October Gathering

Well it was great being back in our usual gathering place, with lots of space for our banner, projector and of course our Mas-cot Alf as he is perched above us all. CD Richie Aylward opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Richie announced an update on Bill Reich-ling and his condition. As everyone is aware Bill has been in the hospital since September preparing for a bone marrow transplant treating his Leukemia. Unfortu-nately, Bill has been suffering due to a He-matoma he developed while a biopsy test was performed. This has been very uncom-fortable and he is in quite a lot of pain. Bill and Linda have told us that Bill will be in the hospital about a month and hopes to come home mid October but will still be housebound as his immune system is com-promised. Linda is sleeping at the hospital to help Bill since he can not walk and movement is painful. Nice going Linda. Hurry back Bill and Linda we are looking forward to your return.

As many of the members know our Treas-urer Robert and Lorraine Ingenito have stepped down from the Chapter Treasur-er’s position and Jaime Alston has gracious-ly volunteered to fill that position, thank you Jaime.

October Gathering

Important announcement; Officers Certification Program Training is being offered on Long Island, NY. This is a great opportunity for all members of GWRRA to learn about all the practices and procedures that drive our wonderful association. How we differ from “Motorcycle Clubs” and why certain procedures are in place to go forward with “Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge”. Don’t forget to pre-register for this training so that we can forward you the “Student Workbook” and “Officers Handbook” and assist in preparing you for this training.

Chapter N hosted the NY District Ride Out September Ride-Out up in Lake George area. Phil Genova told us a little about the bike tour he chose and the BBQ and how much fun it all was. Linda Torres and Jaime Al-ston also said they had a really nice time.

Our Chapter Educator, Rob Bellassi was on a Caribbean Cruise down South, so Leadership Trainer, Claire Aylward presented a seminar on “Listening and Communication”. The key word here is “Listening”, hearing is automatic but listening is by choice and if you are not listening you are not really hearing the message being offered to you. Everyone present at this seminar received credit for this seminar on their GWRRA Personal Training Record.

Ride Coordinators Jaime and Linda discussed upcoming events. Members put on your thinking caps and think of where you want to ride to next year 2014. Certain rides are already scheduled to attend all the many won-derful District Conventions put on by our surrounding states within our Region B. The members discussed the upcoming weekends rides and activities; Oyster FestIval in Oyster Bay, NY and a ride out east. Watch your emails for ride alerts. The Moose Lodge in Greenlawn, NY is holding a Charity Event (St Jude’s Chil-dren’s Hospital) Halloween Party Saturday, October 26th and have invited us to join them. There will be a buffet, music, raffles and prizes for the best costume. Pre-paid tickets are $20.00pp and at the door the tick-ets are $30.00pp. The members said they thought a party would be nice. So we will post a email with the de-tails and to see who wants to come.

Get your shirt orders in, Claire is placing an order this week, it will be a small order but Richie Aylward will order some of his company’s shirts to increase our quantity for a better price. At this gathering many of the members purchased shirts and sets of the 10” back patches.

Claire Aylward handed out flyers and registrations on Maryland’s Winter Thing in January 2014 and Wing Ding 36 registration forms for the July 2014 event.

Richie ran the “are you wearing your GWRRA Chapter K patches” raffles and Jaime won. Richie and Jaime ran the 50/50 raffle and Jairo Yepes won. Chapter proceeds were $30.00.

Little Johnny — — nickels and dimes

Little Johnny is always being teased by the other

neigh-borhood boys for being stupid. Their favorite joke is to

offer Johnny his choice between a nickel and a dime --

Little Johnny always takes the nickel.

One day, after Johnny takes the nickel, a neighbor man

takes him aside and says, "Johnny, those boys are making

fun of you. Don't you know that a dime is worth more

than a nickel, even though the nickel's bigger?"

Johnny grins and says, "Well, if I took the dime, they'd

stop doing it, and so far I've made $20!"

Motorcycle Camping

Part 4 of 7 – Personal Hygiene

After a long day on the road in high temperatures, a shower or bath is essential. Most campsites have full bathroom facilities. During my trip, I used KOA campgrounds that all had clean bathroom facilities, just remember to bring some soap, a towel and flip flops some us keep your feet clean in the shower and possibly walking back to your tent.

If you take a rustic approach, you can use a stream; just make sure there are no environmental is-sues with you using soap to clean off. Make sure the soap is environmentally friendly. Use good judgment and remember to pay attention to the environmental concerns.

If you accept the simple fact that you might not have the same opportunity for cleanliness that you have at home, you can stay quite comfortable on a camping trip. I carry several water bottles with me on each ride (several are easier to pack and if one leaks, you can chuck it and still have water.) I found a plastic coated folding bucket is handy for washing people, bikes and clothes. Avoid the can-vas models as they can take a while to dry.

Also, I carried Baby Wipes and CVS brand hand wipes with me. These are damp paper towelettes, moistened with water and other soft things. They are great for a last wipe-down of arm pits and other vitals before crawling into a sleeping bag, are in a rush to get somewhere and don’t find the time to shower or have trouble finding good bath facilities. They are also handy when using outdoor toilets. Invariably these outdoor potties have something akin to wax paper for toilet paper. Using Baby Wipes makes life easier and moisturizers/lubricants when sitting on your bike!!

Of course, you should also take a towel with you in any case. It is the single most important piece of traveling gear you can name. When using an outdoor toilet / porta potty, always tap on the seat be-fore you sit down to make sure spiders or other critter’s don’t come running out while you are on the seat!!

Stay tuned for part 5 of 7 – Camping Gear in next month’s newsletter!!

Chapter K went to the Oyster Festival, Oct 19th

Well I guess we were so busy having fun we all forgot to take pictures. The

Oysterfest was a full day of entertainment and we all walked our feet off.

Oyster Bay, NY Oyster Festival

The Oyster Festival is the East Coast’s largest waterfront festival, celebrating

its 30th year this year In 2013, offering a fun mixture of new activities and old

favorites that certainly entertain the entire family. The Oyster Festival

originat-ed as a hometown parade honoring Theodore Roosevelt before evolving into

the largest outdoor festival on Long Island. Under the auspices of the Oyster

Bay Rotary. Every year, more than 200,000 visitors flock to an late-summer

weekend on the waterfront in downtown Oyster Bay. There is live

entertain-ment, tall ships, top-notch artisans, pirate shows, midway rides and the iconic

oyster eating and shucking contest. There is also a Food Court, where

volun-teer chefs and culinary pros work side by side, cooking and serving dozens of

unique oyster, clam and other seafood concoctions along with traditional

festi-val fare.

The Oyster Festival was rated by the Long Island Press as: Best Annual Event

on Long Island 2012

Chapter K East End Ride on Long Island

October 20, 2013

Another fun ride thanks to Rob Bellassai who planned and lead us to Montauk the end of Long Island. We all had breakfast at “John’s Pancake House”. There are two breakfast spots in Montauk and both were packed with visi-tors and locals, but the wait was worth it. I (Claire) had the Crepes and they were really good. After breakfast we rode out to the Montauk Lighthouse and cruise those beautiful scenic roads that are just breath taking. Richie Aylward spoke how this is where Richie used to train for the half marathon runs for the Long Island Marathon. We learned that Rich Bullis also trained for the full Marathon, WOW we are impressed, 26 miles.

<<Hey who’s that young lady between Rob and Rich LOL! And below Ut! Oh, Claire’s looking for her money again!
