ANNUAL SCHOOL PERFORMANCE REPORT & OVERVIEW

Our School is committed to sharing aspects of our school performance with the parent/carer community. All Catholic Schools are required to prepare an Annual Report on school performance for their parents and the community each year as a requirement of the Schools Assistance Act 2008. This requirement is additional to the publication by ACARA of data on the MySchool website. With this in mind, and with our commitment to providing you with information about our school, we are pleased to present this report to you.

2020 was a year like no other with Covid – 19 affecting so much of the year. However, as you read the following report I hope you can see that we continued to provide many positive learning initiatives that characterise ours as a progressive school and an exciting learning community. We have clearly fostered in staff a belief in their own roles as leaders and gave them opportunities to exercise initiative and leadership themselves.

We have an exceptionally dedicated team of over 33 teachers, school officers and other support staff at St Joseph’s. I’m confident that all parents join me in commending and thanking them for the outstanding work they do in education and for the very many ways in which they go “above and beyond” in the service of the school.

I would like to thank and congratulate the Parents and Friends Community and the School Board for their outstanding dedication, commitment and support in 2020.

I was challenged in many aspects in 2020 but continue to consider it a privilege and honour to serve the school community in my role as Principal.

Please see attached my report. In the event and risk that I may leave someone out, I have tried not to single out individuals as I value and appreciate the contributions of all members of our community.

Principal’s Annual Report:

It is fair to say that 2020 was a year like no other, but once again, a year I am proud of what we achieved at St Joseph’s Renmark. Our whole world was changed with the COVID-19 pandemic and the responses we made as a school only highlighted the extent to which we go for our students and our community. I was so proud of the staff for their tireless efforts. We were challenged in so many ways which presented numerous feelings and emotions. The highlight was when all our staff accepted (reluctantly) to all take the same cut during the ‘stand downs’. Whilst this did not get approved, it highlighted our genuine unity and strong staff culture. I wish to sincerely thank Jeff McDonlad and Karen Trenwith for all their support and guidance during these turbulent and difficult HR issues.

Our families and students were so supportive and should be acknowledged. They were amazing through the remote learning phase as well as the subsequent ongoing changes that were made. They stayed resilient and trusted us to deliver a high quality education based on the legacy of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop.

Last year our theme was ‘Ignite your passion & purpose’, where we were asked to find the spark within which drives us to achieve our best and be our best. COVID made us revisit our purpose as educators to not only focus on the academic learning we want for our students, but also look after the social and emotional side. The new Catholic Education SA slogan of Raising Hearts and Minds reinforced that in a Catholic school it is not just about grades, but learning to love and care for all in our world.

Our school continued to grow to our largest size ever. We had more students, classes and staff than we have ever had. We welcomed 37 new Receptions and 12 other students throughout various year levels. This aligns with our plans to prepare for when we lose all the Year 6 and 7 students at the end of 2021. So, our future looks very secure and, with the knowledge that in 2022 St Francis of Assisi College will open, we now have clear pathway options for those who wish to continue a Catholic education throughout their schooling in Renmark. We have a diverse and multicultural community which embraces the strong values, relationships and culture that we promote at our school.

Our new STEAM room was completed, and we commenced having classes using this wonderful facility in the middle of the year. The room has been used each week by Mr Reeks in his Visual Arts lessons, and many classes have used the commercial kitchen with Mrs Del Zoppo as part of their Languages and Technologies lessons. We look forward to the many opportunities that it gives us in the future.

We entered the third year of our current Strategic plan, where we were able to achieve many of our goals, initiatives which included the purchase of land on Eleventh Street. Our resources, guided by our Master Plan, has allowed our school to have modern facilities, excellent maintained school grounds, contemporary learning environments and updated IT tools in every class. We are fortunate to maintain a very strong financial situation which helps with all our resourcing. As we plan for the future, our staff and School Board worked on our new three-year plan to guide our direction and priorities. We are excited to launch this in 2021.

