Lāna’i Community Health Center Job Description

JOB TITLE: MEDICAL ASSISTANT

Reports to: Medical Director

FLSA: Non-Exempt/Hourly

JOB OVERVIEW: Facilitates the successful operation of the Lanai Community Health Center and carries out assigned Medical Assistant

responsibilities; might also need to assist with Front Desk Rep responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical, Medical Assistant Responsibilities

1. See Medical Assistant Skills Checklist; MA Work Flow; TB Testing Document

2. Know the scope of practice of the Medical Assistant, for knowing and following clinical policy and procedure, charting and other paperwork, and in providing all aspects of patient care, patient interviews, and preparation of patients for provider assessment and treatment;

3. Know the roles and responsibilities of other team members at the LCHC facility;

4. Complete intake interview and reports to providers according to established procedure; 5. Perform screenings per provider guidelines and assisting providers with various procedures; 6. Prepare patients for examinations consistent with the purpose of the appointment;

7. Assist providers with examinations of patients or any special procedures; 8. Implement principles of aseptic and sterile technique, and infection control;

9. Practice Universal Precautions, including hand washing before and after each patient and disposal of biohazards materials; 10. Perform supervised laboratory procedures approved by the Medical Director;

11. Perform screening tests as ordered by provider including vision, audiometry, EKG, pulse Ox;

12. Clean and straighten exam rooms, and ensure all exam rooms are prepared for pt visits; disinfect exam room tables, treatment and lab surfaces daily; empty trash cans daily or as needed;

13. Administer treatments including, nebulizer, oral medications, vaccines at the direction of the provider; 14. Perform procedures including ear irrigation, simple dressing changes, all at the direction of the provider;

15. MA in charge of inventory will order in conjunction with finance medical supplies as needed, at the

direction of the Medical Director;

16. MA in charge of inventory will order in conjunction with finance immunizations as needed, and at the direction of the Medical Director; 17. Order medication and maintain medication inventory, at the direction of the Medical Director;

18. Review meds for expiration dates; separate those meds that have expired and dispose appropriately, at the direction of the Medical Director; 19. Maintain a current medication list for providers;

20. Communicate need for drug refills;

21. Fulfill clerical responsibility as assigned which may include: assist FD with sending/receiving patient medical records; call to obtain lab/x-ray reports, manage charts to ensure information is complete, accurate, and filed appropriately. Maintain currency of past and present vaccination records in eCW.

Clinical, Medical Assistant Laboratory Responsibilities

1. At the direction of the provider, obtain specimens from patients, ensuring proper identification of patient and specimen; label and store specimens appropriately;

2. At the direction of the provider, perform the following laboratory tests including: Urine Pregnancy, Urinalysis dip, Blood glucose, Hemoglobin and Strep test;

6. Implement blood borne pathogen safety measures at all times-- Wear Gloves! 7. File laboratory requisitions appropriately, as directed by Medical Director.

8. Review patients’ charts and note if lab results or other diagnostic tests have been received; give all results to provider in preparation of office visit.

General Fundamentals

1. Ensure patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations are followed.

2. Be able to employ cultural and linguistic approaches necessary to communicate effectively with patients.

3. Ensures compliance with Lana`i Community Health Center policy and procedures as outlined in the Lana`i Community Health Center Employee Handbook.

4. Keeps informed of and complies with all occupational safety guidelines. Takes all reasonable precautions to prevent accidental injury on the job.

5. Participates in staff meetings and conferences and attends all training sessions as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE

1. Knowledge of universal precautions;

2. Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications, and tests;

3. Knowledge of proper use and maintenance of all equipment, including: digital scale, anthropometric measuring tool, vital signs machine, glucometer, Hemocue machine, EKG unit; spirometer; temporal artery thermometer;

4. Knowledge of current Medical Assistant and phlebotomy practices.

SKILLS

1. Skill in utilizing critical thinking to identify problems, research and recommend resolutions; 2. Skill in utilizing critical thinking to exercise initiative, judgment, discretion and decision-making; 3. Skill in maintaining department quality assurance;

4. Skill in following appropriate testing procedures; 5. Skill in proper equipment use;

7. Phlebotomy certification is encouraged.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

• High school diploma or equivalent required

• Medical Assistant certification required, or equivalent experience. Must demonstrate required MA competencies or be willing to learn MA competencies on the job, and then demonstrate skill level.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Completion of Certified Medical Assistant training program or equivalent training/experience; • Completion of CHC skill assessment for MA’s checklist;

• Current Basic Life Support Card; • Non-judgmental attitude;

• Ability to implement and utilize standards of ethics, morals and trust with all members of LCHC and patients; • Ability to multi-task;

• Ability to implement HIPAA rules and regulations of patient confidentiality; • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;

• Ability to work as a member of a team; • Ability to communicate clearly and fairly;

• Willingness to work a flexible schedule when circumstances necessitate; • Willingness to accept the philosophy, purpose, and ideals of the organization; • Ability to use a wide range of office machines including personal computers

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

• Ability to perform basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

• Ability to read and record anthropometric measures.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form. Ability to define problems collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

• Person of mature character, sound judgment, trustworthy, and a caring nature

• Person knowledgeable and understanding of the diverse cultural appropriateness of the individuals and families in the community • Person with the desire to serve the community

• Person who is able to communicate clearly and tactfully with others, prepare written reports and other necessary communications in a professional manner

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Certification as a Medical Assistant is preferred; similar work experience may be accepted..

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical Demands include lifting, bending, reaching, pushing, carrying, sitting, vision corrected in normal range, hearing corrected in normal range. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. There is potential risk of exposure to infectious diseases; and potential exposure to physical violence. This position requires close contact with sick people. As the job includes multiple duties, the employee must be able to work under conditions of constant interruption and b able to stay on task.

Access to Patient Information shall be limited to only those persons needing such information in order to perform the specific duties of their job (such as direct patient care, patient billing or quality assurance review).

Whenever possible and reasonable, physical documents will be covered and/or kept from sight of all persons not directly involved in a patient’s activities (such as described above). When accessing Patient Information via computer, take appropriate steps to ensure that your screen is not easily visible to other patients and non-involved employees. Whenever you are not in your work area, take steps to ensure that no patient information is left unattended.
