THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

January 10, 2016

He saved us through the bath of rebirth

and renewal by the Holy Spirit.

Titus 3-5

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

My dear friends,

As we start the New Year, I wanted to share some parish news with all of you:

 We had a wonderful Christmas season. I want to thank everyone who contributed to making our church shine, and also thank all those who gave a very generous Christmas offering to the parish. May God repay you all for your generosity.

 In some Masses, particularly the Saturday Vigil Masses, some of you may have noticed that our brand new sound system that we just installed has been malfunctioning. We have discovered that this is a result not of the new system but probably of the church’s electrical wiring. We are currently addressing this problem and pray that we continue to have the crystal clear sound that we have been enjoying since last summer.

 In School News, our annual School Open House is rapidly approaching on January 24th. We invite all our families who are not registered in the school to come and take a tour of the school and discover what sets Immaculate Conception Catholic School apart from all others school. Our students are consistently better prepared for high school than those coming from other schools as I have been told countless times from teachers at our area high schools. There is also financial assistance available to pay tuition through the State of Florida’s “Step Up Program.” So stop by our school on January 24 at 10:00am and discover what has made Immaculate a School of Excellence for over 60 years.

 Our youth group starts up again this Sunday after the 6:00pm Youth Mass. I ask you for special prayers for our youth group kids who will be accompanying me to Washington, D.C. on January 22 for the annual March for Life. We should all be proud of our young people who are standing up for life!

 Finally, just a reminder for those who did not hear my homily last week or read it on the internet. I called upon all our parishioners to take on the New Year’s resolution of spending more time in our Perpetual Adoration Chapel in 2016. Christ is waiting for you. Visit and adore him just as the shepherds and the Magi did during this Christmas season that we conclude today.

God bless you all,

Jubilee Year of Mercy

January 10, 2016

The Epiphany of the Lord

Fittingly, this Jubilee Year of Mercy is also the Lectionary’s Year of Luke, for Luke’s Gospel highlights God’s mercy in finding the lost, healing the sick, restoring the broken, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving the sinner through Jesus’ ministry. But before doing, Luke’s Jesus is always

praying. As practical moderns programmed to

measure worth by productivity, we instinctively appreciate the Jubilee’s call to embrace the practical challenges of our baptism. But today Luke focuses not on Jesus being baptized, but on Jesus praying after baptism. So must we pray to become the disciples we are called to be, that the Spirit empower us to do what disciples are called to do. Imitating Jesus’ openness to the Spirit will enable us to cooperate with the grace that transforms us into “beloved sons [and daughters] . . . in whom the Father is well pleased,” living out, in this Jubilee

Year of Mercy, the extraordinary potential of our

baptism. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

As we begin the 2016 year, let us reflect on the many blessings

in our lives. When we truly believe that all we have is a gift

from God, then we must be willing to give up some things so

that we can share our blessings as God intended. Living a

stewardship lifestyle means not only being responsible for our

own life, but the lives of others as well.

Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people

like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal

meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words of “sacer” meaning sacred and “facere”

mean-ing to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharmean-ing our gifts in the service of God.

Soon we will be asking you to make a contribution to this year’s ABCD, please take this time to

prayerfully consider what sacrificial gift you will be able to place at God’s service.

If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. Mark 9:35.

am well pleased”

ABCD