We welcomed our new School Board Chairperson Emma Warner, who has spent many years on the P&F and represented them on the Board. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Todd van Dyk for completing his six-year tenure on the Board, with four years as the Chairperson. I would also like to thank Alex Cartwright and Mia DePalma who have shown

positive leadership in their roles as school captains this year.

Our Parents and Friends community has had a limited number of opportunities this year due to COVID, but we thank them for a great Welcome Night at the Renmark Hotel at the start of the year, as well as the support offered for things like cooking pancakes and Father’s Day and Mother’s Day stalls this year. A highlight was certainly the opportunity to have a End Of Year School Concert. I sincerely thank and congratulate Kristine DePalma and her whole team for their efforts.

Our wonderful staff have undertaken Professional Learning around Literacy and Numeracy this year, most notably the Natural Maths PD in Term 3 and many reading and writing PDs with CEO consultants. We are always looking at best practice learning for staff to increase their abilities to cater to the many different learning styles and levels of understanding that they see each day.

In Term 3 we had to say farewell to Fr Cletus who returned to Morogoro in Tanzania after spending four years in our parish. We were sad to see him go but know that he missed his family. We thank him for his service and wish him well.

We also farewelled Bishop Greg as our leader who has been significant support to our whole Port Pirie Diocese. His care and personal attention to all his schools was a particular strength. We thank Bishop Greg for all he has done and wish him a well-deserved break during retirement. As we farewelled Bishop Greg, we welcomed our new leader, Bishop Karol Kulczycki SDS. We witnessed a special event at his installation in St Mark’s Cathedral on October 28 and we look forward to following his vision for our diocese.

Finally, I thank Fr Paul and the St Therese Parish Community for helping work through a difficult year. Whilst our church was presented with many limitations and restrictions, we were able to still share some memorable events. Celebrating Year 7 Graduation, Children’s University, Confirmation and our Parish Christmas Eve Mass under our COLA were great moments of grace, prayer and community.

As I reflect and review my 10 Years as Principal, a true sense of pride, satisfaction and accomplishment has been felt. I can’t speak highly enough of each of you as members of the St Joseph’s School Community. We have all been challenged but have maintained expected standards. Our support for each other and the care for the students has been evident by all. We have all demonstrated a genuine respect and responsibility for what it means to be involved in a Catholic School.

I sincerely thank you all for your support, commitment, respect, and dedication throughout this entire year. I have embraced and enjoyed my tenth year as a Principal only because of the fantastic team that has been around me. I feel very privileged to be part of this amazing community.

School Profile:

Introduction

St Joseph's school has a proud history beginning in 1918 with the pioneering work of the sisters of St Joseph. We are a Catholic parish school which continues to value the Josephite tradition of learning and spiritual ideals. The Catholic environment is central to our school. We offer a nurturing community where children will be valued and respected, God is named and recognised and gospel values are lived out in daily life.

The Socio Economic Score for St Joseph’s is 87.0. Student Profile

Parents are required to provide a written explanation for any student absences, as well as having the opportunity to contact the school office by phone. There are well-established school practices in place that require staff to follow up any unexplained absences. Each year a number of our students travel interstate and overseas for extended periods of time to visit relatives. Staff Profile

Our staff consisted of:

The average teacher attendance rate during 2020 was 95%. This figure does not include teachers on planned long service leave or maternity leave.

The teacher retention rate from 2019 to 2020 was 98%. Professional Learning

All staff have been engaged in professional learning throughout the year. Much of this learning has been completed on pupil free days, however, there are times when teachers are absent from the classroom to engage in professional learning.

All staff at St Joseph’s School are appropriately qualified, many of them being equipped with post-graduate qualifications. Four staff are currently studying for Graduate Certificates in Catholic Education.

In 2021 we will continue to encourage all staff to engage in Professional Learning.

