Rational Developer for Power (RDp) Trial –
Download and Installation Instructions
Notes
• You should complete the following instructions using Internet Explorer or Firefox with Java enabled.
• You should disable virus software during the installation process as well.
• The installation example below follows a scenario where no other Eclipse instances, package groups or products are installed on the target machine. It is acceptable to install RDp on a machine where these other Eclipse artifacts exist, but some of the pictures in the following instructions may look slightly different (reflecting the other Eclipse artifacts on your machine).
• Total Time Required: Approximately 1 hour with a broadband connection.
Download and Setup
To begin, visit this URL: http://www.ibm.com/software/rational/products/rdp
1. FIRST, please review the “Systems Requirements” link on that page to ensure that you have an appropriate machine to run Rational Developer for Power Systems Software (RDp). The more disk space, processor power and RAM you have, the better RDp will perform.
Download and installation will consume approximately 1 GB of space from your hard drive.
BEFORE BEGINNING, we recommend you have at least 15% of your hard drive’s total capacity (at least 15 GB) free and available.
2. Installation Manager Setup –
On the next page, scroll down until you see the “Evaluate” tab (make sure it is selected). Click the button to the right of the Windows, Linux version to download.
3. On the next page, sign in using your IBM ID. (If you do not already have an IBM ID, there is a link on this page to register for one. The process is quick and free. An IBM ID is necessary to access a number of free IBM resources, including DeveloperWorks content and access to forums and communities.)
5. On the next page (IBM Installation Manager for Trial and Beta Products), you have the option to download with the IBM Download Director (an efficient and fast java applet) or through simple http protocol. These instructions will walk through the Download Director path.
Make sure the tab named “Download using Download Director” is selected. Check the box for the operating system you are using (these instructions show the Windows version). Click the “Download now” button at the bottom of the page.
After the Download Director starts, select an appropriate directory to receive the files and click the “OK” button.
Download Director will start file transfer and report progress along the way.
Files will extract and the IBM Installation Manager will start.
NOTE: During this time, your firewall software may post a message requesting access to the internet on behalf of the installation program. Check the box to “Remember my answer…” and click the “Yes” button. Sometimes this message may not come to the top of the window display (if you have been using your mouse or keyboard for other tasks during the download process). If you notice the “IBM Installation Manager” splash screen (pictured above) paused for more than 60 seconds, look for a firewall message on your task bar or other locations.
Click the “Next” button to continue
8. On the License Agreement screen, accept the license agreement (with the radio button in the bottom left) and click the “Next” button again.
When the setup process for Installation Manager is done, click the button in the bottom right to restart Installation Manager and begin the RDp setup process.
10. RDp Setup Process –
When Installation Manager restarts, you should see the splash screen appear. Installation Manager will need to connect to the IBM server to download the RDp files required.
11. On the initial screen, review the package to make sure it reads “IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software”. Click the “Next” button in the lower right corner.
12. On the next screen, read the note and make sure no other programs are running, and temporarily disable virus software. Click the “Next” button when you’re ready to proceed. 13. On the License Agreement screen, select the radio button to accept the agreement, and click the
“Next” button.
15. On the “Package Groups” screen, accept the defaults and click the “Next” button. 16. On the “Translations” screen, accept the defaults and click the “Next” button. 17. On the “Features to Install” screen, accept the defaults and click the “Next” button. 18. On the “Help System” screen, accept the defaults and click the “Next” button. 19. On the “Summary” screen, click the “Install” button.
Installation Manager will begin downloading the RDp install files and will report progress in the lower left area of the screen. Time to complete will vary with the speed of your network connection.
When the process is complete, you will get a message announcing the installation of the RDp packages.
Click the “Finish” button to complete the process. Re-enable your antivirus software.
Although not strictly required, we recommend rebooting your system at this time.
20. Initialize RDp –
In Windows, go to the “Start” menu and select: All Programs
IBM Software Delivery Platform
IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software V8.5 IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software
You will see the splash screen appear and RDp will take several minutes to initialize and start.
The splash screen will report the progress as RDp runs for the first time. This may take a few more minutes.
21. RDp will perform a license key check every time you run it. This version installs with a “trial” license that will allow you to run RDp for a limited amount of time (several weeks). At the end of the evaluation period, RDp will not run until you install a permanent license key.
Like all Rational software, a valid license is required to run the software on a permanent basis. Please talk with your authorized reseller for more information on Rational software.
22. The first time you run RDp in a new workspace (see step 20), it starts with the “Welcome” view. You can review the information and explore the help or tutorial system if you wish.
The “Welcome” view closes and the main workbench of RDp is displayed.
