University Benchmarks

(2)

Benchmarking is often viewed through higher

education scholarship as

•  A standard or reference by which others can

be measured or judged (Webster’s Dictionary)

•  Finding out who is the best in an area and

adopting their best practices

•  Ongoing and continuous data collection,

analysis and actions based on that data (from

baseline data to periodic data collection)

•  Searching for best practices and using such

practices for continuous progress which leads

to superior performance

(3)

Each Benchmark should be “sanitized” relative to specific objectives ,specific measures of success identified in yearly strategic plan update. Examples include”

--Becoming entrepreneurs and innovators

-Seeking feedback from corporate partners regarding skills reflected by recent graduates --State of the arts teaching methodologies

--Students engage in research and entrepreneurial activities

--Strengthening Co-Op program that advance student experiential learning --Developing sustainable resources

--Policies and procedures that enhance operational performance and accountability Improving admission, retention and graduation rates by employing best practices that grow enrollment and support

--Build off of high demand programs

--Develop partnerships with corporate sponsors and other universities

--Enhance operational performance through shared governance, use of performance management and evaluation/assessment systems

The Common Data Set (CDS) initiative is a collaborative effort among data providers in the higher

education community and publishers as represented by the College Board, Peterson's, and U.S. News & World Report. The combined goal of this collaboration is to improve the quality and accuracy of information provided to all involved in a student's transition into higher education, as well as to reduce the reporting burden on data providers.
