Abstract

The Students’ Association is the primary organization representing the interests, needs and concerns of students on campus. This collection is composed of administration records, minutes and agendas of the

association and associated committees including the Board of Control, financial records and subject files. Folders may include constitutions, by-laws, correspondence, clippings, and reports.

Historical Note

The Students’ Association has existed on campus since the early 1900s. The governing board of the Students’ Association was the Board of Control. The board was elected by the student body each spring and consisted of students from each division of the university with the Dean of Men and the Dean of Women as advisers. The president and vice president of the student’s association presided over the board with the president acting as chairman. The Board of Control spent their time solving campus problems, sponsoring free movies, planning all-campus concerts, sponsoring the beauty pageant, Women’s Day and Leadership Camp, and filibustering about the Publication Council’s

reserve fund. Members allocated funds from student fees to individual student enterprises; voted on student activities; and controlled the Students’

Association-owned bookstore. Their vote was the final decision on major student positions. The board also regulated the actions of the various special councils. Nomination of candidates for student president and vice-president formed one of the most important duties of the Board of Control.

The purpose of the organization was to promote and regulate student affairs in the best interests of the college, and to form a connecting link between the student body and the faculty.

The Students’ Association is the primary organization representing the interests, needs and concerns of students on campus. The Students’ Association includes every registered student at SDSU but the work of the Association functions through an elected Student Senate, which is responsible for three major

program areas. First, the Senate provides input to the administration, Academic Senate, a wide variety of committees, the South Dakota Board of Regents and the South Dakota Legislature regarding student concerns. Students are

during development and implementation. Second, SA provides support services and programs to assist students. Those services run the gamut from providing funding for the SA lawyer who offers legal advice to students to sponsorship of campus-wide educational programs. Finally, SA has the budgetary responsibility for allocation and supervision of funds provided by student activity fees each year.

Contents Note

This collection is composed of administration records, minutes and agendas of the association and associated committees including the Board of Control, financial records and subject files. Folders may include constitutions, by-laws, correspondence, clippings, and reports.

Series 1. Administrative records. [UA 37.0]

This series is composed of records that deal mainly with issues that the Association handled over the years with the bulk of material covering 1991-1995. Included are constitutions, by-laws, correspondence,

clippings, reports, and miscellaneous items used in Students’ Association meetings. Some items of note include a file on Resolution 21 in 1978 and material dealing with the Hobo Day riot in 1991.

Series 2. Agendas and minutes. [UA 37.1]

This series is composed of agendas and minutes from Students’

Association meetings. Also included are correspondence, clippings, and other material related to meeting topics.

This series is composed of minutes from the meetings of the Board of Control. The meetings dealt with everything from parking problems on campus to beauty pageants to electing the editor and manager for the Collegian and the Jackrabbit. The earlier minutes include some financial reports from councils under the jurisdiction of the Board of Control. Beginning with the 1955 minutes there is a notation in the margin of the minutes that serves as a reference tool to the information in the minutes. The minutes also note the absence of members from meetings.

Series 4. Associated Committees records. [UA 37.3]

This series is composed of minutes, agendas, correspondence, clippings and miscellaneous material collected by individual committees associated with the Students’ Association. The bulk of the material deals with student activities, food service, academic advising, athletics, and campus radio. Some of the material in this series may duplicate material found in the Academic Senate record group (UA 4).

The Students’ Association is comprised of many committees that perform various functions. While some of the committees are permanent, most

Series 5. Financial records. [UA 37.4]

This series is composed of financial records for the Students’ Association. The scope of the records varies from year to year, but they consist mainly of allocation and budget requests made by organizations and departments on campus for student fee funds. Minutes and agendas for the University Activity Fee and Budget Committee [UAFBC], a sub-committee of the Students’ Association, are included here because of the direct association this committee has in approving funds for organizations and departments. Also included are accounting reports, internal audit material, some

specialized files on the Department of Student Activities, and miscellaneous files. The miscellaneous files consist mainly of correspondence and clippings.

Series 6. Subject files. [UA 37.5]

This series is composed of collected material on various subjects relating to or of importance to the Students’ Association. The bulk of the material deals with faculty and students at South Dakota State University and covers many topics. Some items of note are alcohol policies, colleges changing their names to university, higher education, and other state universities.
