RSVP Volunteer Recognition, Community Forum, and Public Hearing October 3, 2019

LIVING LONGER WITH BETTER OPTIONS

T

his year, we’re very excited to again celebrate our amazing, dedicated, and delightful volunteers enrolled in the RSVP volunteer program. RSVP provides countless hours of service to Genesee County agencies and citizens, improving quality of life in our community and benefiting host agencies.

On October 3rd, please do join us as we offer three opportunities for everyone:

The very special volunteer recognition noted above;

A presentation by leaders from UMMC and YMCA on the proposed Healthy Living Campus Senior Center. Get your questions answered and offer your feedback;

Office for the Aging’s proposed 2020 budget plan. Provide your input and comments. As of September 1st, the proposed budget will be posted on our county’s website at: https://

www.co.genesee.ny.us/departments/office_for_the_aging/nyconnects/document_library.php The document is entitled “2020 Proposed Budget and Department Review”. Hard copies will also be available at our first floor front desk at 2 Bank Street.

We value the members of our community. We need your input in order to best serve you, your family, your friends, and your neighbors. Each day, we encounter people facing challenges as they get older, particularly if they did not prepare for unforeseen circumstances. If we don’t understand what you are facing, we won’t be prepared to help you. Challenges can be so much easier to manage if a plan is in place.

Please join us. Help us celebrate volunteers, hear about the new Healthy Living Campus and provide your input. Let us know how we’re doing and how we could do better. See inside this issue for the flyer with more details on this important event.

I hope to see you there!

Program

T

he following information was obtained from the Federal Communications Commission.

After Storms, Watch Out for Scams Scammers always look for new victims.

Unfortunately, natural disasters and severe weather create opportunities for fraud in their wake, when people are at their most vulnerable.

Fake Flood Insurance Robocalls

Following hurricanes, fraudsters have used caller ID spoofing and robocall technology to target residents of areas hit by the storm with scam calls about flood insurance. If you receive this type of call, before giving out any personal information or agreeing to any payment, you should independently verify that the call is legitimate. Contact your insurance agent or your insurance company directly. Policyholders with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP Direct) can call 1-800-638-6620. To report suspected fraud, call the FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline tool free at 1-866-720-5721.

Disaster Relief Charity Scams

In addition to the flood insurance scam, consumers everywhere should be aware of scammers posing as representatives of charities seeking donations for disaster relief. There are several steps you can take to protect yourself from this type of fraud:

Donate to a trusted, well-known charities.

Beware of scammers who create fake charities during natural disasters. Always verify a charity’s legitimacy through its official website. If you have doubts, you can check with the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance (http://

www.bbb.org/charity).

Verify all phone numbers for charities. If you need to contact a charity by phone, verify through the charity’s official website that the number you have is legitimate.

Do not open suspicious emails. If you receive a suspicious email requesting donations or other assistance, do not click on any links or open any attachments. Scammers regularly use email for phishing attacks and to spread malware.

Be skeptical of social media posts.

Independently verify any solicitation for charitable donations before you give. If you’re using text-to-donate, check the number with the charity first.

Finally, watch out for scammers impersonating federal, state, tribal and municipal authorities. If someone calls claiming to be a government official, hang up and call the number listed on that government agency’s website. Never reveal any personal information until you’ve confirmed you’re dealing with a legitimate official. Also, all workers and agents who knock on doors of residences are required to carry official identification and to show it upon request. They also never ask for nor accept money.

Lifespan offers presentations and assistance on fraud, scams and identity theft. Call Karen at (585) 259-2781 of Lifespan’s Financial Management Assistance program, a Muriel H. Marshall funded service providing free in-home assistance with budgeting and bill paying service.

Nutrition Notes PARSNIPS

Submitted by: Ellen Foster, Registered Dietitian

R

oot vegetables are the edible underground parts of vegetables. Some well known root vegetables are beets, carrots, rutabaga, parsnips, and turnips. Others which are actually tubers but are often thought of as root vegetables are potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, garlic, and shallots. Interestingly, parsnips are not only related to carrots,

but also to the non- root foods of parsley and celery.

The wild parsnip is not edible but cultivation has produced a sweet, aromatic root that looks much like a carrot, only it is a tan color with white flesh.

Today’s parsnips have a sweet nutty flavor and were actually

used as a sweetener until the development of the sugar beet in the 19th century.

A fresh parsnip will have a buttery-soft texture when cooked, but an old parsnip will be fibrous and bitter.

The whiter ones tend to be the most tender, and should be firm like a carrot.

Parsnips can be cooked like carrots and will make a colorful addition to your plate when combined with carrots. Also, like carrots, parsnips should be scrubbed rather than peeled; but unlike the carrot, overcooking can turn them to mush. So cook your carrots and parsnips separately, then combine when ready to serve.

Nutritionally, parsnips are a good source of fiber, having more per serving than a lot of ready-to-eat cereals. They also contain folate, magnesium, iron, potassium, Vitamins C, E, and B6, calcium, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin.

Parsnips are a traditional American vegetable, particularly around Thanksgiving, but they are also popular in England, France, Scandinavia, Hungary, and Holland, and are harvested there throughout the fall and winter months. Those harvested after the first early frost have the sweetest flavor.

They will keep for weeks if properly stored in a very cool place. Store them in a plastic bag and place in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator set between 0°C and 5°C. Do not put raw parsnips in the freezer compartment.

While usually served cooked, raw parsnips add a unique sweet taste to salads, coleslaw, and toppings. Cut them julienne style, grate them, or pulse diced raw parsnips briefly in a food processor.

Just a reminder—before making lifestyle changes, including dietary changes, please consult your primary care physician.

re you a friendly and social person? Do you enjoy conversation with others? Are you aware that there are individuals within our Genesee County area who so enjoy conversation, and a friendly visit but are unable to get out of their home as they once did? Did you know that there is a program called The Home Visitation Program that is supported by the Muriel H.

Marshall Fund? This amazing fund provides financial resources, administered by Catholic Charities, as one of its ways to help older adults remain independent, involved and With the goal to Age In Place. Our Home Visitation Program provides volunteers for individuals who are socially isolated to have a “friend” come into their home and visit once a week for an hour or so. There is no fee for this service.

You might be wondering why I posed the questions of "Are you social, friendly, Do you enjoy conversation?" Answer is!! We need you! Our Home Visitation Program currently has men and women throughout Genesee County who are eagerly waiting for friendly visitors. We make every effort possible to match veterans with veterans. Your personality, interests and area of willingness to travel in Genesee County are all taken into consideration as we pair you up. What do you say?
