PREFACE.
The chief feature in the late Mr. Stokes’s Cabinet is his probably unique Collection of nearly all the Medals, Coins, Jettons, &c. in Silver, Copper and Lead, struck in France or elsewhere, from the Convocation of the States General in 1789,—those relating to the actions and reign of the Great Napoleon, together with those of the different Princes and Princesses of the Imperial Family, and of all such pieces as tend to illustrate that eventful period of history.
In addition to their historical interest, value, and rarity, many of these pieces are deserving attention as highly pre¬
served Works of Art. The earlier French Medals (struck between 1789 and 1802) are of indifferent design and execu¬
tion, but under the able direction of Denon and others they gradually improved, and at length attained a high degree of beauty, rivalling thus the beautiful Papal Coins and Medals of the last three centuries. The Collection comprises, like¬
wise, numerous other Coins and Medals down to the present time.
Mr. Stokes, besides his acquisitions at different times of the unedited and best specimens from the rich Collections of the late Monsieur Rollin, Colonel Maurin, and numerous others, purchased some years ago the very choice and com¬
plete Cabinet of Medals collected by the Venerable Arch¬
deacon Burney.
