Facilitator Script
Slacker Usability Test – Portable OOBE
June 2-3, 2008
This is a rough script for the usability test facilitator. The script shows flow and intent. Deviation from the script will be necessary depending upon how events unfold during the test.
In the script itself, italics are actions. Normal text is to be spoken.
Purpose Script Greet participant
and put at ease.
When the participants arrive, perform these tasks:
• Introduce yourself.
• Thank them for participating. They are going to help us make our product easier to use.
Forms: NDA, Video Release, and Survey
Before we begin, there are three forms for you to fill out:
1. The first is a non-disclosure agreement. By signing it, you agree to not tell anyone about the product you are discussing today. Please take a look at it and sign.
2. The second form is a video consent form. It allows us video tape this session. We will use the videotape only for research purposes only—not for advertising. No one outside of Slacker will see this video. Please review the form and sign.
3. Finally, there is a survey about your music habits.
Once you finish with these forms, I’ll go over what we will do during today’s session.
Set expectations During our time today, I first will ask you questions about your music habits. Then, we will look at a product we have in development.
During this test, I would like for you to talk aloud. Tell me what you are thinking and why you are thinking this as you perform the tasks. This feedback is critical. It enables us to understand what works or does not work and why. Remember that there are no right or wrong answers. If you have any questions during the test, feel free to ask. I may not be able to answer them until the end of test, but I will address them.
Once the tasks are complete, I will ask you questions about the products and your experiences here today.
When the test is over, I will give you the honorarium for participating today. Any questions?
Ascertain knowledge
Now ask the participant about his or her experience with Internet and satellite radio. <These questions are on a form that I fill out.>
Give intro about our product line – all 3 pieces, and that portable player is refreshed by Wi-Fi or USB.
Describe player: send radio stations to portable, play local content, 2 ways to refresh At the end of this session, I ask if there are any questions. When all have been answered, we go on to the tasks.
Device Tasks Display the web player. The device should be powered on and in the initial state- main menu.
1. What are your first impressions of this?
2. I’d like for you to play a radio station. You can pick anyone that you would enjoy.
3. Skip to the next song.
4. Pause the song. (Won’t see the word paused next to song)<once done> Un-pause the song.
5. Let’s say that you hate this song. Ban it so the station doesn’t play this song again.
6. Play another station.
7. What artist will this station play next?
8. Increase the volume.
9. Let’s say that you really like the song that is being played. Make this song a favorite.

10. Let’s say that you want to delete one of the stations on the Slacker Portable. How would you do that? They find it, but don’t do it.
11. Change the Now Playing view so you see a list of songs this station has played.
12. See if this question works. How would you expect to rate a song as a favorite after it already has been played? It’s not in menu, but will be a RC option.
13. Now take a few minutes to explore the Portable player. Play stations that interest you.
And use the ban and favorite buttons if you hear songs you really like or hate.
14. Now we’re going to explore the Library. It’s where the player stores your own content.
15. Expand a folder.
16. Find the song that you saved as a favorite and play it.
17. While this song is playing, ask the following: What do expect will happen once this song ends?
18. How would you restart this song. This button is not yet coded.
19. Delete the song you favorited.
20. Change the view of a library so it’s organized All Tracks.
21. How would you connect to the Slacker service in order to refresh the radio content?
22. Now I’d like for you to change the screen’s brightness level. <just find it, the actual task is not yet implemented.>
23. Each Slacker Portable has its own ID, called the Slacker Portable ID. When you purchase a device, you enter this ID into account management on the Web Player or Desktop Radio. Does this make sense? Where on this Slacker Portable would you expect to find this ID? Have them show me.
24. Is there anything that you wanted to do but you didn’t? <find out if we’re missing a feature they wanted or if they couldn’t find a feature we have>
End of tasks for player. Ask them to pause the player.
Task Questions Ask users the questions about the device. Record them on the sheet. Then trace the hand they used to hold the device.
Wrap up Okay, we have now completed all of the questions and tasks. Do you have any final questions or comments? Then that’s it. Here is your honorarium.
