UNC vs. FLORIDA STATE

• Carolina is 29-11-4 against Florida State since the teams first played in 1995.

• The Tar Heels are 5-4-1 against the Seminoles in the last 10 games.

• UNC is 10-2-3 at home against FSU.

• The schools played one time last season, a 3-2 Florida State victory in Cary in November in the ACC Tournament championship game. The No. 1-ranked Seminoles scored twice in the first six minutes and added a third two minutes into the second half for a 3-0 lead.

Rachel Jones converted a penalty and Brianna Pinto cut the margin to one with a goal in the 89th minute. The three-goal deficit was Carolina’s largest since a 3-0 loss at Southern California in 2016.

NOTEBOOK

• Carolina has started 18 different players this season and had 11 different starting lineups in the first 14 games. UNC has started the same lineup a season-high two games in a row three different times this season.

• Four players – goalkeeper Claudia Dickey, center back Maycee Bell, Emily Moxley and Emily Colton – have started all 14 games. Moxley has started at forward, midfield and back;

Colton at forward and midfield.

• Sophomore Talia Dellaperuta made her first start of the season at NC State. She missed 10 games this year due to injury.

• Thirteen Tar Heels have scored this season, including six who netted their first collegiate goals.

• Carolina is 4-1-1 against ranked opponents. Carolina’s most recent win over the No. 1 ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches poll was a 2-1, double overtime win over Virginia in 2019.

• Midfielder Sam Meza returned to action at NC State after missing two games due to a leg injury, but the Tar Heels were without Avery Patterson. The ACC’s co-Defensive Player of the Week for her performance against Virginia took a hard fall in the opening half at Boston College on October 10. She was unable to play in the second half and overtime at BC and didn’t play against NC State. Patterson was Carolina’s Player of the Match vs.

Clemson, Virginia and Pittsburgh, the three games prior to the match at BC.

• Freshmen defender Emerson Elgin has not played since the second game and freshman forward Ally Sentnor suffered a season-ending injury in the first preseason game.

• Carolina is playing 13 freshmen and sophomores significant minutes this season and has no fifth-year seniors on the roster. Those 13 underclassmen include freshmen Emily Colton, Makenna Dominguez, Ruby Grant, Annika Huhta, Emily Murphy, Bella Sember and Lauren Wrigley and sophomores Abby Allen, Molly Baker, Sam Meza, Emily Moxley, Avery Patterson and Paige Tolentino.

• Allen, Colton, Meza, Moxley, Murphy, Patterson and Wrigley have been regulars in the starting lineup.

• Avery Patterson’s goal at Pittsburgh snapped a streak during which eight different Tar Heels scored Carolina’s last eight goals dating back to the 7-1 win at Florida on September 9. They include Emily Murphy, Rachel Jones and Rachael Dorwart against the Gators, Avery Patterson and Emily Colton in the 2-2 tie vs. Virginia Tech and Bella Sember, Isabel Cox and Claudia Dickey in the 3-0 win over Clemson. Patterson was the first to score twice in the last five games.

• Carolina is averaging 8.1 corners per game and allowing only 1.8 per contest.

The Tar Heels have allowed only 25 corners in 14 games.

The game will not be made up.

SCORING LEADERS

• Freshman Emily Colton leads the team with five goals with freshman Emily Murphy, senior Rachael Dorwart and sophomore Avery Patterson next with four.

They are among the eight players with multiple goals this season.

COLLEGE CUP REGULARS

• The Tar Heels have reached the College Cup in each of the last three seasons, including the national championship game in 2018 and 2019. No other program has accomplished that in the last three seasons.

• Carolina has played in the College Cup (the national semifinals and finals) 30 times. Notre Dame is second with 12.

PRO HEELS

• Three players who played for the Tar Heels last year are playing in the NWSL this season. Emily Fox was selected first overall by Racing Louisville in January’s draft. Brianna Pinto, who elected to play for UNC in the spring, was chosen No. 3 by Gotham FC. Taylor Otto was selected No. 11 by Racing Louisville.

CAPTAINS

• Carolina’s 2021 captains are Maycee Bell, Aleigh Gambone, Tori Hansen and Rachel Jones.

CLAUDIA

• Claudia Dickey has made 32 saves and has six shutouts this season. She ranks 20th in the nation in shutouts. In her career, the Charlotte, N.C., native has 27 solo shutouts (41 total), made 141 saves, allowed 31 goals and has a save percentage of .820.

• Dickey is 50-7-4 as a Tar Heel.

DICKEY CONVERTS

• Dickey scored her second career goal by penalty kick in Carolina’s 3-0 win over Clemson on September 26. She also scored from the spot against Virginia in the 2020 ACC Tournament semifinals.

• Dickey is also 2 for 2 in penalty kicks in NCAA postseason play, converting against UCLA in the 2018 quarterfinals and Stanford in the 2019 national championship match.

TWO-GOAL L’S

• Carolina has played 854 games since the start of the 1986 season, losing by more than one goal just six times. Those losses include: 4-1 to Notre Dame on 11/20/10;

2-0 to Virginia on 10/20/13; 2-0 to Virginia on 11/7/14; 3-0 to USC on 9/11/16; 2-0 to Arkansas on 9/15/19; and 3-1 to Santa Clara on 5/13/21.

