When documents get wet
What happens when documents get wet? Deterioration begins as moisture is absorbed into the paper. Swelling, adhesion, distortion, a n d d i s c o l o u r a t i o n c a n m a ke t h e i t e m u n u s a b l e u n l e s s t h ey a re c o r r e c t l y p ro c e s s e d . M o i s t o r w e t p a p e r p rov i d e s a n i d e a l environment for the growth of bacteria and mould. Some indications of these contaminants are odour or discolouration.
Water damaged files can be restored. Our new generation of vacuum freeze dryers, and thermal vacuum freeze dryers are specifically designed for books, documents and paper materials. Often, by using these processes, no further restoration is required after drying is completed.
Our technicians successfully restore a wide range of materials and delicate paper items from single documents to entire libraries and water damaged collections. Thanks to BELFOR’s technical processes it is difficult to distinguish the difference between a restored file and an undamaged file.

Mould, mildew or bacteria attack paper materials
Paper itself is a food source. Mould, mildew, book lice, and other organisms thrive on paper. Often the contamination is far worse than it appears as the microorganism spreads through the matrix of the cellulose.

Smoke and fire damaged books and papers are r e s t o r a b l e . O u r s t a t e o f t h e a r t c l e a n i n g p ro c e s s e s i n c l u d e i o n i s e d a i r w a s h i n g a n d deodorisation and de-acidification restores the chemical balance. Trimming or reprocessing may be required if permanent damage has occurred.
Any adhered soot particles must be removed to p r e ve n t t h e s p r e a d o f c o n t a m i n a t e s a n d t o e l i m i n a t e t h e o d o u r. W h e n w a t e r i s u s e d t o extinguish the fire, bacteria and mould can grow a n d a n t i m i c ro b i a l t r e a t m e n t s m a y a l s o b e necessary.

Bringing restoration to you
Your documents have the greatest chance of survival if treated as soon as possible. Deterioration is stopped quickly and restoration w i l l b e m o r e s u c c e s s f u l . E a r l y a s s e s s m e n t a n d a p p ro p r i a t e reclamation protocols are BELFOR trademarks.
To p rov i d e yo u w i t h s u p p o r t a s q u i c k l y a s p o s s i b l e fo l l ow i n g a n incident, we can set up mobile restoration facilities and refrigerated storage if necessary. By doing this we are able to apply our methods directly on site. However, in most instances your documents are safely packed, itemised and transported to our Centre of Excellence for Document Recovery in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, where they can be stored in our secure refrigerated unit.
