March 2014

Does it seem silly to anyone other than myself that when the Sailing Season has come to an end, and the days have gotten shorter, the weather is colder, and the lake has dropped we hold the “Commodore’s Gala?” Gala means a festive celebration; a public entertainment mark-ing a special occasion. If you love sailmark-ing, love being around sailing, or just love being near the water isn’t our upcoming Commissioning Party & Rocky Top Regatta (April 26th & 27th) our true ga-la – Commodore or no Commodore? Warm days, spring winds, the raising of the lake, and the Club buzzing with activity is what I consider truly worthy of a celebration.

Well that celebration is only 37 days and counting! We still need to ready the facilities with only two (2) spring work parties left: Satur-day’s - March 22nd, and 29th. Rear Commodore, Richard Love and his crew of workers have ac-complished so much but there are many projects still needing to be tackled. Please make an all-out effort to attend at least one of the work par-ties where you’ll not only contribute to the Club

club looks due to your personal efforts.

Once the facilities are ship shape the work doesn’t stop because we need to man the social events, participate in race committee duty, chair committees, and volunteer where needed to make sure all the programs we offer to “the next generation of sailors” run smoothly and efficient-ly such as Sail Camp, High School Sailing, and UT Collegiate Sailing. We also need members to stop thinking in terms of “them” and “us” be-cause there is only “us.” “Us” is anyone of any age that loves the sport of sailing. You can label it CYC, CSC, UT Sailing, racer, cruiser, or Adult Learn-to-Sail, etc., but it all boils down to one label…sailors who aspire to be good servants to the sport of sailing.

I encourage all of you to change your CYC per-spective from “what’s in it for me” to “what can I contribute?” I challenge you to be good servants to the sport we all love and share - Sailing. If you do, you will be amazed at the difference it will make in our club and the sport of sailing in East Tennessee.

Although much was accomplished during

the year’s first work party held on March

9th, there is still much to be done to get

CYC in ship shape and Bristol condition.

Please participate in one of the upcoming

work parties on March 22nd, and 29th.

We need your help!

ADOPT A PROJECT

I need someone to provide periodic

maintenance of Smith's Shed and the

Clubhouse store rooms. We nearly lost

our Occupancy Permit from the Knox

County Fire Inspector because we had

combustible material stored against the gas

furnaces. Person who accepts this task will

have their work hours completed by

check-ing the area every month. We have a lot of

different activities at the Club and we need

to keep these areas cleared of

combusti-bles. That is one of the drivers of marking

more storage in bathhouse.

It's our Club and it's time to get it ready for

the sailing season.

“Do not hesitate to volunteer your assistance on any additional projects or jobs around

the club. The joint effort and cooperation of everyone is essential to the successful

operation of our club. Do your part.”

CYC Handbook - Section D - Page 2

If you are a member who chose to use the payment option for Club Dues, the

next payment must be post marked or received by Monday, March 31, 2013.

Avoid unnecessary late fees by making your payment on time.

In this edition of the Luff Letter are the 2014 CYC Racing Calendar and Race Committee (RC) assign-ments (Page 4). In addition to being published here, the RC assignments will also be published in the 2014 Handbook and on the CYC website (under the Racing Tab).

Summer Races

The races scheduled between the July 4th and La-bor Day Regattas are different this year than in previous years. There will be races every Sunday during this period which will alternate between the Dinghy and the Keelboat fleet. There will not be Wednesday night races during this period.

Race Management Seminar

There will be a race management seminar conduct-ed on April 5, 2012 at 10 am in the bunker. This seminar will be a detailed review of racing at CYC. All club members that serve as PRO or on RC are invited to attend this seminar. All attendees will receive two (2) work hours for attending the semi-nar.

Race Committee Assignments

Serving on RC is a requirement of membership.

Members do not receive work hours for their RC assignments. Work hours will be earned for subse-quent RC service. If you miss an RC assignment, you will be responsible for no-show fees, even if you serve as RC on subsequent dates. Members not planning to serve your RC assignment are asked to contact me so that we may schedule ac-cordingly.

