Sponsorship

Many employers are willing to sponsor their staff to undertake an MBA. The benefits for employers can be substantial and we’ve written a brief guide for sponsoring employers.

It’s worth discussing sponsorship with your manager or HR department. Prepare a brief business case so they can see what your new qualification will bring to your organisation. Annual appraisals or the drawing up of personal development plans can be a good trigger for discussing undertaking an MBA and the possibility of sponsorship.

Sponsors can pay all your fees or just a percentage and we are happy to receive your fee payments from more than one source.

Some employers aren’t able to offer financial sponsorship but can offer a wide range of other support such as study leave or access to company resources, so it’s always worth discussing your plans to study with your manager.

Other sources of funding

If you own your own home and live in the UK you may be eligible for a UK Government-sponsored Career Development Loan. Students intending to study in the UK and to use the results of their study for work in the UK or elsewhere in the EU are also eligible.

HSBC Postgraduate Banking and Professional Loans offer special loan rates and deals for students to finance the MBA programme.

International students

British Council Chevening Scholarships are administered by the British Council and are currently available in more than 100 countries around the world.

American MBA applicants with a minimum 3.5 GPA may be eligible for the Fulbright Award.

The Surrey MBA – Information for sponsors

Many MBA candidates approach their employers

for financial support, or sponsorship, to help pay their tuition fees. Some employers pay the entire amount whilst others opt to pay a percentage of the fees. A recent survey from the Graduate Management Admissions Council has shown that worldwide, up to 75% of employers are currently considering hiring staff with MBAs. However many organisations could make a cost saving by sponsoring existing employees to study rather than recruiting new staff.

The benefits of sponsoring an employee’s studies can be substantial and we’ve explained some of them here along with information about how your organisation can make the most of the experience.

Benefits for your organisation:

• Surrey MBA students develop new skills they can put into action straight away;

• Assignments and research can be based around your organisation, so your staff can address current issues with the support of leading business academics;

• Surrey MBA students graduate with a greater understanding of how the whole organisation works, making them more useful, flexible employees; and

• Established links with the University of Surrey will give you access to business events, contacts in research and consultancy and a source of future recruitment from high calibre students.

(14)

Benefits for you as an employer

Sponsorship can be a reward for employees and a useful part of your retention strategy, helping you to keep the best people in your team. Many employers encourage staff to undertake MBAs to support their succession planning. Developing your own staff can be more cost effective than bringing in new hires to fill skill and experience gaps.

Surrey MBA graduates often talk of their increased confidence and how personal skills have been developed alongside professional ones. Employers and colleagues comment on their renewed

enthusiasm and positive influence in the workplace.

Why the Surrey MBA?

• The Surrey MBA is one of only a handful to carry accreditation from both the Association of MBAs and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

• Our rigorous academic programme produces confident business leaders equipped to manage in a complex and changing enironment.

• Our academics are at the forefront of current research and have extensive industry experience.

• The Surrey MBA is available as a full time one year course or as a part-time Executive MBA, delivered over two years with teaching happening at monthly residential weekends. The Executive MBA is specifically designed for those who wish to study whilst they work. • Sharing experiences and building networks

is an important part of the Surrey MBA, our students leave with a useful personal business network.

Making the most of your employee’s studies

Most employers find they benefit from their employees studies almost immediately as new skills and knowledge are brought into the workplace. Offering them opportunities to share this learning with colleagues can spread the benefits across the organisation.

Throughout their studies MBA students are asked to draw on personal experiences and often use assignments to tackle ‘live’ issues in their organisation. Giving them access to senior colleagues, information and other resources

will make this an even more valuable experience for you.

All Surrey MBA students take part in an Action Learning Consultancy project. In small teams, and with the support of industry experts from within the Surrey Business School, they research and suggest solutions to a key issue for an organisation, effectively offering a free consultancy service. Any organisation, including those with staff on the MBA programme, can register to participate.
