helps retarded children

Charlotte Editors, The News:

Sunday, March 18, was designated as Mental Retardation Sunday, by over 80 Baptist chuches in North Carolina. I had the privilege of visiting Chantilly Baptist Church to see and hear the program pre- sented by their Special Education Sun- day School class, of which my daughter is a member.

The joy that beamed from the faces of these students as they sang, recited, and

prayed was so beautiful and touching. They give so much; yet ask for so little - only acceptance.

I thank God for the pastor, teachers, and the church as a whole, for a job well done. Although I'm a member of another church, from the dedication I saw, I would ~ighly recommend Chantilly Bap- tist to any parent, whose child might need that extra help. Thanks again, Chantilly.

Fire Guts Former Church

East Charlotte Landmark Already Slated To Be Razed

By ROB URBAN

Staff Writer

Fire investigators Friday were trying to find the cause of a blaze that heavily damaged an abandoned church at East Inde- pendence Boulevard and Briar Creek Road in Charlotte.

Apparently, no one was inside the building. The fire gutted the interior of one of the church's two buildings, with smoke bil- lowing out of the steeple.

The fire started about 7:30 p.m. Thursday and was under control by about l O p.m. When firefighters and police arrived, they blocked off streets in all directions - Indepen- dence from Eastway to Morn- ingside and Briar Creek from

Monroe Road to Common- wealth A venue - causing huge backups as tractor-trailers from Independence were routed through residential areas.

Chuck Hearn, leaving Nakato Japanese Steak House with his family, ran into a del~ of more than an hour. He drove over a fire hose blocking the restau- rant's driveway and drove up to Commonwealth. There, he was stopped by a firefighter who refused to let him move the car. So the Hearns were forced to sit in their car - which strad- dled the hose - and wait until firefighters finished. Driving over a fire hose is against the law.

The' church - formerly

Chantilly Baptist and then Cal- vary Christian Church of the Apostolic Faith - had recently been purchased by the N.C. Department of Transportation and was scheduled to be demol- ished for the Independence wid- ening project.

Neighbor said the building was left unlocked frequently and they'd seen people coming and going who apparently slept inside.

"I've called the police over here twice in the last month," said Ron Russell, who lives on Shenandoah Avenue behind the church. "The doors are open all the time. This is too nice a neighborhood to let the druggies come in and take over the aban- doned buildings."
