Both HP and VERITAS share the common goal of simplifying IT. Our ongoing partnership delivers on this goal through rigorous interoperability testing, seamless product integration, and integrated services and support.
The strength of this partnership offers our customers a range of benefits, including:
Reduced IT Costs
Most VERITAS software solutions support HP-UX, Linux and Windows platforms, offering a common storage management interface across all platforms. Using a single storage management platform reduces training costs and IT complexity.
Choice and Flexibility
Whether you choose an HP server on HP-UX, Linux or Windows, VERITAS has solutions to improve storage management and availability. By ensuring interoperability across server, storage and software products, VERITAS and HP give you the freedom of choice.
Feature Alignment/Integration
By integrating the features of our hardware and software offerings, we extend the value of the individual products. For example:
•VERITAS Storage Foundation offers Dynamic Multipathing support for HP storage arrays, improving the availability of the arrays by offering multiple active paths to storage.
•VERITAS data management, clustering and data protection solutions are integrated and certified with OpenView Operations, extending the reach of the Operations software and enhancing centralized management capabilities.
The solution descriptions that follow provide many more examples of tight product integration.
Simplified Support
HP and VERITAS work together to ensure
interoperability and simplify support for customers. For example, patches and updates to the HP-UX file system and volume management are certified by both VERITAS and HP teams and delivered using HP’s patch delivery process. Customers can place a single call for support for VERITAS solutions running on HP.
The storage management and virtualization capabilities provided by the VERITAS Storage Foundation solutions enable better hardware utilization and enhanced availability. HP has named VERITAS Storage Foundation as the preferred file system and volume management solutions for highly available HP-UX 11i environments. HP is also integrating VERITAS technology as key elements of the HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE) for HP-UX 11i. The Virtual Server
Environment is an integrated offering designed to create a utility computing environment, in which a pool of dynamically-sizeable, virtual servers adapt dynamically to business priorities.
HP is bundling the VERITAS technologies with its Serviceguard high availability solution to provide storage virtualization necessary for fast failover and shared storage access. The bundled solutions described below will be available within 2005.

OPTIMIZING STORAGE MANAGEMENT
SOLUTIONS SOLUTION REQUIREMENTS
Simplifying Storage Management
VERITAS technology has been part of the HP-UX operating system for years as the On-Line JFS file system. HP bundles a basic version of the VERITAS Volume Manager with HP-UX 11i (Base VxVM).
By upgrading HP-UX with VERITAS Storage Foundation, you can take advantage of advanced storage management capabilities, including Dynamic Multipathing for optimal storage availability, a centralized GUI for managing all servers, online relayout, hot relocation, and FlashSnap storage snapshots. You also lay the
foundation for flexible, integrated storage solutions, like volume-based replication and enhanced database support.

Replicating Data Between Systems
With VERITAS Storage Foundation in place, you can use the flexible, volume-based replication offered by VERITAS Volume Replicator. VERITAS Volume Replicator delivers reliable, storage-independent replication over any IP network. The product manages data at the logical volume level, ensuring data integrity and reliability during replication.
• Replicate data over IP networks.
• Replicate data between different storage systems. The storage doesn’t need to match in size or configuration. For example, you can replicate data between an EMC array and an HP StorageWorks XP array with complete data integrity.
• Use asynchronous or synchronous replication depending on your needs without sacrificing data integrity.

DATA PROTECTION SOLUTIONS
SOLUTIONS SOLUTION REQUIREMENTS
Zero Downtime Backups
By using disk-based, point-in-time images of production backups, you can eliminate the “downtime” required for backups. VERITAS and HP have tested and validated the integration of VERITAS NetBackup’s automated backups with the SureStore BusinessCopy XP hardware-based snapshot capabilities. The integrated solution offers automated, non-disruptive point-in-time backup for business-critical applications and databases, such as Microsoft Exchange and Oracle

ServerFree Backups
In a server-free backup scenario, the backup software directs a disk array to send data directly from the disk to a backup device (disk or tape) over a SAN. The backup data never travels over a SAN, through the application server, or even through the backup media server. VERITAS and HP have integrated the capabilities of the NetBackup software with HP’s SureStore Disk Array XP supporting HP’s Direct Backup Engine.

Disk-to-disk-to-tape (Mezzanine) Backups
Disk-to-disk backups accelerate backup process time and create disk-based images for rapid recoveries. However, most organizations need tape backups for disaster recovery and
long-term data retention needs. HP offers a two-stage or “mezzanine” backup using SATA-based disk storage for the
disk-based backup repository.
HP has tested and validated the mezzanine backup solution with both VERITAS NetBackup and VERITAS Backup Exec.

Sharing Tape Libraries
You’ve invested in an HP SureStore Tape Library, now you want to share it between several applications without worrying about conflicts. NetBackup Shared Storage Option and Backup Exec Shared Storage Option allow individual HP tape drives –standalone or in an automated tape library –to be shared among multiplatform backup servers.
The Shared Storage option lets you share tape libraries or individual drives between multiple backup clients.

So many applications, so little time
The amount of data
under management is growing rapidly, and somehow
you’ve got to back it all up. For some applications, backup
windows are problematic or non-existent.
In some cases, recovering data from tape isn’t rapid
enough for critical applications. But tape is necessary
for disaster recovery and long-term archival purposes.
Deploying distinct, point solutions to address each
application requirement only increases IT complexity. How
can you meet all of the different levels of data protection
needs without adding administrative complexity?

Fast, VSS snapshot-based backups
VERITAS offers two powerful backup solutions on the Windows platform; NetBackup and Backup Exec. Both are tightly integrated with the Windows operating environment, and offer application-specific backups for Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL Server. When integrated with the Storage Foundation for Windows, these products can perform backups from point-in-time snapshots using the Microsoft Virtual Shadow copy Service (VSS). Snapshot-based backups eliminate the backup window.