Faith and Spirituality:

As a Catholic School we are committed to the enhancement of Religious Education in the Catholic tradition, in response to God’s desire and mission that “all people know themselves as loved by God and as called into relationship with God, one another and all of Creation”. Our Diocesan theme for the year, “Bring Fire to the Earth” was adapted to our school theme of “Ignite your Passion and Purpose”, which was embraced as a school theme, where we looked at what we could do to ‘fire up’ the love of God in others and ourselves. This involved sharing our passions and what drives us, as well as drawing on the heritage of our school started by the Sisters of St Joseph, following in the footsteps of St Mary MacKillop. We also looked to the future of what our school could become, both in terms of faith development and re-focusing on our original purpose to provide quality education to all who need it.

Fr Paul Bourke continued to provide ministry and support to staff and students within the liturgical and spiritual life of St Joseph’s School. His friendship and support enabled us to build a vibrant faith community for our students. We also thanked Fr Cletus Mloka for his contributions to our Parish and school, as he returned to Morogoro in Tanzania.

Throughout the year students in Years Three, Four and Seven had a specific focus on the seven Sacraments, in particular Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation, as students from these year levels celebrated these Sacraments.

Members of our school community participated in daily prayer and Christian meditation within the classroom, we had one whole school Mass for Ash Wednesday before COVID, and celebrated School Liturgies for major liturgical events such as Lent and Holy Week, St Joseph’s Feast Day, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Feast Day, The Assumption and Remembrance Day, as well as having a different version of Catholic Education Week.

We continued to use the Crossways Curriculum and Made in the Image of God program as the basis of our Religious Education Curriculum. We appreciated the support of parents with these programs.

As a whole school we continue our ‘outreach’ and justice programs with the students being involved in raising funds for Caritas (through Project Compassion), Catholic Mission Charities, St Vincent de Paul Mini Vinnies and the Mary MacKillop Foundation. Throughout these fundraising events we have always been committed to students learning about caring for those in need, as well as putting our kind words into action.

Learning:

Curriculum is defined as all that is planned by a school and it is the formal curriculum that remains our core work at St Joseph’s School. This year, staff used the Australian Curriculum for planning in all Curriculum areas. This gives specific guidance to what should be the minimum content required at a specific year level.

This year NAPLAN was cancelled due to COVID-19. As a result, there is no data to report on this.

A major goal in 2020 was to support as many students as possible to participate in and enjoy sport and cultural activities in our Extra-Curricular program. This year our individual and collective successes have been numerous and while we have been delighted at these successes, we have been particularly proud of the positive sporting attitude shown by our students which was highlighted in SAPSASA involvement, although this was somewhat limited by COVID. We also held our socially distanced end of year Concert and participated in community events. St Joseph’s School delivers far more than the standard curriculum. Students in 2020 participated in fundraising activities for several charities and were involved in co-curricular programs with other district schools which included sport carnivals, the performing arts, camps and leadership camps.

Students were given numerous opportunities to reach out and support those in need with the school’s involvement in Project Compassion, Catholic Missions, Caritas and St Vincent de Paul. As a Catholic school we have continued to focus on opportunities to evangelise. The older students were involved in a Leadership Program culminating in a workshop day, Young Leaders Forums with other schools and a camp at Woodhouse in the Adelaide Hills.

Recognition of individuals and groups occurs at Parents and Friends meetings and through the newsletter. We also acknowledge the following:-

1. School Assemblies are held every three weeks, sometimes remotely via Seesaw. 2. Celebrations and achievements are also a focus of these assemblies.

3. Student leaders/school captains have held various roles this year including: welcoming and taking visitors and new enrolment families and children on tours, public speaking and, participating on behalf of the school community at invited and sporting events. All students are encouraged to have a go and are trained and supported to prepare and present, especially in school and class Masses.

4. Community responsibilities are shared amongst students; watering plants, care of resources and care of sports equipment are all weekly tasks for which students of all ages are responsible. 5. Students initiatives are encouraged. Proposals are prepared and presented to staff for consideration. eg. Year Seven student t-shirts, Challenge Cup activities and fundraising activities.

Programs: Intervention programs including reading. Catholic Culture: Liturgies, Masses, Retreats.

Arts: School Performances, individual acting positions.

