The Social Sciences Division has several files servers allocated to departments and research units. Below is a list of all the file server addresses. Please make note of the address of your file server for this tutorial. In most cases your file server will correlate with the department you are affiliated with. If you are unsure which file server address to use please contact one of the local IT staff for support. Contact information is listed at the end of this document.
Also please note that this connection method only works on the UCSC campus network via eth-ernet connection or Wireless using the EDUROAM network (does not work on cruznet). To con-nect off-campus on Windows please refer to our SFTP tutorial.

Step 1) From the desktop of your computer right click on the “Computer” icon (Windows 7) or “My Computer” icon (Windows XP) and choose “Map Network Drive...” as shown here:
Step 2) The Map Network Drive wizard will start. Select a letter for the drive in the first drop-down. I recommend a letter lower in the alphabet (e.g. W, X, Y, Z). This will keep the drive letter unique and not overlap ever with CD-ROM or USB drives you may plug into the machine. In the “Folder:” field either type the address for your personal or shared server space (both listed at the start of this document). In this example I entered what a politics Professor or Staff member would type in: \\poli-files.ucsc.edu\yourcruzid\ for demonstrative purposes.
If you want the server to automatically connect when the computer turns on, check “Reconnect at Login”. This is ONLY recommended if you have a secure password on your computer since the machine being turned on will also request access to the server:
Step 3) You will be prompted for a username and password. Please enter them and click “OK”. You may choose to store the password by checking the “Remember my credentials” box, but this is not recommended for security purposes.
Note: Your ID on the file server is the same as your UCSC ID, However your password is man-aged by a separate system. This password will be delivered to you by UCSC campus mail or handed to you by department / local IT staff.
If your username and password are accepted then the server volume will open automatically open for easy drop-and-drop use.
Note: Once connected, a shortcut to the file server will be listed in the main “Computer” section of the Windows OS under “Network Location”:
Tip: For ease of use, you can create a shortcut to the server from this same window to shorten the connection process in the future. To do this, simply right-click on the volume name and choose “Create Shortcut”. This will place a shortcut on your desktop to the server and only re-quire you to enter your username and password in the future (rather than go through the entire “Map A Network Drive” process):
