From Fr. Mark’s Desk:

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time:

“I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in

the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat

it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread

will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

The first memory I have of a ending Mass was as St. Kilian on 87

th

street. My parents were

faithful about the importance of a ending Mass. They both believed in the graces that came

from a ending and from receiving the Eucharist. My First Holy Communion at St. Thomas

More would accentuate that experience for me. I have always believed in the words of Jesus,

‘I am the Bread of Life’. That life is the life of the Church and the life of each of our individual

lives. In the Church, it is the celebra on of the Eucharist, the Mass, that is central to its life.

The Eucharist is what feeds and sustains. The Mass always has Jesus Christ as the center. The

Mass is the place where heaven and earth come together, ‘full of His glory’. The Eucharist is

the primary source of salva on and the forgiveness of sin; “Lamb of God, you take away the

sins of the world, have mercy on us. The Eucharist gives us the spiritual energy ‘to go and

make disciples of all na ons’.

In the Eucharist we find the grace to ‘feed the hungry and give water to the thirsty’. The

Eu-charist is the food of our spiritual life as individuals. ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ is the

prayer in which we admit that we need God to survive. Those who eat this bread will surely

live, those who do not will surely die.

So, some days, when life gets hec c, I remember si ng at St. Kilian, thinking about the

im-portance of that ini al encounter of the Mass, and how crucial it is to me and to us all.

LOVE IN OUR WORK

In this Gospel, the love that Jesus reveals through the symbol of bread is: self-giving, sacrificial, heal-ing, forgivheal-ing, in solidarity with the weak, confident in the power of God.

During the hot summer months many of the el-derly, especially those who are sick, are not able to find relief from the heat. Please help the Socie-ty of St. Vincent de Paul to bring respite and hope to them. ©svdpusa.org

We are always looking for new members or volunteers. Leave your name and number

Most of us find it a challenge to find a place for quiet time in our home to pray. St. Therese of Avila, in her writ-ings, admonishes us to get to prayer at whatever the cost may be because that in itself receives the Lord’s graces. Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus: Song of Heaven

The words of the Sanctus are rooted in the scrip-tures. They recall the song of the seraphim in the prophet Isaiah’s vision of God in majesty: “Seraphim were sta oned above; each of them had six wings: with two they veiled their faces, with two they veiled their feet, and with two they hovered alo . ‘Holy, holy, holy is the L of hosts!’ they cried one to the other. ‘All the earth is filled with his glory!’ ” (Isaiah 6:2-3). They recall the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem: “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest” (Ma hew 21:9). Yet the liturgy adds something new to these ancient texts. The seraphim sang, “the earth is filled with his glory.” But the liturgy proclaims, “heaven and earth are full of your glory.” In the Eucharist, earth and heaven meet. For a moment in me, we join in the song that the angels sing for all me. The Sanctus raises us to heaven, but does not remove us from the earth. It is the song of the King who took on our human flesh so that we might share in his divine life. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CIVIL DISCOURSE

“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.” These words bring us up short! What could we be doing to grieve the Holy Spirit? Alas, the same things that the Ephesians were doing in the time of Paul, that is, fighting, shouting, reviling each other with fury, an-ger, and malice. Just tune in to talk radio some day or observe some “road rage” on the expressway. If we who are partakers of the Body of Christ can treat one another this way, what does that mean about our be-lief in Christ’s message of peace and reconciliation? The Eucharist is the sacrament of unity. It is com-munion with God and with each other. A good first step would be to speak civilly to each other, even in disagreement! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Stewardship…

Have you ever taken a moment to figure out how much time, on the average, you spend a week volun-teering in your church or in your community?

“Do not neglect good deeds and generosity. God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind.” (Hebrews 3:16) Have you ever taken some time to figure out what percentage of your income goes to the church and other charitable causes?

Stewardship is planned giving and does not leave giving to chance. It challenges us to plan. It asks us to appraise—deliberately—what we are doing with out time, our talent and our treasure.
