It’s Almost Here!
It happens every year around this time. Preparations are made. The excitement mounts. Then, on a special day, a community comes together and focuses on what really matters. Great friends. Great food. A great cause. We’re talking, of course, about watching the Super Bowl.
Red Rooster Revelry 2018:
March 3, Herzog Hall
Just kidding. Join your Live Oak brethren at our annual benefit and auction extravaganza. You’ll find that unlike the Super Bowl, Red Rooster Revelry is commercial-free, it never disappoints and, when it’s over, everyone leaves a winner.
Get Your Tickets:
$55 per person in advance ($65 at the door)By now you’ve received your invitation in the mail. Pretty snazzy, huh? You can complete the RSVP card, include payment, and mail it in or drop it off at the school office.
Or make us happy right now and buy tickets online:

Special Donation Request: Decadence
Our procurement team asked that we put out a call for donations that pamper and promote physical well-being: Massages, skin care, acupuncture, etc. Turns out these treats are always hot auction items. And, more important, you deserve it! But, of course, there are many other ways you can donate!

If you haven’t gotten around to it yet…..
We REALLY want to hear form YOU!
Staff and the Board rely on your survey responses to inform planning for the school. The survey takes only 11 minutes to complete, so why not curl up with a cup of tea, coffee, kombucha, or your favorite beverage and let us know what you think?
Our goal is one survey response per child at Live Oak. We are currently about half way there….
Are you getting tired of repeated survey reminders? The best way to make them stop is to ….

…continued from page 1A Word About Class Baskets
Actually, five words: They’re not mandatory any more. We learned many parents were
paying for basket items that would then sell at the auction for less than the original cash outlay. Sad!
So please sign up for a “tasket” instead of making a class basket—we need three volunteer parents from each class: tinyurl.com/2018classtaskets.
Please also consider making a cash donation: tinyurl.com/redrooster2018donate.
Finally: We know we just tried talking you out of it but … if you really love making the baskets and want to keep the tradition alive, go for it. Just let us know ASAP!
Questions? Ideas? Want to Pitch In? Bring It!
The Auction Team meets every Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. in the Middle School Choir Room. All are welcome— especially you!

Middle School Challenge Day
Live Oak will be hosting the award-winning Challenge Day Program for our middle school community on February 21, 2018.
Challenge Days are powerful, high-energy programs in which students and adult participants are guided through a series of experiential learning processes. The overall goals of the program are to increase personal power and self-esteem, to shift dangerous peer pressure to positive peer support and to eliminate the
acceptability of teasing, violence and all forms of oppression. Challenge Day programs are designed to unite the members of the school and/or community and to empower them to carry the themes of the program back to the greater school population. Challenge Days successfully address the issues of violence, teasing, social oppression, racism, harassment, conflict management, suicide, peer pressure, alcohol and drugs.
Challenge days require a great deal of adult support. We are seeking volunteers who can join the program and commit to the full day schedule from 8:00a to 3:45p on February 21st. Training is provided at the start of the day

Writing up a STORM!
The third grade has been having a lot of fun writing this year. With the implementation of our new writing program by Lucy Calkins, the students, have had the opportunity to stretch and grow in the areas of Structure, Development, and Language conventions. Students are learning new vocabulary around writing, new skills to bring to their projects, and have taken on the roles of self and peer editors with great enthusiasm!
This year, the third graders have completed two narratives, one a fairy tale adaptation, and are currently working on an informational writing piece. The informational writing at this point is not a research project, but more of a topic they are already experts on such as being a big brother, caring for cats, playing basketball, or riding a motorcycle. The most important aspect of writing informational pieces is learning how to organize. Please enjoy some of the examples of student work, some pieces are complete while others are in the drafting phase.
Mr. Bob and the fairy God bee
by Jonah R. Once upon a time there was a bee named Bob. Bob had to make honey all day long. All Bob wants is topollinate flowers. The queen said he could not pollinate flowers because he does not have pollen pockets. Bow one day, Bob was making honey in the bee hive and a fairy god been appeared out of
nowhere. “I will give you pollen pockets, but I’m afraid it will wear off in the afternoon. “OK,” said Bob. So she gave him the pockets and off he went to
pollinate. BZZZZZZZZZZZ! He went to a sun flower, but a sister was already there, so he went to a rose, but another bee was there too. Then he came to a violet, there was no bee in sight, so Bob helped himself to pollinate. It was the nicest thing he had ever done. Then he saw the queen bee flying right at him. ZOOM!! Bob went shooting away as fast as he could. He got back to the hive, but wait, he lost a pollen pocket when he flew away from the queen. He looked and looked but he could not find it. Bob went back to making honey and overheard a girl bee say to another bee “look at this pocket I found.” That night, the girl been woke up all the boys and tried the pocket on all of them but none of them could get it on. When it was Bob’s turn, it fit perfectly. Suddenly they saw the hive overflowing. “Let’s get out of here Bob!” “We can make a hive and girls and make honey and boys can pollinate flowers.” The queen and her daughters drowned in the old hive and Bob and the girl lived happily ever after. The end.
Catarina
by FrancesOnce upon a time there was a kitten named Caterina. She was a house cat for her wicked stepfamily and she was in love with Prince Fuzzypants. Her stepfamily never let her go anywhere near the prince, let alone the cat tower. One day, Catarina was cleaning the litter box when there was a meow at the door. She opened the door and there was the Prince! He had invitations for her family and for her to go a party he was hosting to find a mate. Her
stepmother leaped off the stairs and hissed “Who is it?” Caterina said, “It’s the Prince with

