5. HISTORY
C a i r n s (1935) r e p o r t e d t h a t t h e p r i n c i p a l l o d e o r l o d e s were d i s c o v e r e d and s t a k e d on Twelve M i l e C r e e k i n J u l y , 1892. A p p a r e n t l y , t h e f i r s t r e c o r d e d p r o d u c t i o n was i n 1909 when 34 t o n s o f
s i l v e r - l e a d o r e y i e l d e d , on t h e a v e r a g e , 84 ounces o f s i l v e r and 24% l e a d t o t h e t o n . C a i r n s f u r t h e r r e p o r t s t h a t by 1935 t h e r e were f i v e p r i n c i p a l a d i t s and a s h a f t d e v e l o p i n g t h e main l o d e and a number o f a d d i t i o n a l s h o r t a d i t s t o t e s t m i n e r a l - i z e d c r o s s s t r u c t u r e s . The t o t a l r e c o r d e d p r o d u c t i o n f r o m t h e U t i c a Mine between 1909 and 1958 i s 820,394 o u n c e s o f s i l v e r from 7066 t o n s mined f o r an a v e r a g e g r a d e o f 116 ounces o f s i l v e r , 13.4% l e a d and 4%
z i n c . M i n o r amounts o f g o l d , cadmium and antimony have a l s o been p r o d u c e d . The l a s t o p e r a t o r was Mr. J . A. Cooper o f K a s l o , B. C.
S t e v e n s o n (1979) r e p o r t s t h a t i n 1960 L a j o M i n e s a c q u i r e d an i n t e r e s t i n t h e p r o p e r t y , e r e c t e d a 50 t o n p e r day m i l l , and a p p a r e n t l y p r o c e s s e d 4000 t o n s w i t h an a v e r a g e g r a d e o f 8.7 ounces o f s i l v e r , 0.8% l e a d and 1.5% z i n c p e r t o n .

I n 1964 L a m i n t M i n i n g C o r p o r a t i o n a c q u i r e d a l e a s e on t h e p r o p e r t y and t r e a t e d 1590 t o n s , 1000 t o n s o f w h i c h was o l d b a c k f i l l and dump r o c k .

6. GEOLOGY
The Twelve M i l e C r e e k a r e a i s u n d e r l a i n by T r i a s s i c - J u r a s s i c S l o c a n Group s e d i m e n t s w h i c h c o n s i s t o f s l a t e , a r g i l l i t e , q u a r t z i t e , l i m e s t o n e , c o n g l o m e r a t e and t u f f . L o c a l l y t h e s e r o c k s have been h i g h l y deformed and metamorphosed w i t h
much o f t h e a r g i l l i t e now b e i n g an a n d a l u s i t e s c h i s t . ( L i t t l e , 1960). The m e t a s e d i m e n t s have been i n t r u c e d by t h r e e , s m a l l i r r e g u l a r s t o c k s o f medium g r a i n e d g r a n i t e and a number o f d i k e s o f a c i d i c c o m p o s i t i o n .
Two v e i n s have been p a r t i a l l y d e v e l o p e d , and e a r l y p r o d u c t i o n was p r e d o m i n e n t l y from t h e E a s t V e i n w h i c h i s s u b p a r a l l e l t o t h e West V e i n and a p p r o x i m a t e l y 100 f e e t d i s t a n t . The v e i n s s t r i k e n o r t h e a s t e r l y and d i p between 60° and 70°
S.E. The E a s t V e i n v a r i e s i n w i d t h from a few cm t o j u s t o v e r 2 m e t r e s and t h e West V e i n from one t o 6 m e t r e s . The v e i n s c o n t a i n g a l e n a

s p h a l e r i t e i n a c a l c i t e , s i d e r i t e q u a r t z gangue L i t t l e (1960) r e p o r t s t h e E a s t V e i n has been s t o p e d on t h e 4 t h l e v e l f o r a l e n g t h o f j u s t o v e r 200 m e t r e s , and was c o n t i n u o u s f o r 80
m e t r e s above t h e l e v e l . The West V e i n i s r e p o r t e d t o c o n t a i n an' o r e s h o o t some 180 m e t r e s l o n g b u t i n somewhat l o w e r g r a d e t h a n t h e E a s t V e i n .
The two v e i n s have been d e v e l o p e d by w o r k i n g s on t h e 3, 4, 5 and 7 l e v e l s w i t h t h e p r i n c i p a l e a r l y p r o d u c t i o n from t h e No. 3 and No. 4 l e v e l s . As a r e s u l t o f p r e v i o u s m i n i n g o p e r a t i o n s two l a r g e dumps r e m a i n on t h e p r o p e r t y , No. 7 dump and No. 4 l e v e l dump. The No. 7 l e v e l i s a t an e l e v a t i o n o f a b o u t 100 m e t r e s below No. 4 and a p p r o x i m a t e l y 800 m e t r e s t o t h e s o u t h e a s t .

7. ORE RESERVES

Mr. R. W o l f e i n s p e c t e d p o r t i o n s o f
a c c e s s i b l e u n d e r g r o u n d w o r k i n g s , and, i n g e n e r a l f o u n d them i n r e l a t i v e l y p o o r c o n d i t i o n . On t h e 7 t h l e v e l , West V e i n workings, t h e r e a r e s e v e r a l c a v e s , some up t o 10 t o n s , and t h e w a t e r i n p l a c e s i s a b o u t one m e t r e deep. The t i m b e r i s d e s c r i b e d as " c o m p l e t e l y r o t t e n " , and l a d d e r s i n "poor
r e p a i r " . T h e r e i s no a c c e s s on t h e 4 t h l e v e l . T h e r e i s p o s s i b l e a c c e s s v i a t h e main r a i s e from t h e E a s t V e i n l e v e l t o t h e 5 t h l e v e l , however due t o c o n s i d e r a b l e w a t e r , s p e c i a l equipment would be r e q u i r e d . C o n s e q u e n t l y t h e r e i s o n l y l i m i t e d a c c e s s and o n l y a few p l a c e s a v a i l a b l e t o check sample u n d e r g r o u n d , and one must r e l y h e a v i l y on

The U t i c a Mine has been a r e l a t i v e l y
s m a l l , s p o r a t i c , b u t h i g h g r a d e p r o d u c e r o f s i l v e r , l e a d and z i n c ( w i t h m i n o r g o l d , antimony and
cadmium) s i n c e 1909. C u r r e n t l y , much o f t h e u n d e r - g r o u n d w o r k i n g s a r e i n a c c e s s i b l e , b u t a few s e c t i o n s o f t h e v e i n s were r e c e n t l y c h e c k sampled by Mr. R.
W o l f e , P. Eng. The a s s a y r e s u l t s o f t h e v e i n m a t e r i a l v a r y f r o m a low o f 0.33 o u n c e s o f s i l v e r t o a h i g h o f 24.50 ounces p e r t o n . C o n s i d e r a b l e r e h a b i l i t a t i o n o f t h e o l d u n d e r g r o u n d w o r k i n g s would have t o be
c o n d u c t e d i n o r d e r t o mine r e s e r v e s as r e p o r t e d by e a r l i e r w o r k e r s , however t h e r e a r e p o s s i b l e r e s e r v e s a v a i l a b l e i n b a c k f i l l i n o l d s t o p e s . I f t h e r e i s an i n c r e a s e i n t h e p r i c e o f s i l v e r , a r e - e v a l u a t i o n o f t h e u n d e r g r o u n d r e s e r v e s s h o u l d be made.
