The purpose of a CV is to get you an interview. This session will demonstrate how to showcase your talents to maximise your interview success.

• Identify the basic types of CV in order to use the right format for each application

• Understand how language can affect your success • See how to build your CV over your career.

John Makin

Dento-legal Adviser, DDU

Although we share the same undergraduate qualification we all have different skills, interests, experiences and expectations. There is no one career path that is ideal for everyone and choosing the wrong path may, in time, lead to dissatisfaction and disillusionment.

So what factors should influence your choice? This presentation will consider how an appreciation of your own learning style, personality type and the management of your expectations can help towards a happier, less stressful and successful career.

Delegates will get a better understanding of • How your behaviour can impact on complaints/

patients/team-working

• How to manage patient expectations – and your own!

Getting into private general practice

Acknowledging the changes in the demand for private dentistry and the difficulties of working in the NHS through inadequate FD places, more colleagues will want to explore what working in private general practice means. This talk will cover general trends in practice indicating what patients will want to have from dentists outside the government’s designed system of care. It will show how those demands from patients are translating into products and services that can be provided outside of a cash rationed service, by involving the patient in the diagnosis through to offering state of the art dentistry.

• what is private dentistry

• why patients are seeking personalised dental care • what private dentistry means in terms of services

and technology

• how to consider going straight into private dental services

• patient expectations from dentistry.

drawbacks of this pathway from Pranay’s personal experience as a specialist prosthodontist.

In this session she will explain what the specialty encompasses and provides an overview of the essential core clinical competencies now required. Extended competencies will be explained and the career opportunities available in terms of clinical work, research and teaching.

One of the issues facing young or newly qualified dentists is the culture of fear when carrying out minor oral surgery. This session will cover what procedures can be appropriately carried out in a general dental practice setting and ensure you are prepared and able to deal with any complications that arise.

This talk will seek to inform attendees regarding the scope of oral medicine practice and their role in the management of oral soft tissue disorders. It will also cover options for obtaining experience in oral medicine and how this can benefit your practice and provide information regarding pursuing a career in oral medicine. • Understand the scope of oral medicine practice and

its interactions with medical specialities

Why I am involved with the BDA

1. Networking: I meet likeminded people at regional branch events, where I can share my experiences and learn from others. Lots of friends have found jobs by networking and it’s a really rewarding thing to make time for.

2. Lobbying: the BDA represents us in discussions with government. The more of us who are members, the stronger our voice is.

3. CPD: the CPD Hub makes it easy to track and record my learning. I also get 60 hours with the BDJ and

BDJ In Practice per year.

4. Kudos: I think there’s some kudos to being a member; it looks good on my CV and LinkedIn profile, but it also shows prospective employers that I’m proud of my profession.

5. News and information: it’s easy to stay up-to-date with dental news and information. I get emails whenever there’s breaking news. The first people I hear from are those representing me at the BDA.
