Meeting and in the same calendar year as the initial proposal.

To be ratified, a proposed Constitutional amendment must be passed by a minimum of twenty-five (25) votes or a majority of two-thirds (2/3) of the Club Members present at the General Membership Meeting, whichever is greater.

(10)

As it Reads Now:

V.1-e Limitations

No Officer shall serve on the Board longer than two (2) consecutive years, irrespectively of the position they may have held on the Board.

Reasons for amending:

1) As a student club conscious of the high turn-over inherent to a university, MATC is committed to offering leadership opportunities to as many people as possible

2) As a VSO MATC recognizes the contributions, time, and effort of it’s constituents and is committed not to place undue burden on any member

3) Promote influx of new ideas

4) Prevent stagnation in leadership

5) To ensure perpetuation of the club by identifying and encouraging new members to take up leadership positions and to avoid dependence on a few members

As it Reads Now:

V.1-e Limitations

V.1-e Limitations

which the term was served, shall be considered a “partial term.” Otherwise, the term shall be considered “full.”

Effect: It would be impossible for any person to serve on the Board for more than two (2) years and nine (9) months.

New Pricing Structure Explained

Purpose: To correct a previously passed scheme which didn’t take into account some of the costs associated with the club, and to accommodate increased operational costs.

The Situation:

 Budget: 24 K

 Revenue: 17 K

 Difference: 7K

(15)

Pricing Structure Continued:

What it Will Do…

 Take effect May of this year

 By December we should have 20K (instead of 17K)

 This leaves us a difference of 4K [24K (budgeted) – 20K (from new pricing structure) = 4K]

 Therefore: BY END OF THIS YEAR: Deficit reduced from 7K to

4K.

(16)

Pricing Structure Continued:

What it Will Do…

 Being in place next year it should yield an

additional 3K. This takes the difference to 1K (20K +3K = 23K. 24K-23K = 1K)

 Next year’s budget will be 23K (Based on what costs we think we can cut)

 Therefore: BY END OF NEXT YEAR: Revenue (23K) and Budget (23K) will match.

 To make up residual loss from this past year: Rely on events over time. Note: At this point, it

appears this year’s festival and workshop have

come out ahead.