Caterina
…continued from page 3go to the party, her stepmother and stepsisters (Mittens and Whiskers) locked her in the house and went out the door with their fluffy tails up. Meanwhile, Prince Fuzzypants was not finding someone to purr with, let alone someone to nap with. Back at the house Caterina tried to get out of the house. She tried scratching at the windows and the doors, and even the cat flap, but it was no use. Her stepmother had locked everything (and I mean everything!). Suddenly Caterina saw sparks! She thought the house was on fire. Then she remembered that no one left the oven on, so it must be magic! Bing! Bang! Boom! A puppy appeared! A Magic Puppy! I can grant your wish to go to the party! “Please do! I really want to go, so hurry up” said Caterina. “Okay! You don’t have to be so rude about it” said Magic Puppy. “Sorry,” said Caterina. “Here we go!” said Magic Puppy! Then Magic Puppy turned around two time and chased his tail and yelled: “Bing! Bang! Boom! And Caterina’s rags turned into an cute party dress and on her paws there were blue slippers. “Thank you so much!” said Catarina with joy. “Any time!” said Magic Puppy and off she went to the party! On the way she ran into some other cats and they were her stepfamily. Oh no! said Catarina quietly and she ran past without a meow. When she got to the party she saw the Prince! He came over and asked her to nap on the highest cat tower. Catarina agreed and they purred and napped until she saw her stepfamily below! She ran away and in her hurry to get out she lost her shoe! When she got home she yelled for Magic Puppy. “Magic Puppy, come now!” said
Caterina. “Okay, okay!” said Magic Puppy, “You don’t need to yell!” Then Magic Puppy turned her party dress into rags and disappeared just like that. An few days later, the prince meowed at the door with Catarina’s shoe! “I am looking for the owner!” he said. Caterina meowed “that’s my shoe!” and leaped to the door. The Prince fit her with the shoe! “You are the kitten from the party!” “Yes, I am!” said Caterina. Then he took her to his cat tower and they lived comfortably for the rest of their lives! Oh, and for Whiskers, Mittens, and their Mamma, well they had to clean their litter box for themselves! THE END!

February is right around the corner and that means it's time for the Fun Committee's annual
LOCS Family Skate Night at Cal Skate.
Get ready to lace up your skates (or blades) Fri, Feb 9th from 5:30 to 7:30 and skate the night away to family-friendly tunes.

• $2 to rent old-school quad skates (nothin' wrong with stability, folks!) • $4 to rent inline skates
Feel free to bring skates from home to forgo skate rental prices. Not so stable on the rink? No problem. Cal Skate rents Skate Mates (like walkers – but for skaters) for $5 each.
But wait! There’s more!!Rohnert Park’s Chipotle (6325 Commerce Blvd) is hosting a Dine N Donate opportunity for Live Oak
students, friends and family members on the same night from 4-8pm.
Click Here to print out the flier (or save it on your phone). Mention you’re there for LOCS, show them the flyer, and Chipotle will donate a very generous 50% of the proceeds to the school. That’s something worth taco-ing about. ;-)
Interested in joining the Fun Committee or sharing your ideas with us? Hang out with us in the library after drop-off on Friday morning, 2/9 (yep, you can start and end your day with us…), and give us your ideas. We’re always looking for new ways to provide break-even (as opposed to FUNdraising) events that the whole family can enjoy. Plus, you might be treated to one of our members’ many awesome
impersonations or impromptu stand-up comedy routines…
Handwork Corner
Sometimes we finish our Handwork curriculum in such a timely manner we are able to add on
ceramics. 8th graders learned how to make pinch pots, coil pots, mugs and masks.
Attendance
Update
Jan 8- Jan 26:
93.3%
It will probably come as no surprise that Live Oak had a rough time with attendance in January, feeling the brunt of a severe cold and flu season here in Sonoma County. We hope that you and your family have been able to stay healthy - and that the worst of seasonal illnesses has passed! We are extremely grateful for all that you do to
support your child’s attendance at school every day.
Please help us get back on track for our goal of a 98% attendance rate.
Please remember that last year LOCS lost over $100k in funding due to absences.
• If your child must miss part of the day, have him or her attend as much as possible.
Your child will be counted.
• Families are encouraged to plan vacations during school breaks. If your child has a
planned absence, please contact the office at least 3 business days in advance to arrange an
independent study. Your child will be counted.
Late Arrivals
Tardies have increased by quite a lot in January.
In the Waldorf classroom, there is a rhythm to the day, with opening activities which prepare the
child to work effectively. When children arrive late, they miss out on an important warm up period which is disruptive to the lesson and the other students. This can also put undo worry and anxiety on the child who is late for class.
Students line up outside their classrooms at 8:10 to greet their teacher. Classroom doors close at 8:15 If you child is tardy, a tardy slip is needed to enter the classroom.
For K-5 students please fill one out in the school office. For Middle School students there is a tardy slip station inside the north entrance door.

Foundation News
by Jerusha Ogden, Grade 3 and Rosemary K parent and Annual Fund Administrator, administrator@live oakfoundation.org
Some parents ask me: What is a "charitable" (tax-deductible) contribution? "A charitable contribution is a donation or gift to a qualified organization.... made without getting, or expecting to get, anything of equal value." (IRS) This includes your Annual Fund donations to Live Oak! Donations at the Red Rooster Revelry Auction that aren't purchases are also charitable--for example, your Auction tips and Fund-A-Need donations are charitable donations. Through our donations (and Auction purchases too) we parents help fund Live Oak programs not covered by State funding: classroom support, instruments, music, movement, quality materials, field trips--so many special aspects of the Live Oak curriculum. Thank you for your support! Please pitch in what you can today if you haven't donated yet this school year
