Why study IT at FedUni?

Online Learning

Studying through Federation University Australia online allows you to complete exactly the same program as an on-campus student, but with the flexibility of studying from home. It’s the perfect option if you need to balance your studies with work, family or other

commitments. Instead of attending classes in person, your program is delivered entirely through Online Learning, which may include recorded audio or video lectures, a set of readings, questions posted in a discussion forum or an online quiz.

In addition to this entirely online study option, some distance study is available where you will occasionally attend workshops or weekend classes throughout the year. These study options are called Flexible Delivery and Block Mode.

You can choose from a range of programs that focus on:

• Cloud computing • Enterprise computing • General computing • Business systems • Mobile technologies • Software engineering • Computer games • Digital media • Web technologies • Professional practice (industry experience) • Networking • Programming

IT specialisations for success

IT is a pervasive part of today’s world and is a vital component across every organisation and industry. From the computer games industry, business, management, finance, government organisations to the health, resources, education and hospitality sectors – information technology is central to keeping an organisation running.

While the Bachelor of IT will provide you with a fundamental knowledge of IT (along with skills in key areas including cloud computing and mobile application development) and allow you to keep your options wide open in the IT industry, we also recognise the need for expert IT specialists. We have developed a suite of specialisations that will ensure you can follow the career path of your dreams.

All of our programs are accredited by the Australian Computer Society at the Professional level.

Business Systems

A specialisation in business systems will equip you with the skills to study the overall business and information needs of an organisation, in order to develop solutions to business and related systems problems. Your role commences in the first stages of the system design, and continues through the building and programming stages of the systems

development process. You will work closely with clients to identify their requirements and will construct information technology (IT) definitions based on identified needs of the organisation.

Computer Games and Digital Media

Games developers design, create and produce computer or video games and other graphically based software in a range of industries. Graduates will work in development teams as artists, programmers, producers and marketing staff – creating detailed design documentation, preparing and designing graphics, animations and images for editing, and testing of designs. Graduates may also work in many other industries including, but not limited to, mobile application development, health, armed forces, education and automotive.

The games industry is one of the most lucrative industries in the world, even out earning Hollywood.

Software Engineering

Engineer the software products of the future from the smallest apps to the largest most bullet proof systems for secure financial systems, or large event management. As a software engineer you will create, maintain and modify computer and software programs such as operating systems, communications software, utility programs, compilers and database handlers. You will also evaluate new programming tools and

techniques and analyse current software products. Graduates will find employment in a variety of industries with the production of medium to large scale software.

Professional Practice

Developed in conjunction with IBM to produce graduates who have an appreciation of the culture of work as an entrepreneur and business IT professional, you will combine university studies and practical experience to greatly enhance your employment

opportunities anywhere in the world. Upon completion, you will graduate with one year’s work experience and be given opportunity to apply for a position at IBM. Jaimee Berezny

Bachelor of IT (Business Systems)

“I studied Business Systems at FedUni, Ballarat. I loved the campus at Mt Helen. The openness and atmosphere, everyone was very friendly and easy-going.

I stayed on campus during my first and second year, and I found this was a fantastic way to make new friends and socialise/study with different people and ages.

The staff were very approachable and made themselves available to you – you didn’t have to wait weeks for appointments! I enjoyed the flexibility of my program, being able to choose electives that suited my interests to develop my skills. The program was quite broad; and as I love all aspects of design, development and management, this suited me perfectly. Once I finished my program in Business Systems, I had skills in business, marketing, web-design, HR and a number of other areas. These skills provided me with the drive and knowledge to start my own business.

I work with web technologies, e-learning development, website development and graphic design on a daily basis and my program helped me cover a wide range of areas for this purpose.

I would strongly recommend that prospective students check out FedUni… the teaching staff are friendly and approachable, your peers become your friends in a classroom and social atmosphere, the environment, especially at Mt Helen is open and just a lot of good fun!”

Sae-Ra Germain

Bachelor of Computing (Honours)

“I studied the Bachelor of Computing (Honours). Since finishing my degree I have worked as a VET in Schools teacher for two years which I really enjoyed.

I have now moved to Melbourne and currently work for CAVAL LTD as a Digital Systems Specialist. I find it to be quite challenging at times but I really love the work.

At FedUni you’re not just a number, the staff are more than happy to sit with you to share ideas, continue on with research and they remember you for years to come. I think that the University is that friendly place where you’re not scared about learning new things.

It’s one of those places where you can make great friends, learn about new things, but all within your capabilities. You’re not turned away from wanting to research more. FedUni is a relatively small university in comparison to Universities in the big cities, so therefore, lecturers have the unique opportunity to see students through their learning career several times and with that they get to know you well and are able to push the student’s strengths and abilities.”
