3 Welcome to the 2022 performing arts season of the highly-acclaimed Duncan Theatre, “Where Great Dance & Music Live!”

This season marks our 35th year, and we bring you again an array of exciting and inspiring performances covering dance, music, and more through our Modern Dance, Mix Tape, JukeBox and Classical Café series, as well as special events and concerts.

Kicking-off our season is a touring production of Drumline LIVE! based on the films and TV show that celebrates the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) marching band tradition (Jan 12).

Our Modern Dance Series dominates the lineup this season and features contemporary ballet by Parsons Dance (Jan. 14 & 15), a return visit by the incomparable Pilobolus (March 4 & 5) on their BIG FIVE-OH! Anniversary tour, cowboy gaucho percussive dance by Malevo (March 21).

and Martha Graham Dance Company performing the masterwork, Appalachian Spring (March 25 & 26) and more.

This season’s Classical Series held in Stage West features Rolston String Quartet (Jan. 19) and the Omer Quartet (March 23) among many others.

Music lovers won’t want to miss our Mixed Tape Series filled with chart-toppers featuring Belinda Davids: Greatest Love of All tribute to the music of Whitney Houston (Jan 22), the Hillbenders putting a blue grass spin on the music of The Who (Feb. 10), and Shake, Rattle and Roll A Tribute to the King (Elvis Presley) starring Scot Bruce (March 16).

I hope you will come and enjoy all of these shows. Without your support, we would not be able to continue to enrich this community.

The Hillbenders Present:

WhoGrass!

The Hillbenders Present: WhoGrass!

The HillBenders present... WhoGrass

A chronological journey of The Who’s legendary catalog through the wood and wire of bluegrass instrumentation. Framed as a follow-up to The HillBenders 2015 acoustic interpretation of The Who’s TOMMY, WhoGrass now gives audiences a high-energy acoustic twist on the catalog of one of Rock ’n’ Roll’s greatest bands. From the early hits all the way through The Who’s discography, and even a peek into Pete Townshend’s solo career, the rolling banjo, intense dobro percussion, and thunderous vocals have the biggest Who fans pumping their fists and singing along!

“The HillBenders prove to be the perfect group to execute this WhoGrass concept.”

-Rolling Stone The HillBenders

Much like your favorite t-shirt, The HillBenders just feel good. They don’t follow any old stigmas attached to bluegrass which creates a space to be themselves musically. For over ten years now the five original members have traveled coast to coast and around the world spreading joy and excitement through music. The HillBenders celebrated this decade- long milestone with a new original record (Nov. 2018) and “Pettygrass”- a collaboration with jamband veteran Keller Williams to give the music of Tom Petty a bluegrass twist.

This comes as a follow-up to the critically-acclaimed 2015 release of their 3rd album, TOMMY: A Bluegrass Opry, an acoustic interpretation of the The Who’s legendary rock opera, TOMMY. From the deepest roots in bluegrass as the National Single Microphone Champions to the far left of progressive acoustic music The HillBenders have played the most elite stages in both the festival circuit and the performing arts world. High-energy performances, a diverse catalog, and a slice of humor make way for what appears to be more of a brotherhood than a business - and each audience they play for becomes a part of that family.

“As I finished a new song in my studio, I was hoping to cool down by listening to [The HillBenders’] new record. But it has had the opposite effect, I am surrounded by the angels and excited as hell. I really like all of it. The recording is very special... Clean, dry, and intimate. It should win a f---cking Grammy, it’s that good!”

-Pete Townshend

“After catching the spotlight’s eye with Tommy, [The HillBenders] were determined to stir its ardor with their originals, and overwhelmingly succeeded. The whole album is well written and performed with hardly a blemish or toss-away…”

-No Depression

“If The Hillbenders proves anything, it’s the fact that its namesake combo clearly has the credence and conviction needed to carry them to the top ranks of today’s progressive bluegrass pantheon.”
