Dear Parishioners,

Congratulations to our school and RE second grade students who received the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation for the first time on Wednesday, January 27th at 7:00 . We all prayed together as priests,

parents, and children with music, scripture, homily, and an examination of conscience before the chil-dren went individually to Fr. Pat and myself for their confession. It was different this year (due to COVID) because both the priest and the child wore masks for their confession and we were separated by plexiglass to ensure the safety of all. Despite these changes which sound a little intimidating for a child of seven, the children were at ease and truly felt the love and graces of our Lord in this sacrament of forgiveness. Please keep our second graders in your prayers as they continue to study and prepare for their First Holy Communion this May.

This coming Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday St. Alexander’s eighth grade school, RE, and Polish school children will be receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our young adults have worked very hard, attended an online retreat, and spent countless hours prepar-ing for this sacrament. The norm for the Catholic church calls for a bishop to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation for the faithful. Due to COVID regulations pastors of the Archdiocese of Chicago have been delegated by Cardinal Cupich to celebrate the sacrament this year for their parishioners. On Mon-day and TuesMon-day I will be the main celebrant for our school and RE children and Fr. Chris, the pastor of St. Christopher parish in Midlothian, will be the main celebrant for the Polish school on Wednesday. Please keep our young confirmandi in your prayers and let us hope that they use the gifts of the Holy Spirit as they live their lives.

On February 17th we begin the Lenten Season with the celebration of Ash Wednesday. Our schedule

that day will be 8:30 Mass, 4:30 Prayer Service, and 7:00 Mass. For all three of these services we require and ask that you please register online as you do for Sunday Masses. Registration for Ash Wednesday will begin at 10:00 on Thursday, February 11th. Our school children will receive ashes at

prayers services during the day. In order to ensure the safety of all those receiving ashes during the pandemic, the priest or deacon will have a face mask and shield on and will sprinkle the ashes on each individual without any contact. Please remember that Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation and one chooses to receive ashes as a sign that they will take the Lenten season as an opportunity to pray, fast, and perform works of charity.

God Bless, Father Marty

SCRIPTURE

REFLECTION

Today’s readings begin with a few verses from the book of Job. First, Job complains that his nights drag on endlessly. Then, worse yet, “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; / they come to an end with-out hope” (Job 7:6). Not exactly encouraging, these lamentations, not when taken alone.

Most of us have been there, though, and the antidote is the “good news” that Paul found so compelling that “an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!” (1 Corinthians 9:16). Paul felt driven to announce the gospel to as many people as possible, “to save at least some” (9:22).

This good news is the mystery of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who lifted Simon Pe-ter’s mother-in-law from her sickbed with a mere touch of his hand. “The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons” (Mark 1:33–34)). Our woes and demons are as real as Job’s, and Jesus is our savior.

Please Make Your Gift to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world”

I invite you to spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal materials you should have received in your bulletin or in the mail. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection: It is a pledged commitment to make a gift over time. Your pledge can be made payable in installments.

Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer the call of Jesus to “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world.”

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back. This year, we also encour-age our parishioners to make their Annual Catholic Appeal gifts online at http://annualcatholicappeal.com.

THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO OFFICE OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

As children grow, they have many questions about the world…their own identities…

powers greater than themselves…their relationship with God.

Catholic schools are faith-based communities where belief in God is part of the everyday environment. Our schools have daily prayer, and students regularly attend Mass together. Inspirational words and images are present throughout our schools, as well as frequent reminders of Jesus’ message for all of us.

We know the importance of children experiencing religion firsthand. Their experiences give them a chance to understand the beliefs, purposes, issues and practices of Catholic faith without prejudice or pre-conceived notions. With a firm sense of their values and faith, children can boldly go out in to a world in need of help and make a difference.

Even though Catholic identity and faith formation play a critical role in our Catholic schools, nearly 15 per-cent of children who attend our schools are from non-Catholic families. The parents of these children value the academic excellence of a Catholic school education and the respect shown in our schools for beliefs, val-ues and a higher sense of purpose. Catholic schools educate the whole child – academically, spiritually, physically and emotionally.

February is

Teen Dating

Violence

Awareness

Month

There is a lot you can do as a parent to prevent teen dating violence and abuse. About 1 in 10 teens who have been on a date have also been physically abused by a boyfriend or girlfriend in the last year. One of the most important things you can do is keep the lines of communication open with your kids. Teen Dating Violence is any physical, psychological, or emotional abuse that occurs within dating relationships of young peo-ple ages 12 to 18. This violence usually takes place face-to-face or electronically, such as via phone calls, text messages, or the Internet. Teen dating violence doesn’t always occur between individuals who are currently in a relationship, it can also happen between those who were once in a relationship. It can present itself as physical; emotional; sexual, or stalking.

The effects of teen dating violence can be detri-mental to a person’s physical and emotional well-being and ultimately lead to antisocial behaviors, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and sub-stance abuse. If you or someone you know is suf-fering from dating abuse tell someone, document the abuse, and leave the relationship.
