1 PURPOSE OF TESTS

The purpose of the tests is to check the full functionality of the protection relay.

This procedure does not intend to check that all alarms and trips are correctly sent to the DCS or SCADA level. This part is already developed into dedicated DCS or SCADA Commissioning procedures.

This procedure does not intend to check all tripping matrix and PSL logic tests, this, when applicable, are described into a separate document, dedicated to the specific substation and feeder type.

7 TEST PROCEDURES

The following procedures are written for demonstrating the main protection functions of the MX3EG1 relay using an Omicron test set or similar. The tests do not test the boundaries of all available function characteristics. They do test that the function is operating at a point on one chosen characteristic. This document is to be referred to when performing commissioning tests in association with the commissioning section of the service manual.

NOTE :

All the Test are performed in the Test Switch.

Omicron CMC156 Test Equipment or Any Equivalent To Be Used. 7.1 Auto Synch Check

Use QUICK CMC for these checks.

Simulate Circuit breaker open condition (this is very important)

7.2.1 Differential voltage check:

Apply Vg and Vb as above with 0 angle between them.

Gradually increase/decrease magnitude of one voltage (to create voltage difference). Note down value of voltage difference at which relay operates.

7.2.2 Differential frequency check:

This feature can be checked by STATE SEQUENCER module.

Uncheck the box for “Link frequencies of all generators” to set different frequencies for two voltages. Apply Vg and Vb as above with 0 angle between them.

Gradually increase/decrease frequency of one voltage (to create freq. difference). Note down value of freq difference at which relay operates,

7.2.3 Interaction check

Apply Vg and Vb as above with 0 angle between them ( Healthy condition) . Then check the following cases

Voltage Under threshold , relay should give Voltage Increase order. Voltage Over threshold , relay should give Voltage Decrease order Frequency Under threshold, relay should give Frequency Increase order Frequency Over threshold , relay should give Frequency Decrease order. Check if all orders are given accordingly. And record the result.

7.2 Testing of Binary Inputs:

Apply nominal Voltage on respective Relay terminal and Check the Healthiness of the BI is used in the scheme this BI will be tested along with scheme..

Caution : please make sure of Nominal voltage and Polarity of Terminal before apply the voltage to relay.

7.3 Testing of Binary Output’s :

This test checks that all the output relays are functioning correctly.

the device offers, in the TEST mode, the possibility of testing output relays. The relay test allows the output relays from X1 to X5 to be sequentially selected and checked for correct operation.

Choose TEST mode, then select the relevant output to be activated.

TEST MENU

By pressing the two keys for at least two seconds anywhere in the main reading menu, the TEST function, which is highlighted by the blinking of the green LED (RUN), is

enabled.

[ YES>] ð TEST of relay X2 [TEST RELAY X3]

[ YES>] ð TEST of relay X3 [TEST RELAY X4]

[ YES>] ð TEST of relay X4 [TEST RELAY X5]

[ YES>] ð TEST of relay X5

The test foreseen for X.. auxiliary relay caused the tripping of the same. The associated command and/or signaling can therefore be sent. This is why, before running it, the system prompts you to further confirm:

[ CONFIRM? ] [< NO YES>]

(6)

if, upon confirming the execution, LB or DB synchronization cycles are already present, the test is not performed and this condition is signalled by the following example:

[TEST ]

[NOT AVAILABLE ]

The test on leds and display makes these light up for two seconds and can be carried out during any operating condition.

By pressing the two keys for two seconds

anywhere in the test menu, the TEST function is disabled; the green LED (RUN) stops blinking and the system goes back to the main reading menu.

The tested relay remains energized for 150 and 200 ms. If commands are already present, the test cannot be carried out and a message appears on the display unit. The test on auxiliary relays does not affect counters, event logs and LEDs.

Note : If the Outputs are assigned for function this will be tested along with Functional test of relays.
