Emily Carr University is pleased to provide employees a comprehensive benefit package. The benefits plans are designed with the continuing health and well-being of our staff and their families in mind and are an important part of the full compensation package. The information outlined in this handout is intended to provide a general overview of benefits provided to employees and further information is available in your Collective Agreement.

WHAT YOUR PLAN INCLUDES
Medical Services Plan (MSP)
(operated by Health Insurance BC)Medical Services Plan insures medically required services provided by physicians and supplementary health care practitioners, laboratory services and diagnostic procedures. * PharmaCare is a program within MSP that subsidizes eligible prescription drugs and designated medical supplies, protecting British Columbians from high drug costs. Please ensure you (and your dependants) are registered with PharmaCare and keep the registration number for future reference.

Extended Health Benefits
Desjardins Financial Security provides your Extended Health Benefits, call 1-800-263-1810 or visit www.desjardinsfinancialsecurity.com for customer service.
• Pays for 100% of eligible expenses with no deductible; • Prescription drugs;
• Emergency transportation; • Accidental dental benefits;
• Semi private and private room in a public general hospital;
• Hearing aids, repairs or replacement parts up to $500 once every 3 years;
• Combined maximum of $1,000 per calendar year for: physiotherapist, chiropractor, podiatrist, chiropodist, osteopath, naturopath, homeopath, registered kinesiologist, speech therapist/pathologist, registered massage therapist or licensed clinical psychologist/master of social work/registered clinical counselor (phone Desjardins to ensure your therapist is covered);
• $500 per calendar year for acupuncturist; • Private duty nursing to a maximum of $10,000; • Orthotics to a maximum of $400 per calendar year;
• Travel benefits (including International travel) within first 180 days per trip to maximum of $1,000,000 per calendar year for Emergency services; and $50,000 per calendar year for Referral Service. When traveling, have your Desjardins ID card with you as the contact phone numbers are on the back of it. Desjardins must be contacted within 48 hours of when treatment commences.
• For expenses over $300, it is recommended that a predetermination of benefits be submitted to Desjardins before your treatment begins to establish what your portion of the cost will be.
Dental Benefits
Desjardins Financial Security provides your Dental Benefits. • There is no deductible.
• Pays 50% of Major Services (including dentures, crowns and bridges) once every 5 years with yearly maximum of $5,000 per person.
• Pays 50% for Orthodontic Services for you and your dependents up to a lifetime maximum of $2,000. • Reimbursement is based on the Provincial Dental Fee Guide for reasonable and customary services. • For work other than Basic Services, it is recommended that a predetermination of benefits be submitted to
Desjardins before your treatment begins to establish what your portion of the cost will be.
Vision Care
Desjardins Financial Security also provides your Vision Care Benefits.
• $75.00 towards an eye examination by a license optometrist or ophthalmologist
• $500 every 24 months for prescription eye glasses and/or medically necessary contact lenses
Note for Extended Health, Dental and Vision Coverage: If you or your dependents also have coverage with another carrier (such as a spouse or partner who has coverage through their work), claims will be co-ordinated so that reimbursement from all coverage will not exceed 100% of the actual claim. A Coordination of Benefits form must be completed if you have coverage elsewhere.
Sick Leave (Short-Term Disability)
All permanent employees will be paid by the University, one hundred percent (100%) of salary for the first ninety (90) days of any one continuous illness, injury or disability.
FGI Disability Management
The Disability Management program, provided by FGI, is in place to ensure that employees receive the support and care required for their specific condition should an illness or injury occur. Any absence from work greater than five consecutive days in duration and due to an illness or injury to the employee may be referred to FGI for assistance. All absences fourteen days or more in duration will automatically be referred to FGI. Please refer to the Disability Management Program Guide for details of how the program works.
Long Term Disability
Desjardins Financial Security also provides Long Term Disability benefits. The employee pays the premiums for this benefit.
In the event of a disability, Long Term Disability benefits provide a non- taxable income of 60% of monthly earnings to a maximum benefit of $8000, after an elimination period of ninety (90) days. Benefits continue until age 65 or recovery, whichever is earlier.
Group Life Insurance
Desjardins Financial Security provides your basic Group Life Insurance.
Voluntary Group Life Insurance
Desjardins offers optional life insurance coverage that is in addition to what is already provided. This benefit entitlement is at the discretion of the employee and therefore an employee paid benefit.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
Desjardins Financial Security provides your basic AD&D insurance.
Pays your beneficiary a sum of three (3) times your annual earnings up to a maximum of $300,000. This is payable in addition to the group life insurance if caused by an accident. Also lump sum settlements repayable if an accident results in the loss of a bodily member such as an arm, or leg, speech or hearing.
Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
Desjardins offers an optional accidental death and dismemberment insurance plan that is in addition to what is already provided. This benefit entitlement is at the discretion of the employee and therefore an employee paid benefit.
College Pension Plan
All full-time employees must participate in the College Pension Plan. Part-time employees become eligible after completing 2 years continuous service with Emily Carr University and have maintain a certain salary during that period. Enrollment for part-time employees is optional and if the employee chooses not to enroll, a waiver must be signed.
Both you and the University contribute to the College Pension Plan. The College Pension Plan is a defined benefit plan. This means your pension is based on how many years you make contributions to the plan and the average of your highest five years of salary. It is not based on your contributions to the plan or on the performance of the Plan’s assets. Depending on the options, the Plan provides a regular lifetime income after retirement for plan members. Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
If you should need professional, confidential assistance for you and your family call FGI at 1-800-268-5211. EAP is a voluntary, confidential, short-term counseling and advisory service that connects you and your family to a network of dedicated professionals who are available to give you assistance 24 hours a day.

Death Benefit
In the event of the death of an employee with at least one year of service, the University shall pay to the beneficiary, one month’s salary exclusive of any amount already earned by the deceased (see Article 10.16 in the Support Staff collective agreement).