2021 GAME RECAPS

NC STATE 1, UNC 0 (OCT. 16)

• Jameese Joseph scored in the 26th minute in the first half.

• UNC had a 24-8 edge in shots and 10-3 advantage in corner kicks and forced NC State goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta to make a career-high eight saves.

• Carolina is now 47-3-2 all-time against the Pack.

• Carolina played without Avery Patterson, who was injured at Boston College.

• It was UNC’s first away loss since a 2-0 defeat at Arkansas on 9/15/19 and first ACC road loss since 10/14/16 at Notre Dame (0-1).

UNC 2, BOSTON COLLEGE 1, OT (OCT. 10)

• Julia Dorsey tied the game with 2:09 to play in regulation and Maggie Pierce won it with a upper corner strike with 2:32 to play in the first overtime.

• Both goals were the first of their respective careers.

• Dorsey made her first start of the season in just her third game since returning from injury.

• BC took the lead four minutes into the second half.

• It was Carolina’s third overtime win of the season (3-0-2 in five OT games), its most extra-time wins in a season since winning four times in 2014.

UNC 1, PITTSBURGH 0 (OCT. 7)

• Avery Patterson headed home the only goal of the game with 9:17 to play to give No. 5 North Carolina a 1-0 road win over Pittsburgh. Carolina outshot the Panthers, 24-3, and took all 11 corner kicks in the game, but it wasn’t until UNC’s 10th corner of the match before the Tar Heels could get a shot past Pitt keeper Katherine Robinson.

• Maggie Pierce’s corner found Patterson, who headed the ball off the underside of the cross bar. The ball caromed down off the chest of Panther defender Landy Mertz, but Mertz was inside the goal.

Referees checked video to confirm the ball crossed the goal line and after a short review confirmed the goal for Patterson, her fourth of the season.

• Carolina had multiple premium scoring chances. With 37:15 to play, Patterson launched a free kick that Robinson saved by leaping high and redirecting the ball off the cross bar. Six minutes later Robinson stuck out her left hand to stop a Lauren Wrigley shot from 10 yards out. Two minutes after Patterson gave the Tar Heels the lead, Robinson made a save on a point blank shot by Isabel Cox.

• In the first half, Emily Colton’s shot was stopped by Robinson with a diving, two- handed save. On the resulting corner kick, the ball ricocheted off Abby Allen across the goal and hit the left post.

• Pitt’s best chance of the evening came with 27:00 to play when Athalie Polomo’s free kick sailed just over the bar.

• The shutout was Carolina’s and goalkeeper Claudia Dickey’s sixth of the season and third in as many games.

UNC 0, VIRGINIA 0, 2OT (OCT. 3)

• No. 5 North Carolina outshot second- ranked Virginia, 20-10, had twice as many corner kicks and hit the post twice, but the women’s soccer teams played to a

• It was Carolina’s first scoreless tie since the 2019 NCAA championship game against Stanford (the Cardinal won the title on penalty kicks).

• Carolina had the best and most numerous scoring chances in the game, including three in overtime that would have ended the contest. Abby Allen’s header off a corner kick, one of a season-high 14 for UNC, slammed into the right post with 1:55 to play in the first 10-minute overtime period.

• Midway through the second extra period, Emily Colton broke free for an apparent one-on-one but defender Talia Staude raced back to block Colton’s shot. Ninety seconds later, another Tar Heel corner was headed straight up by Maycee Bell, then was re-directed in front of the goal where Emily Murphy launched it over the cross bar from six yards out.

• The Tar Heels had three outstanding opportunities early in the second period.

Colton hit the right post just under 10 minutes into the half after a pass from Murphy. Twenty-three seconds later, Ivory made a diving save of a header by Rachel Jones. Then with 32:43 to play, Virginia GK Laurel Ivory made another diving stop of a Colton shot from the top of the box.

UNC 2, VIRGINIA TECH 2, 2OT (SEPT. 23)

• Virginia Tech scored both its goals after defensive errors – the first on a misplayed pass to Claudia Dickey that led to a breakaway and the second after a failed clear.

• It was just the 28th UNC trailed by two goals, the sixth time the Tar Heels avoided defeat and just the first time UNC forced a tie in that situation.

• The last time UNC trailed by two goals

and won/tied was a 3-2 win at Notre Dame on 9/20/14.

• It was the first time UNC trailed and tied since playing Texas in 2018.

• The 32 shots and 16 shots on goal were both season highs for the Tar Heels.

• Patterson scored to cut the deficit to one after a cross from Rachel Jones from out on the left wing.

• The Duke loss marked the first time UNC was shutout since the scoreless tie against Stanford in the 2019 NCAA final.

• Carolina out-shot the Blue Devils, 15-9, forcing Duke goalie Ruthie Jones to make six saves. Claudia Dickey made stopped three shots for UNC.

• The Tar Heels’ best scoring chances came back-to-back mid-first half. First, Libby Moore’s shot was tipped over the bar, then Ruthie Jones prevented an own goal when Carolina’s corner kick was deflected toward the net by a Blue Devil defender.