Conflict With Assignment

If you have a conflict with your RC assignment, you may swap with another member. The PRO’s for both dates need to be notified of the change as well as notifying me. Note that PRO’s can only switch with other PRO’s. Document the swap on the back of your work card before the date of the first affected race. Once documented, each mem-ber is responsible for their new date including fees for no-shows.

I want to extend an advanced thank you to each Principal Race Organizer (PRO) and RC member for helping to make this a great year of racing at CYC!

Despite the cold winter, February proved to be a surprisingly good month of sailing. Sundays seemed to be the magic day between cold spells and the low water series sailors took advantage of it. In fact, February 23rd found 8 boats on the starting line! March is

shaping up to be a good month of sailing as well. There are several more weeks in the se-ries, so come on out and get tuned up for the spring season.

The series will continue every Sunday, weath-er pweath-ermitting, through the middle of April.

(6)

It is that time of year again. The weather is be-ginning to warm and the many tasks that have been waiting at CYC are ready to be tackled by our intrepid spring work parties.

One work party has already taken place. On Saturday, March 9th a gaggle of CYC members tackled a number of clean up tasks in and around the club. Some of the activities included cleaning up the fence line along Northshore; cleanup around the clubhouse and grounds; burning debris; priming the new siding on the Marine Railway and Boat Lift Storage Building; converting the center room of the Bathhouse to

a storage area; repairing the breezeway fans and balancing blades; cleaning the walls and corners of the clubhouse interior; general or-ganizing of Smith’s Shed; and much more. Did everything that needed to get done get done? Certainly not! While a lot was accomplished, the To Do List is still long.

So, dust off your tools, find your work gloves and make plans to attend one of the upcoming work parties...currently scheduled for Saturday, March 15th, 22nd, and 29th. All hands on deck!!

Ship 300’s sixteen (16) Sea Scouts sailed every week in the month of February! Ask youth you know, “What did you do last weekend?” If they are a Sea Scout, he or she will say, “We went sailing.” Member-ship in Sea Scouts is open to boys And girls, ages 13 & 8th grade to age 21. Ship 300 needs more youth to complement crews for its fleet.

There are just four achievable ranks in Sea Scout advancement that many achieve by just putting their mind to them, a little bit several times each week. When complet-ed, the achievement can lead to advanced entry into the Coast Guard as an E-2 or E-3, qualify for college scholarships, and for those interested, introduction to maritime related careers.

Pictured above is Boatswain’s Mate Ap-prentice Sea Scout Justin Douthat at the helm of Nan, his Pearson 26 with crew (L to Rt) Liam Decker, Anthony Appleba, and in back of Justin looking over the stern is his cousin from the Townsend area, Logan Heil.

Above: Liam Decker, lovin’ it while taking his first sail on February 9th. A member of troop 246, Liam will have a dual member-ship upon joining Sea Scout Ship 300.

Ship's Boatswain, Apprentice Sea Scout John Walker is coaching rowing to Liam Decker March 2nd. Boatswain is the high-est ranking youth officer.

Ship 300 welcomes adults interested in becom-ing volunteer leaders, too. Anyone interested in joining Sea Scouts should contact:

George Hubbell

The CYC library has a wide selection of books and CDs in the areas of navigation & piloting, seamanship, racing, cruising, equipment & maintenance, history/adventure and introducto-ry sailing. New selections are being added regu-larly. If you have any book requests or sugges-tions, please contact Steve Litherland.

Copies of the current and past Practical Sailor magazines are available in a 3-ring binder to the left of the fireplace. They are on the open shelv-ing and are available to read 24/7. Original is-sues are only available during library hours. The March issue features – Favorite Bottom Paints by Region, Wind Sensor Testing, Some Propane Dos and Don’ts, and Boat Review: Jackett Packet.

Call yourself a sailor? Josh-ua Slocum’s “Sailing Alone

Around the World” is one of those mandatory reads. At age 62, the author is the first person to singlehandedly sail around the world. Written in a laid back, matter of fact style his story will make you chuckle and appreciate the art and hazards of sailing in the late 1800s. It’s in the CYC Library. Check it out

Interested in volunteering for library duty? Earn one work hour for each library duty worked. Slots are available every Sunday starting April 6th and every Sunday thereafter.
