Visual Arts Showcase
The Darling Range Learning Community Visual Arts Showcase was held last week on Tuesday at Darling Range Sports College. A big thank you to all our students for working so hard to create wonderful works of art. We would have loved to have had everyone’s art on display at the college but there wasn’t enough room for all our art. A snapshot of the student’s art work was chosen from each year group to display on the evening, giving the people attending a snapshot of what we have been working on in visual arts this year.
All the students contributed to making the echidna sculpture which was on display that evening and is now back at Woodlupine and can be found in Harmony Creek.
I would like to extend a big thank you to Mrs O’Sullivan for making the evening a success.
Athletics Carnivals
The Athletics Carnival was brilliant! I have had lots of positive feedback from parents, teachers and students. The children competed very enthusiastically and demonstrated great
sportsmanship. We were very pleased to see so many families watching and supporting our students.
I would like to acknowledge and thank all Woodlupine staff for their efforts in making this carnival such a success, particularly Mrs Kleinhanss.
The final scores were: Fortius 1041 Altius 990 Citius 831

Christmas in a Shoebox 2021
Friday’s Assembly was the culmination of another successful Christmas in a Shoebox at Woodlupine PS. Thank you to all the families for your support.
Every class contributed by filling boxes of donations and writing friendship cards and letters to children they will never meet. The boxes of kindness filled the stage.
As, part of our STEM Design and Technology Program all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 designed and created an item to be included in the
‘giving boxes’. We had colourful necklaces, sock puppets and worms, pocket pets, pick-up sticks, clay models, pencil toppers and octopus.
Lots of parents and friends visited our open afternoon where we displayed these items in the Djilba Gallery. We have now handed over all our items
Seeds in Space Project (What will Happen to the Wattle)
The Seeds in Space Project; is a project where a quantity of Golden Wattle Seeds were sent up to space for 6 months at the ISS (International Space Station). Upon their arrival about 500 groups of people had sent submissions, with only 200 ending up with the final seeds. The seeds given will then be planted, monitored and compared to other Golden Wattle for over a year.
Woodlupine PS students completed a submission in 3 days and we are one of the 200 groups across Australia to be selected for this project. The team at Woodlupine PS includes Year 6 students, Jett, Sukhpreet, Jaslyn and Cody F, our
gardener Tammy and Year 5/6 teacher Ms. Joyce.

Faction Athletics Carnival Results
Recounts from Room 20
On the day of the Sports Carnival 7th September, the first events were the Long Jump and Javelin. Jake, Marcus, Jett and I went to help the Kindy’s with their events. The first event I did was the Boys Champion 100m race and I came 5th place. I was happy as I tried my hardest. My favourite event was tug of war and we won it… and relay, and leader ball, Fortius won and Altius came 2nd, Citius came last. When the year 6 relays came on I tripped and fell on Marcus.
Thanks to Mrs Kleinhanss, all the teacher parent helpers who did the sausage sizzle and lolly jar.

On Tuesday of Week 8 we had our Athletics Carnival, it was a very big day and was amazing. The Kindy and Pre Primary were up first. I came to school early to help set up a few things like the fundraising and handing out the events schedule. Later on in the day, my first event was Turbo. I honestly did not do my best but I improved my score so I’m happy about that. I participated in a lot of events like Turbo Jav, 100m sprints, Tug-of –War and the team games. Thanks to Mrs Kleinhanss and for Ms Joyce for our faction teacher. We did have the best cheer team thanks to Olivia M, who was really good at cheerleading.

At the Faction Carnival I did long jump and throws. For long jump I didn’t know where I came but for throws I came fourth! I was really proud of myself. Then we did relays and leader ball which was so much fun. There was also a sausage sizzle and I had sausage which was really yummy! A lot of people did a wonderful job as well and I got to hang out with my friends. For each games my faction came first, twice! At the end they announced Fortius came first, Altius came second and Citius came last, My faction is Altius but even though we came second I still had a great day.

