Fire BellesREPORT OF THE
FOREST
FIRE
WARDEN
AND
YOUR
DISTRICT
CHIEF
The
1964 forest fireseason
surpassed
therecord
year of 1963 in both length and severity.
For
thesecond
successive year,
we
experienced a rainfall deficiency ofmore
than ten inches and thecompounding
of such drought conditions, together with themany
days of strong, dry winds, characterized 1964 as one of themost
hazardous
years
in the past half century. Although our fireseason
was
threeweeks
longer than that of 1963, thenumber
offires
showed
only a slight increase andmore
remarkable
was
the fact that thearea burned
dropped
from
2,280 acresin 1963 to 900 acres in 1964.
Early
detection and rapid response keptmany
potentialfire disastersfrom becoming
reality.We
allowe
a debt of gratitude to themen
in thiscommunity who
responded
and foughtour fires soefficient-ly.
Our
state isnow
86%
wooded
and
itseconomy
—
bothindustrial and recreational
—
is greatly dependent on thisforest resource.
The
responsibility for adequate firepro-tection of this great
area
—
4,350,000 acres—
is every-one's responsibilityand
prevention is one of ourmost
ef-fective tools.Prevention is
good
common
sense.1.

matches; and
(3)smokers.
Let's be mindful of the fact that all such fires
endanger
property and lives.