Extra Curricular: Sports events, Young Leaders Day, Excursions, Mission Day and camps. Many of our learning activities were able to be shared with parents during welcome evenings, open days, assemblies, parent-teacher interviews as well as informal meetings between parents and teachers. We will continue to open our school and classrooms to others with many visitors from other schools, and the Catholic Education Office of SA, coming to observe learning in action at St Joseph’s. They are always very complimentary of our learning and wellbeing initiatives.

Wellbeing:

Wellbeing is a key strength of the St Joseph’s community. The level of care, concern and genuine love members of the community have shown towards one another has been outstanding. This is no more clearly witnessed than amongst our staff that go way above and beyond the call of duty to pastorally care for our students and families especially during Covid. 2020 has also seen the continuation of our Wellbeing Committee made up of staff and parents, whose aim is to promote wellbeing (in all its forms) within the community.

Wellbeing is integral to the learning process and a learner will engage readily with their learning when they are in an optimum state of wellbeing. In 2020 we had a lot to celebrate in this area focusing on continuing to build a positive school community that is inclusive of all and where ‘every face has a place’. Be You is designed to improve the mental health and wellbeing of our students as well as provide greater support for any students experiencing mental health difficulties. A structured and consistent Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program has been continued across the school from R-7. This has allowed for staff and students to use consistent language and phrases when dealing with issues relating to Social and Emotional Learning. These programs have been supported by teachers, our School Wellbeing Team and ESOs. We also continue to work in partnership with families and members of the wider community in order to support students.

Parent Survey

During Semester 2 of 2020 a Parent Satisfaction Survey were distributed and the results were collated. This survey is part of our reporting requirements for the Learning Assistant Act (2004). Parents were invited to reflect on the level of satisfaction with school activities.

• Although not Catholic, we appreciate and respect the values in education. It is also great for our children to learn about religion.

Enrolments at St Joseph’s remain consistent which has allowed our funding to continue to resource our school to provide the best education and care for our students. Mrs Karen Trenwith and the Finance Committee are to be commended on their management of resources.

Community Participation and Public Relations:

We acknowledge the collective student body of St Joseph’s as a vibrant, energetic group of students who bring us much pride and joy. It is a pleasure to see so many of them trying each day to be the best person they can be. Thank you to the families of our School. The support of our parents and carers is greatly valued and appreciated. I especially acknowledge all those who have helped in numerous ways throughout the year in classes, on excursions, during class activities, at school celebrations and events and at various fundraising activities.

The P&F and School Board members work hard at building community. We thank Kristine DePalma and the P&F community, Emma Warner (chair of School Board) and Adrian Hunt (chair of Buildings and Maintenance) for their untiring efforts to ensure ‘things happen’ at St Joseph’s. We need to continue to work together to support the development of our students and community.

The staff at St Joseph’s is an outstanding and committed group who spare no effort in working to provide the very best for our students. It is an honour to be a staff member in this school and I thank each staff member for their work throughout the year.

The continued growth, not only just in numbers at St. Joseph’s, reflects on the Prayers, Selfless Presence of Staff, Families and Students. It is never an accident when such fruits abound. Pope Francis often warns of the Globalization of Indifference and any Culture of Comfort. The lived awareness of God’s ongoing call and mystery in daily chores and lives is a true safeguard against such pitfalls. Virtue and Charity are infective, and such is obvious at St. Joseph’s. It is never without challenge or human frailty, but it is what we humbly share in our School environment.

Dropping by unannounced at different times and different days, allows me to pick up the Charism naturally lived; and it is always one of Welcome, Warmth and shared Wellbeing. Our Catholic Faith is the foundation of all of what is seen and experienced; and with the realities of 2020 it was simply another year of Blessed Richness in Holistic ways.

We come to a new road in 2022 with St. Francis of Assisi College and we at St. Joseph’s and our Riverland Catholic Community will become proud witnesses to this rebirth in Educational Creation. Under the banner of God’s love, we share this walk together.

