Freedom of Information Request Reference No:

I note you seek access to the following information:

i am a Middlesex University student currently studying an MA in Youth Justice, Community Safety and Applied Criminology. I am in the process of completing my dissertation on the effects of betting shops. A Crime Flutter: Do betting Shops generate crime? I want to focus on the Boroughs of Haringey and Hackney as a case study. I would like to request information that would assist me with my chosen subject, this includes:

1. The number of betting shops located in the borough of Haringey and Hackney 2. The number of crime being reported in betting shops

3. The number of incidents which have been reported of underage gambling 4. The strategy plan to prevent crime being committed in betting shops However recent data between 2010 to 2013 would be much obliged.

DECISION

I have today decided to disclose records relating to Questions 2 & 3 in full, which are attached.

Question 1

The MPS do not hold this information as betting shops are licensed by the local council.

Question 4

Local councils have their own officers in place who are basically crime prevention experts. They have their own methods of designing out crime and major issues in a venue and are dealt with, where applicable, under the Licensing Act 2003.

Local policing teams are responsible for dealing with low level crime such as thefts and will liaise with the venues to help them lower crime within the venue.

(2)

There is no specific strategy plan to prevent crime in betting shops held by the MPS Licensing units.
