First at Fleming

This is a two day orientation program which will enable you to: Better understand your learning disability

Identify your learning strengths and weaknesses Meet with key disability service providers:

- Learning Disability Counsellor - Assistive Technologist

- Learning Strategist

Get your accommodations put in place for the semester Have hands-on experience with assistive technology Meet, learn and socialize with others with a learning dis-ability

Explore Fleming before the halls are crowded

Have a current psycho-educational report in place prior to the start of classes in September

Parents may choose to attend a parent session from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on the first day where we will discuss the types of services available, student responsibilities, and the Bursary for Students with Disabilities. There will be ample time for a question and answer period.

A psycho-educational assessment with a learning disabil-ity diagnosis on it from a clinical psychologist is needed by all participants.

IPRC and IEP information from high school is also needed. Limited funding is available from the First at Fleming program for those who have a psycho-educational assessment which is more than 5 years old. The name of a psychologist in your area will be provided.

NOTE: First at Fleming is funded through the provincial gov-ernment’s summer transition program and is contingent on funding approval. We will contact you to discuss alternatives should the program not receive funding.

Learn about all of the excellent resources that are avail-able at Fleming

Meet key people who are available to help

See demonstrations of assistive technology that you may find useful in college

Understand the ways in which college differs from high school

Learn about self-advocacy and resources which can help you develop this important skill

Head Start begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. and finishes at 11 a.m. After 11:00 a.m. individual appointments will start with your counsellor. If you have free time from this point do not forget to check out other student services, buy used books, arrange to get a locker and/or parking pass for the school year, check out housing options and otherwise get a feel for the campus.

Parents may choose to attend a parent session from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. where we will discuss the types of services available, student responsibilities, and the Bursary for Stu-dents with Disabilities. There will be ample time for a question and answer period.