Chairperson’s Board Report:

What a year 2020 has been. Firstly, I felt incredibly blessed to be nominated as the Chairperson of the board for a 2-year term, taking over from Todd van Dyk who served for 6 years. I wish to acknowledge and thank Todd for his contribution to our school community over the years during his service on the school board including his role as chairperson.

This year has seen many challenges for us all, both in the school and wider communities as we have navigated our way through the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we have worked our way through it together, with our school staff contributing countless hours in supporting students and families including preparing and planning for schooling from home. This was a tremendous effort that did not go unnoticed and was greatly appreciated by many. We are fortunate to have an amazing staff at St Joseph’s and I wish to thank each one of them for their commitment to our students and school throughout 2020.

The exciting announcement of St Francis of Assisi College in the Riverland, to be built in Renmark in 2021 and opening in 2022 has been welcome news to many. A huge amount of work has been put into this project by numerous people and it was so wonderful to hear the announcement made by Catholic Education SA.

I wish to thank my fellow board members, Parents and Friends Committee, Wellbeing Action Team and all the amazing volunteers for their dedication and commitment to our school. Without your help – in whatever way that may be – we wouldn’t be the fantastic school community that we are. Working together as a team is vital and especially with the year that has been it was even more important.

It really is an exciting time to be a member of the St Joseph’s School Renmark community, to see the continued growth, the exciting projects and what the future holds. I look forward to another wonderful year in 2021 with you all!

As challenging as 2020 has turned out to be, the P&F committee were still able to be active but in a different way.

We were lucky to have been able to organise Welcome Night for new and existing families and a disco for all the students at the start of the year, which was a great success and we were also excited for what else we could plan for to get our school community engaged & interacting in fun ways, but unfortunately due to Covid, we had to put many ideas and plans on a postponed list.

As hard as the year has been, we have still been able to provide the students with a few events to participate in and many behind the scenes assistance within the school, some of which included:

• Writing school newsletter articles • Bibles for new students

• Welcome Night & school disco

• Making & cooking pancakes for Shrove Tuesday • Covering readers for R-2

• Mother’s Day stall • Father’s Day stall

• Regular meetings still being active

• Providing fruit platters on Walk To School Day • Cake stall for Fr Cletus

• Welcoming new families on transition days

We are lucky to have a wonderful, motivated & committed group of parents in the P&F and can’t wait to be able to put many of our 2020 ideas into action in 2021!

Thank you to all who have put in their time & effort this year. It’s great we can work together with the staff & the students to all be part of this wonderful school community.

Internal workplace inspections were carried out by staff in Semester 1 and again during Semester 2. Each inspection form was reviewed and any outcomes reported were actioned. Training: New staff were inducted and made aware of school policies and procedures. The Staff Training Register was monitored and kept up to date. Training carried out in 2020 included

Electrical testing including testing and tagging, emergency lighting and the 90 minute exit sign battery discharge test was completed as required in July 2020.

Evacuation plans were updated and displayed in February 2020.

Risk assessments were conducted for all school activities during the year. Emergency Drills for fire and lock ins were carried out.

Contractor file was kept up to date to include dates of contractor induction, current police checks, current licence and public liability insurance details.

Task Manager System was reviewed regularly. All actions and dates of completion were recorded electronically.

Church WHS A workplace inspection was completed in Semester 1 and 2. The inspection forms were reviewed, and any outcomes were reported and actioned.

Work Health and Safety Consultant, Lisa Nowak from CSH&WSA did not visit this year due to Covid 19 restrictions. Due to staff departures within the CSH&WSA there was a reshuffle midyear, with Lucas Parfitt taking over the role from Lisa Nowak. St Joseph’s Renmark continues to be a safe ground and community for staff and students.

School Captains Report:

Being school captains has been an honour at this amazing school. This year has been an exciting, fun and challenging experience due to COVID-19, but with this challenge it has taught us many new things that will help us in the future. We have both enjoyed the responsibility of leading the school in assemblies and when we had guest speakers. We would like to say thank you to everyone for supporting us through this role. We will never forget our time at this school as school captains.