On the 7
thSeptember Tuesday our school had a Sports Carnival. Chase, Jake, Jett and I go to help
the Kindy children with their race in the morning. Next we did the raking of the sand pit they
used for the long jump. After that we had recess then everyone marched on to the oval in their
faction, then there were races. After a number of races, it was final my turn. We started the race
and I came first! Jett and calm second and Liam came third. We also had lunch. Thank you to
Mrs Kleinhanss and the P&C for the sausage sizzle
.Interschool Athletics Carnival
Recounts from Room 20
My favourite part of the Interschool was the team games. Just seeing the team work was incredible and even though we lost, we kept our heads high and we all still had a great time. We were able to come 5th which although it’s not the best we are a small school and at least we didn’t come last!
I would also like to thank Mrs Kleinhanss for organising this event and letting us be able to participate and co-operate in this amazing interschool carnival!
Jett
My highlights for the Interschool was in the 400m my little sister came 3rd or 4th and I came 4th nearly 3rd! Todd came 4th in his Long jump and I came 4th in the Turbo, although I could have done better. On Friday my sister Sapphire came 1st in the75m Champion race and Todd came 4th in the 100m Champion race. In the B division I came 3rd nearly 2nd! In the team games we did ok. In the Year 6 boys relay we came 4th. Altogether Woodlupine came 5th and given the fact that we are a small school still did great. Thank you to Mrs Kleinhanss and Mrs Harris for coming and supporting us.
Hunter
At the Interschool my favourite event was Leader Ball. We came 4
thin that event. I was in Leader Ball and Pass ball, we all tried our hardest however we didn’t win pass ball, we had to nice bus driver and at the tent we were next to Wattle Grove and Forrestfield. I had the best day! I thank all the people who made it happen especially Mrs Kleinhanss.

Woodlupine Primary School Year 6 students Jett (left), Cody, Jaslyn and Sakhpreet, with teacher Karena Joyce and gardener Tammy Quarman.
AN intrepid group of Year 6 students have been selected to take part in a groundbreak- ing experiment on the effects of space travel on native Australian seeds.
Woodlupine Prima- ry School students Jett Ferguson, Sakhpreet Kaur, Cody Funnell
and Jaslyn Toop were selected for the What’ll Happen to The Wattle?
(WHTW) program, receiving a punnet of golden wattle seeds that have spent six months aboard the International Space Station.
The seeds will be planted on the school grounds, and their pro- gress monitored for up to two years.
The Woodlupine Seeds in Space team, which also includes Year 6 teacher Karena Joyce and school gar- dener Tammy Quarman, were thrilled their sub- mission to the program, which was created in only three days, was successful.
“The only thing from space I’ve ever touched has been in a museum so it’s pretty cool we were selected to look af- ter the seeds,” Jett said.
“We’re going to plant them sometime next term next to other wattle seeds that haven’t been to space for compari- son, to see what hap- pens and if they grow differently,”
“I’m not sure if they will [grow different- ly], because six months
isn’t that long a time to change cellular struc- ture, but who knows?
“I hope they will look different – it won’t be that fun if they look ex- actly the same.”
However, Year 6 classmate Jacob thinks the space wattle will have altered DNA, ref- erencing NASA’s 2015 Twin Study.
“I think it will be like the case of the astronaut identical twins, where the one who went to space had different bi- ological reactions after coming back than his brother on earth did.
“The wattle that’s been to space might have different reactions or growth than the earth wattle.”
Run by the One Gi- ant Leap Australia
Foundation and sup- ported by the Austral- ian Space Agency and Japan Aerospace Ex- ploration Agency, the WHTW program select- ed around 200 groups across Australia to give the seeds to.
Team member Cody thinks they were chosen for the program thanks to their work collabo- rating with the Western Australian Herbarium in their Seed Bank pro- ject, which assists in protecting critically en- dangered native plant species.
“Our submission in- volved us talking about how the Seed Bank project has given us the opportunity to learn and observe the care-taking process of propagating endangered native plant
species,” she said.
“We said this would help ensure the space wattle seeds are enthu- siastically cared for.
“We love native plants and are so excit- ed to be a part of some- thing so cool.”
The group will ac- tively experiment with the seeds, logging data into a special app, and have the opportunity to
join webinars, telecon- ferences, gatherings and virtual meetings with astronauts, space experts, fl ight directors and other professionals.
A nationwide map identifying the location of Australia’s ‘space wattle’ trees will be cre- ated following the pro- jects end.
